Many GRS components eyeing Moyog seat
Published on: Friday, June 27, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 27, 2025 By: Clarence Dol Text Size: Darell and Donald. PENAMPANG: The Moyog state seat now held by Warisan's Datuk Darell Leiking is becoming the subject of a political tussle among Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) components aligned to the ruling coalition, with at least three parties hoping to contest. Vice Head of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Penampang Youth Division, Eldridge Laurence Timis, said the distribution of seats between components must be determined by the higher leadership and not by individuals. 'The Moyog State Legislative Assembly seat has traditionally belonged to Pakatan Harapan (PH) and this is a fact that cannot be denied by any party,' he said. It is understood that GRS is also keen on the seat. Eldridge, who is also Vice-Chief 1 of Angkatan Muda Keadilan Sabah, said that, as enshrined in the spirit and principles of PH, the distribution of seats between coalition components is the absolute right of the PH Presidential Council to be determined finally. Hence, he said, Upko Deputy President Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin's intention to contest in Moyog precedes the official negotiation process within PH. He said all parties in Pakatan Harapan are obliged to respect the seat negotiation process as outlined in the official policy of this coalition. 'Any statement or announcement regarding seat distribution must only be made based on the decision of the PH Presidential Council, not unilaterally by any individual or party. 'Actions beyond this official process can cause confusion among the people and threaten the harmony and strength of the coalition,' he said in a statement, Tuesday. As an ally in PH, he added, PKR had always adhered to this principle and will continue to support any PH candidate who is agreed to contest in the Moyog seat to ensure the victory of this coalition. 'We hope Upko will also continue to respect the spirit of this consensus by giving space to the PH official negotiation process, in line with existing coalition policies and guidelines. 'PKR will not hesitate to defend the rights and position of the PH seat in Moyog based on the official PH consensus that was collectively decided. 'We remind partners in the coalition that any statement or announcement regarding the distribution of seats must be channelled through legitimate PH channels, not unilaterally or speculatively,' he said. "The interests of the coalition must be prioritised over the interests of any party or individual. We stand firm in the principle of consensus, for the sake of common victory!' he explained. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS, PH still discussing seat distribution: Masiung
Published on: Friday, June 27, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 27, 2025 Text Size: Masiung (right) receiving a souvenir from Juslie. SANDAKAN: The distribution of seats between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties remains under discussion, with no final decision being reached by party leadership. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Vice President Datuk Masiung Banah said some GRS component parties had yet to submit their candidate lists for consideration. 'However, these matters will be detailed in the coming GRS and PH Presidential Council meeting,' he told reporters after officiating the Gum-Gum Gagasan Rakyat Division's Annual General Conference. Masiung said while he is not directly involved in the GRS meetings, the Gagasan Rakyat President, who is also GRS President, typically provides updates on such matters. 'The seat allocation between GRS and PH has not been finalised, although discussions are ongoing. 'GRS, under the Gagasan Rakyat umbrella, must contest at least 53 seats, while the remaining 20 seats will be contested by PH,' said Masiung. He said all party members at divisional and grassroots levels must respect the Presidential Council's decisions, as it serves as the key entity within GRS. Masiung acknowledged that current public sentiment favours local parties, but pointed out that cooperation with PH should be prioritised given its alignment with the Prime Minister. The Gum-Gum division conference, led by Division Chief Datuk Juslie Ajirol and his deputy Datuk Jaffari Waliam, attracted over 1,500 delegates and observers. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Will there be more single Malaysians after July 1 as SST causes nuptials to be delayed, cancelled?
IT MAY be a tad dramatic – taxes will force you stay single. Highlighting the impact of the 8% tax levied in practical terms, finfluencer Mashitah Sidek (@ringgitzz) explained (rather dramatically) how much more costly it will be for couples to tie the knot after July 1. This comes about as Malaysia will implement a significant expansion of its Sales and Services Tax (SST) to include new services such as rental or leasing, construction, finance, private healthcare education and beauty. Shared by pro-opposition proponent Siditious (@solidistor) on X, the post is obviously aimed at creating even more discontent at the Madani government for expanding its SST scope. The lawyer observed that more people would choose to stay single with the hike in matrimonial costs following the 8% SST imposition. Makin ramai la single lepas ni. Nak kahwin pun kena SST 8%. — Siditious (@Solisidtor) June 23, 2025 There's no denying that the impending SST which comes into effect next month will erode Malaysians' spending power regardless of their wealth level (imagine traders upping their prices in tandem with rising raw produces). The post by Mashitah has generated a lot of interest as evident from it having garnered 552.6K views at the time of writing alongside 3.8K likes, 2K shares and 108 comments. On the one hand, there are the Madani bashers who are seemingly sick and tired of the 'lies and unfulfilled promises'. Things are very different now from what was said during canvassing for election, it was claimed. One commenter even trotted out what he perceived would be the normal excuses proffered by government apologists. These included: 'Are you getting married every day?' 'If you can afford to spend RM20-30k, what is 8%?' 'You are not the only person paying this tax.' 'Just get hitched in Thailand. Even that has to be taught.' However, more than a few had differing views. For starters, there were those who simply thought that the young lady in the video was just spouting rubbish and by extension the poster who shared the clip. Getting married is easy, claimed one commenter, while blaming the likes of the poster for complicating matters. Yes, the cost-of-living crisis bites. But will a supposed RM800 hike cause a person to cancel a 'one-off or one's a lifetime' wedding? More pertinently, a number of commenters shared very useful advice – live within one's own means. Do not be wasteful with grand celebrations and large dowries during these tough economic times. A more frugal approach was counselled, beginning with a smaller guest list for the kenduri (wedding feast). Another commenter jokingly urged couples to simply beat the July 1 deadline. 'Where's the proof?' demanded one pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) key board warrior who was clearly cynical about claims of declining marriages. At the end of the day, one commenter observed that he has never come across couples not tying the knot because of taxes! – June 26, 2025 Main image credit: BiblioAsia

Penampang PKR slams Donald Mojuntin's claim on Moyog seat
Published on: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 Text Size: PENAMPANG: PKR Penampang has rebuked Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin's recent public statement expressing his intent to contest the Moyog seat, calling it premature and disrespectful to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) seat negotiation process. Penampang PKR Youth Chief Eldridge Laurence Timis claimed that Moyog is traditionally a PH seat calling it 'a fact no one can deny'. 'Any announcement on seat allocations must come from the PH Presidential Council, not from individuals acting unilaterally,' he said in a statement. He stressed that PKR is fully prepared for the upcoming state election and will support any PH-endorsed candidate, but warned against moves that could confuse the public and undermine coalition unity. 'We urge Upko to respect the coalition spirit. No one party or individual should act above the collective process. We stand firm on the principle of consensus, for our shared victory,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
