Andhra Pradesh made strides in curbing ganja menace: Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha

VIJAYAWADA: Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha on Monday said Andhra Pradesh has made major progress in curbing ganja and drug abuse under Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's leadership, transforming agency areas once known for illicit cultivation into hubs of globally recognised coffee. Addressing the media at the Secretariat in Velagapudi on Monday, Anitha credited the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) task force and a coordinated government approach for the turnaround. 'The crackdown began soon after Naidu assumed office. A sub-committee was formed with officials from the Education, Health, Excise, Tribal Welfare, and Home departments to ensure a multi-sectoral approach,' she said. She noted that EAGLE units were established in Amaravati, Rajamahendravaram, and Visakhapatnam, with support cells in all 26 districts. Over the past year, authorities registered 831 cases, arrested 2,114 individuals, and seized 23,770 kg of ganja, 27 litres of hashish oil, and 293 vehicles. Financial probes also led to the seizure of assets worth `7.75 crore from seven major accused. 'Once criticised by neighbouring states as a drug hub, Andhra Pradesh has reversed that image. Areas like Araku and Paderu are now known worldwide for their premium coffee,' she added, highlighting the promotion of Araku Coffee even in the Indian Parliament. EAGLE chief Ake Ravi Krishna presented the force's progress and upcoming initiatives. He said future plans include establishing a dedicated data centre, adopting modern technology to dismantle drug networks, tracking financial trails of offenders, and strictly enforcing the PITNDPS Act.

19 goons jailed, eight deported under KAAPA in six months in Ernakulam district

KOCHI: As the first half of 2025 nears completion, the Ernakulam Rural police have jailed 19 troublemakers and deported eight others from the district after invoking the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 2007, a move the cops said has helped curb serious crimes. Besides them, 20 people have been ordered to report before DySPs or the station house officers concerned on a designated day each week and sign the register as mandated by the KAAPA. 'We used KAAPA strategically and effectively to curb serious crimes. We have observed a significant decline in offences committed by habitual offenders,' said a source with the Ernakulam Rural police. Explaining the process, the official said the police regularly monitor Rowdy History Sheets (RHS) at all stations. 'When a listed offender is involved in a serious crime again, we promptly recommend invoking KAAPA. Depending on the severity of the offence, the person is either imprisoned or deported, following approval from the district collector or the range DIG, respectively,' said the official, adding that to ensure swift action, they maintain updated case files on known repeat offenders. 'Whenever one is found involved in a new crime, we gather all relevant case data immediately and proceed with legal recommendations,' he said. In addition to KAAPA, the Rural police are also using the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PITNDPS Act) to tackle drug-related crimes, said the official. 'As of June 23, 15 individuals have been jailed under the PITNDPS Act in the district. The Ernakulam Rural police have been the most effective in implementing the PITNDPS Act (in the state),' he said. Ernakulam Rural district police chief M Hemalatha said there has been a visible reduction in crimes committed by repeat offenders due to such enforcement measures. 'However, a six-month period is too short for comprehensive assessment. Like all policing efforts, sustained action is essential for lasting impact,' she said.

UP Police seizes drugs worth Rs 5,000 crore in five years

1 2 Lucknow: In a sweeping crackdown under the directive of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state police have launched one of their most aggressive anti-drug offensives in recent years. The campaign, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse (June 26), involved coordinated action across both urban and rural pockets of the state as part of a fortnight-long awareness and enforcement drive from June 12 to 26. According to DGP Rajeev Krishna, the campaign is not merely a law enforcement initiative but also a "battle for the future of our youth and our nation." Visiting the headquarters of the state's Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), the DGP launched a renewed state-wide anti-drug initiative, instructing all police units to couple tough enforcement with robust community outreach. "We are committed to making the ANTF a formidable bulwark against the drug trade in Uttar Pradesh," said DGP Krishna, adding that consistent crackdowns, public engagement, and targeted operations are central to achieving a Nasha Mukt Uttar Pradesh.
