‘TN rooftop solar execution issues to be sorted soon'
Chennai: Glitches in implementing subsidised rooftop solar scheme (PM Surya Ghar Yojana) in Tamil Nadu are teething problems, TNPDCL officials and solar energy developers said here on Friday. The trouble shooting will soon make the scheme more inviting to consumers, they added. At the stakeholders' coordination meeting held in the city, they discussed difficulties at the application stage, problems at effecting services phase, and challenges in getting subsidy to post-installation problems. The meeting was organised by the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group in coordination with TNPDCL. TNPDCL executive engineer Karthikayini, coordinator for the rooftop solar scheme, said, "Vendors should be careful in entering the consumers' data on the portal. Wrong data would delay the release of the subsidy." Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, the Union govt gives 30,000 as a subsidy for every kW of rooftop solar system up to 3kW. Above this, there is a subsidy of 18,000 for every kW up to 10kW. Anna University's Institute of Energy Studies former professor R Sethumadhavan said that several rooftop installations in primary health centres in districts cannot be used because they don't have a three-phase power supply. "Despite spending lakhs, the systems are not put to use. Uncontrolled high voltage, and net feed-in tariff in place of net-metering tariff are some problems that discourage people from installing rooftop solar systems," he said. Union renewable energy ministry's nodal officer Ramesh Babu said 236 crore was disbursed as a subsidy to TN as a part of rooftop solar scheme so far. "Those who applied for rooftop services before Feb 2024, and did not get the services, can reapply soon," he said. R Somesh Saravana, lead district manager from Indian Overseas Bank for Chennai district, said that many banks combine loans for rooftop solar systems along with new and existing housing loans. They do not insist on documents for up to 3kW, he added.

4000 applications filled for Solar rooftops under PM Surya Ghar scheme in Dhamatri, Gov subsidies are motivating factor
Dhamtari (Chhattisgarh) [India], July 8 (ANI): The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is proving to be a game changer across the country. The initiative, which aims to provide free electricity through solar rooftop systems, is changing lives in Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari district, where many families are seeing both economic and environmental benefits. One such example is the Sonkar family residing in Gokulpur Ward under Dhamtari Municipal Corporation. As soon as they heard about the scheme, they contacted the local electricity department and the municipal office to gather complete details. After understanding the procedure, they submitted the required documents and registered for the installation of a rooftop solar system. Within 15 days, a site inspection was conducted, and the solar panel system was involved. S.R. Sonkar, the head of the household, said that the installation of the solar rooftop has completely changed their electricity consumption. Their house has 9 to 10 rooms, each equipped with electrical appliances like fans and coolers, which they continue to use without any problem. Before the installation, their monthly electricity bill used to be around 2,000. But after the installation, the bill has reduced to zero. They are also generating excess power, which has led to a credit of 3,000 with the local electricity department. The total cost of the rooftop system was approximately 1.85 lakh. Of this amount, the Central Government provided a subsidy of 78,000, while the Chhattisgarh State Government gave an additional subsidy of 30,000, making the setup financially accessible for the family. Shekhar Sonkar, son of S.R. Sonkar, operates a stationery shop on the ground floor of their home. The shop, too, runs entirely on solar energy. Despite using electrical appliances such as fans, lights, and a television in the shop, the electricity charges are zero. The Sonkar family expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for launching this impactful scheme that is not only easing their monthly expenses but also promoting clean energy use. The success of the Sonkar family has inspired neighbours in the area. People like Laxmidhar Diwan, a resident of the same ward, have expressed interest in using the scheme and have approached the Sonkar family for guidance. Many are now planning to install similar systems in their homes. Dhamtari District Collector Abhinash Mishra confirmed that the district administration has received over 4,000 applications under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana so far. He said work is progressing rapidly and assured that each applicant will benefit from the subsidies. He highlighted that the total cost of installation is around 1.85 lakh, with 78,000 being subsidised by the Centre and an additional 30,000 provided by the State Government. The scheme continues to gain momentum as more households look to shift to solar energy, saving on electricity bills and contributing to a sustainable future. (ANI)

REC to provide about Rs 2.5 lakh cr finance for renewable energy projects till 2030
New Delhi: State-owned non-banking finance firm REC Ltd will increase its exposure to renewable energy projects by about ₹2.5 lakh crore in next six years to aid India's target of having 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030. REC currently has an exposure of about ₹53,000 crore in renewable energy projects with a total loan book of ₹5.67 lakh crore as on March 31, 2025. The company has planned to achieve a loan book of ₹10 lakh crore including ₹3 lakh crore exposure in renewable energy project by 2030. Renewable energy is a key area where the company will focus in the coming six years in view of nation's ambitious target of having 500 GW renewable energy by 2030. Talking to PTI, REC Chairman and Managing Director Jitendra Srivastava said, "Currently, our loan book stands at around 5.67 lakh crore. and we are trying to aim for a loan book of 10 lakh crore by 2030. Out of this, we would like to see the renewable sector touching around 3 lakh crore, which is currently around ₹52,000 crore to ₹53,000 crore. So we are hopeful. We would like to push the sector." He said the company will be fairly aggressive in the renewable energy sector. India's installed renewable energy capacity is about 220 GW as of March 31, 2025, which includes around 48 GW large hydro power project, over 50 GW wind energy and about 106 GW solar projects. India needs to add 50 GW of renewable energy capacity per annum till 2030 to achieve the target of 500 GW. Thus the nation needs a lot of investment and finance facility to achieving this tall order. The government has appointed REC as the nodal agency for implementing roof-top solar scheme ' PM Surya Ghar Yojana '. About the progress on the scheme, Srivastava said, "We have a target of 1 crore households for PM Surya Ghar Yojana, out of which 51 lakh applications have come in. Out of this, 12 lakh people have already received it and we are trying to complete our target of 1 crore households in next two years." About reducing the net credit impaired assets or bad loans, he stated that the company is targeting zero bad loans this fiscal, which has already been brought down to 0.38 per cent from 0.86 per cent a year ago. He also informed that there are 12 cases of bad loans and the company is working on them.
