Leffard collars Trinity College in Grand Prix de Paris
Jean-Claude Rouget returned to the Group One winner's enclosure as Leffard got up to deny Trinity College in a pulsating finish to the Cygagames Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp. The dual Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning trainer – who has had health battles and seen his string much reduced over the last year – was clearly emotional after Cristian Demuro put Leffard's head down right on the line to edge out Aidan O'Brien's Trinity College. Ryan Moore and Trinity College had tracked Frankly Good Cen before switching out and showing a smart turn of foot, one that looked like it would seal matters. That was not counting for Leffard, however, and he too picked up in great style when asked to leave the pair battling out. After the shortest of waits, Leffard was announced the winner, putting a below-par effort in the Prix du Jockey Club – in which Trinity College had been fourth before winning at Royal Ascot – behind him and fully justifying the decision to supplement for the Paris showpiece. The winner returned at 145-10 on the PMU, with a British and Irish industry price of 16-1. Quelle lutte ! 💥 🏆 𝗟𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗱 (C. Demuro - J.-C. Rouget) résiste à Trinity College et enlève le Cygames Grand Prix de Paris (Gr.1). 👏 Il succède à Sosie au palmarès de cette épreuve — Equidia (@equidia) July 13, 2025 Rouget told Sky Sports Racing: "It was fantastic when I saw the horse coming. I was very confident there was not a big difference between the two (Leffard and Trinity College). "I knew he was very good, but I had to find a new confidence in him. He was so well this week and the field was not tremendous, so I decided to supplement him. When I saw six runners, it was possible to be third and we did better. "I think yes (he is an Arc horse), because when I bought him I was sure I bought a good horse.

Pools' French connection basks in Deauville sunshine
The Group 3 Singapore Pools Prix de Ris-Orangis (1,200m) on July 6 was not just a victory for favourite punters, but, also, as its name may give away, for long-time racing partners France and Singapore. In a thrilling contest up the Deauville straight, the top three elects lived up to experts' opinion to make up the tierce in the €73,200 (S$110,000) contest, with second fancy ($16) Beauvatier (Alexis Pouchin) rolling favourite Tribalist (Mickael Barzalona), who led at a steady clip from the outset. Third choice, and one of two UK raiders in the eight-horse field, Spycatcher (Sam James) stormed home from the rear but had to settle for second, edging a gallant Tribalist by a neck. The other English contender Toyotomi (Maxime Guyon) ran fourth. As the popular result was celebrated with more champagne from the local Normandy terroir, Singapore Pools was also the toast of the Hippodrome de Deauville at the prize presentation area. The Singapore gaming company's French counterpart, Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) and France Galop were hosting a small Pools delegation led by its chairman KaiS.Nargolwala, chief product officer Simon Leong and product planning and development manager Fu Juncong. While Pools has been broadcasting French races since 2008, it is the first time that one was named in its honour, as has been the trend set in places like South Korea, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia and Hong Kong in the last couple of years. "Our horse racing fans were able to enjoy the broadcast of French racing since 2008," said Leong. "The continued partnership with Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) and France Galop marks a meaningful step in deepening international collaboration and enriching the racing experience for our customers. "The inaugural Singapore Pools Trophy at Deauville stands as a testament to the strength of our relationship and our shared ambition to grow the sport globally." PMU international director Aymeric Verlet was equally pleased for the opportunity to expose its Singapore partner to a slice of French racing on their own soil. "We are delighted to see our longstanding partner, having the Prix de Ris-Orangis named under Singapore Pools during this Deauville summer meeting," said Verlet. "This collaboration reflects the strength and longevity of our international relationships, as well as the growing appeal of French racing abroad. It is a great recognition of the quality of our racing offering and an excellent opportunity for racing enthusiasts, both in France and in Singapore." Winning trainer Yann Barberot was pleased with Beauvatier's second Group win since the Group 3 Prix La Rochette (1,400m) in 2023. "Today, he showed his speed, but also a powerful finish. We'll look after him, especially after a tough 3YO campaign," said Barberot. With the Prix de Ris-Orangis slated as Race 2, a greater time was to be had by all later in the hot summer day, more so at the meeting's highlight, the Prix Jean Prat. The Group 1 (1,400m) race saw $70 shot Woodshauna (Christophe Soumillon) salute for in-form trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. manyan@

Official apathy behind stalled Kallakkuttykudy bridge project, says Idukki MP
Despite the swift sanctioning of ₹3.6 crore under the Rebuild Kerala Initiative (RKI) for a crucial bridge and road to Kallakkuttykudy, a tribal hamlet in Mankulam panchayat in Idukki, official indifference and contractor inaction have brought the project to a standstill. Approved on June 7, 2024, with a completion deadline of May 16, 2025, not a single brick has been laid — leaving the tribal community stranded yet again. While authorities resort to mere notices, questions arise over accountability in a project. According to sources, official apathy is behind the stalling of the dream project of the local community. According to local residents, the concrete bridge connecting the Kallakkuttykudy tribal settlement to the outside world was washed away by the devastating flood in August 2018. Afterwards, during rainy seasons, the tribal community would make temporary bamboo bridge so that the children could go to school. Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose blamed the Devikulam block panchayat, saying that he had allotted ₹20 lakh for the bridge and the block panchayat opposed it. Mr. Kuriakose alleged that the failure of the bridge project is tied to the apathy of the State government. '₹20 lakh had been allotted. But the officials blocked the administrative sanction for the project,' said Mr. Kuriakose. Under RKI Meanwhile, Devikulam block panchayat secretary Sunil Sebastian said that Mr. Kuriakose sent a proposal for the project on February 28, 2023. Based on the proposal, the block panchayat conducted an estimate for the project, and the estimated cost was ₹49.9 lakh. 'The project later changed to a footbridge, and administrative sanction was received from the district planning officer on June 19, 2023. After being approached about the final sanction from the district panchayat, it was revealed that the project was included under the RKI project. Based on the direction, the project was cancelled on January 25, 2024,' said Mr. Sebastian. The official further stated that the block panchayat never opposed the project and had completed all paperwork. Meanwhile, Vishnukumar G., project director of the Project Management Unit (PMU) of RKI, Thiruvananthapuram, stated that the government allotted ₹3.6 crore for the construction of a bridge and road in the Kallakkuttykudy tribal settlement. 'With this, ₹1.5 crore has been allotted for the construction work of the 32.46-metre-long and 4.5-metre-wide bridge. The contractor signed an agreement for the project on June 7, 2024, and the site was handed over for construction on June 17, 2024. The completion period was fixed at 11 months.' The official further stated that the contractor failed to commence construction work, and the RKI issued repeated notices to the contractor. 'After completing the agreement period, the RKI is to recover losses from the contractor's responsibility. The project will be re-tendered and rearranged,' said Mr. Vishnukumar.
