The night Jersey rock royalty, including Bruce Springsteen, saluted Brian Wilson at PNC

Brian Wilson, the visionary leader of the Beach Boys, passed away at the age of 82, his family announced Wednesday, June 11. Wilson's career included reaching unmatched creative heights of rock 'n' roll artistry, and decades of prolonged bouts of mental illness, where Wilson's public persona was shrouded in mystery. Wilson, who played bass for the Beach Boys' live shows in the early 1960s, successfully returned to concert stages in his later years. His shows with the Beach Boys and solo were always events at the Jersey Shore. None more so than 10 years ago on July 1, 2015, at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Wilson and his backing band, which included Beach Boys Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin, played band classics and two new Wilson songs, "No Pier Pressure" and "Runaway Dancer," that summer night. Matt Jardine, Al's son, enchanted with his rendition of "Don't Worry Baby," a song closely associated with Wilson's late brother, Carl Wilson. Wilson introduced "God Only Knows" by saying, "People say it's the best song I ever wrote." He then sang, from behind his keyboards, in a halting, clipped style, which compellingly contrasted against the beautifully lush arrangement of the song. Then the Boss came: Bruce Springsteen sang harmony for "Barbara Ann," and played guitar on "Surfin' U.S.A." He was met by a chorus of "Bruuuuces" by the surprised crowd, which included Pat DiNizio, Jim Babjak and Dennis Diken of the Smithereens. After Springsteen left, Wilson at his white piano performed "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "Love & Mercy" to close the show. "The songs he created with the Beach Boys still give me tears of joy," said Babjak Wednesday afternoon on social media. He greeted Wilson backstage that night. "I'm so glad he created music in my lifetime," Babjak said. Subscribe to for the latest on the New Jersey music scene. Jersey music star Halsey has special 'Hometown' moment at PNC Bank Arts Center

Halsey delivered a hometown special June 6 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. The Jersey native played 'Hometown' for only the second time on her For My Last Trick Tour at the venue and fans loved it. '(Halsey) singing 'Hometown' in Holmdel,' commented a fan on X. 'I'm too emotional for this.' '(Halsey) I'm so glad you came back to your hometown,' commented another on X. The country coaxed midtempo ballad is from Halsey's latest album, 'The Great Impersonator.' Halsey was born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane in Edison. The 30-year old grew up in the Washington borough of Warren County. Her hits include 'Bad at Love,' 'Eastside,' 'Without Me' and 'Closer.' 'Tonight we've got a special one in Jersey, I can't believe that I am home,' sang Halsey in a change of lyrics for 'Only Living Girl in LA,' according to a social media video. 'I got to go away and do a little magic, then come back and play a very, very special show.' Halsey had canceled her June 4 performance at the Maine Savings Amphitheater in Bangor, Maine, hours before the show citing vocal issues. Upcoming for Halsey is Saturday, June 7, at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden. Ticket prices begin at $42 via Ticketmaster. The scheduled 32-city For My Last Trick Tour kicked off May 10 at the Toyota Pavilion in Concord, California, and wraps up Sunday, July 6, at the Yaamava Theater in Highland, California. Halsey announced the tour with a fatally fun video where she's apparently prepping for her funeral. Her last tour was five years ago as she's has battled multiple illnesses in recent years. She's spoken publicly about battles with endometriosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, Sjogren's syndrome and mast cell activation syndrome. In a social media post, Halsey suggested that she's being treated for lupus and leukemia when she linked to the Lupus Research Alliance, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Halsey's last Jersey shows were in 2023 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, part of that year's North to Shore festival. Below is the setlist for the Holmdel show: Darwinism Bad at Love Alone Lucky Dog Years I am Not a Woman, I'm a God Control Lilith Angel on Fire Ashley Panic Attack Graveyard Only Living Girl in LA Lonely is the Muse Gasoline Colors You Should Be Sad The Lighthouse Closer Nightmare Ghost Hometown Without Me The Great Impersonator Subscribe to for the latest on the New Jersey music scene. Overcast skies, rainy weekends and days where temps dip below 60 degrees have dominated weather forecasters' broadcasts the past few months. Still, we're holding out hope that things warm up the next couple weeks just in time for outdoor concert season. And that's especially true this year since Holmdel, NJ's PNC Bank Arts Center has such an impressive slate of performers scheduled this spring, summer and early fall. Counting Crows (June 28), Thomas Rhett (July 10), Styx (July 20), Big Time Rush (July 22) and Nelly (July 26) are just a few of the other biggies scheduled to swoop into the Garden State these next few months.
