Man, 70, hurt after gun attack in Bukidnon
A 70-year-old man was injured after unidentified gunmen riddled his home with bullets in Barangay Kinawe, Libona, Bukidnon. Series of gunshots stirred residents past midnight on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. Authorities said the house of the victim was strafed while he and his wife were sleeping inside. Neighbors claimed to have heard at least 30 gunshots. 'Ayha mi niduol sa area mga 10 minutes pa nilabay kay dili ta kumpyansa gud basin naa pay resbak nga naghupo ra ba kaha to diha,' a resident, alias 'Kiko,' said. No one reportedly saw the gunmen as it was dark at that time. Police recovered 28 empty shells from an M16 rifle and eight empty shells from a caliber 9mm pistol from the area. The gunfire was concentrated on the side of the house where the victim was sleeping. The walls were riddled with bullet holes and a chicken was killed. The victim sustained three gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment at the hospital. Fortunately, his wife was unharmed. Authorities are eyeing land dispute as motive behind the attack. It was learned that this was not the first time the victim had been attacked. Prior to the incident, the suspects attempted to burn down his house, but neighbors were able to put it out. Investigation into the incident continues.

8 nabbed, P20M alleged smuggled cigarettes seized in MisOr
Eight people were arrested and alleged smuggled cigarettes worth around P20 million were seized in Manticao, Misamis Oriental. Personnel of the Manticao Municipal Police Station launched the operation after receiving information about alleged contraband items getting unloaded from a fishing vessel, known locally as 'kompit,' in Barangay Punta Silum. Authorities allegedly caught the suspects in the act of unloading boxes of cigarettes along the seawall. During the search, authorities discovered more contraband items inside a truck van parked near the area. Police seized around 500 cases of cigarettes, the fishing vessel, and the truck. The suspects arrested are residents of Manticao, Zamboanga City, and Iligan City. They may face charges for alleged violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (RA 10863), Graphic Health Warning Law (RA 10643), and Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act (R.A. 12022). Based on investigation, the alleged smuggled cigarettes reportedly came from Basilan and were transported to Manticao. 'This successful operation is a clear demonstration of our continued efforts to secure our borders and uphold the law. I commend the operating units for a job well done. Let us remain steadfast in our mission to protect the public from the dangers of illicit trade,' Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) Director, Brigadier General Rolindo Suguilon, said.

PNP to deploy 37,000 cops for School Year 2025-2026 opening
Some 37,000 police officers will be deployed by the Philippine National Police for the opening of School Year 2025-2026 this month, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said Saturday. "Nakahanda na tayo... Nasa 37,000 police officers ang ide-deploy natin," Fajardo said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB. (We are ready. We will deploy around 37,000 police officers.) "Five thousand ang ilalagay natin sa mga police assistance desk sa mga paaralan," she added. (Five thousand [police officers] will be assigned to police assistance desks in schools.) "Mayroon ding police mobile at foot patrollers malapit sa mga paaralan," Fajardo said. (There will also be police mobile and foot patrollers near schools.) In Northern Mindanao, the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) has heightened security across the region ahead of the opening of classes. PRO-10 director Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman ordered all provincial and city police offices to deploy maximum personnel in strategic areas, including schools, transport terminals, airports, seaports, malls, business centers, and other areas where people converge, according to an earlier report by GMA Regional TV. The Department of Education earlier announced that public schools across the country would open classes for School Year 2025–2026 on June 16, 2025 This shift marks a return to the pre-pandemic school calendar, as outlined in DepEd Order No. 12, Series of 2025. The school year will run until March 31, 2026, covering 197 class days, including the End-of-School-Year (EOSY) rites. —KG, GMA Integrated News
