Addeen Idrakie wins Morrinsville Open after injury comeback

NATIONAL squash player Addeen Idrakie's long wait for a Professional Squash Association (PSA) title ended after he clinched the Morrinsville Open in New Zealand today. The Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) in a statement today said the 31-year-old battled past compatriot Joachim Chuah in a five-set thriller at the Morrinsville Squash Club to win the PSA Challenger level event 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4. However, it was a bittersweet victory for Addeen as Joachim suffered an injury in the deciding set with the score tied at 4-4, forcing him to limp through the remaining points. 'It was a hard and good match from Joachim just now. I think the last time I won a title was in 2023 in Australia. Happy to win a title again after five months out from squash,' he said in a statement by SRAM today. The win marked Addeen's seventh PSA Tour title and his first since triumphing at the North Coast Open in Australia last year. Addeen had been sidelined for six months due to a shoulder injury before making his competitive return at the President's Trophy in Seremban last month, where he finished as runner-up to Canada's Karim Aguib. - Bernama

Addeen ends long title wait with bittersweet win in NZ

Sweet 1-2 finish: Addeen Idrakie (right) and Joachim Chuah. PETALING JAYA: National squash player Addeen Idrakie's long wait for another PSA title finally came to an end after he won the Morrinsville Open in New Zealand yesterday. The 31-year-old outlasted compatriot Joachim Chuah in the PSA Challenger level event, winning the match 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4 at the Morrinsville Squash Club. However, the final in New Zealand was a bittersweet win for Addeen as countryman Joachim suffered an injury in the final set with the score tied at 4-4, leaving him limping through the remaining points. But Addeen was relieved to get his seventh PSA Tour title after his last win at the North Coast Open in 2023, and is hoping he can carry that momentum to his next tournament. "I feel very happy to finally win a title again after two years. It was disappointing to see Joachim get a cramp in the final set," he said. Addeen's next outing will see him hop over to Australia to compete at the Victorian Open in Melbourne from July 16-20 as the top seed. He hopes the slight discomfort in his shoulder would alleviate itself before the tournament as he looks to make it a back-to-back win. "I'll be leaving for Australia to compete at the Victorian Open, and I really hope my shoulder gets better soon so I'm fully prepared and ready for the tournament," he said. Addeen's shoulder injury had forced him off the court for six months, but he made his return at the President's Trophy in Seremban last month, where he finished runners-up to Canada's Karim Aguib.

Coach backs Aira to crack squash's top 20

KUALA LUMPUR: Two-time national champion Aira Azman has set her sights on cracking the top 20 in the women's PSA Tour rankings. The 21-year-old has made steady progress this season, climbing from world No. 36 last August to a career-high No. 26 after winning the Bermuda Open in May. She currently sits at No. 27. Aira also claimed the Tuanku Muhriz Trophy in Seremban last September and bagged a bronze medal at the inaugural Under-23 World Championship in Karachi in April. She is now Malaysia's third-highest ranked player behind S. Sivasangari (No. 8) and Rachel Arnold (No. 19). National coach Ajaz Azmat is happy with Aira's progress. "She is still young and hardworking. I believe she can break into the top 20 by next year."

Sivasangari bows out of PSA Tour Finals without a win

KUALA LUMPUR: S. Sivasangari bowed out of the PSA Squash Tour Finals in Toronto without a win, losing all three of her Group B matches. The world No. 8, who lifted the Cincinnati Cup title in February, suffered her third straight defeat on Wednesday, going down 8-11, 11-9, 11-7 to world No. 7 Satomi Watanabe of Japan. It was Sivasangari's first loss to Satomi in seven PSA Tour meetings, and the result saw her finish bottom of the group. She had earlier lost to world No. 4 Olivia Weaver of the United States and world No. 14 Fayrouz Aboelkheir of Egypt. National coach Ajaz Azmat said Sivasangari started well by taking the opening game against Satomi but couldn't maintain her momentum. "Sivasangari gave her best, but she just couldn't find the points to win the match," said Ajaz. "She'll now have two months to rest and regroup before the new season starts in September." Satomi, who became the first Japanese player to reach the Tour Finals semi-finals, praised her opponent's spirit. "All credit to Sivasangari, she showed her fighting spirit right until the end," said Satomi. "It's tough to stay motivated once you know your qualification chances are slim, but she still turned up for the final game. "I knew the second game was crucial. I was down 6-3 and really happy to turn it around." Satomi will face Group A winner and world No. 1 Nouran Gohar of Egypt in the semi-finals, while Weaver takes on world No. 10 Georgina Kennedy of England in the other last-four clash.

Injury forces Paul Coll out of squash finals

Greymouth's Coll suffered an ankle injury during his first group game against England's Mohamed ElShorbagy. Coll won the match 2-0. After the win world number three Coll gave no indication of an injury. Coll's victory saw him end the opening day of the event at the top of Group B, but his withdrawal means his next two opponents Diego Elias of Peru and opponent Karim Abdel Gawad of Egypt will both receive 2-0 wins. That means that Elias becomes the first player to qualify for the semi-finals after moving top of Group B with seven points with Gawad moving second on five points. ElShorbagy sits bottom of the table without a point to his name, but is still in with a chance of qualifying if he can win his remaining games. The PSA World Tour Finals involves the top eight men and women in the world with total prize money of $2 million.
