Sivasangari out of tour finals semi-final contention after second defeat

NATIONAL squash ace S. Sivasangari's hopes of progressing to the semi-finals of the 2024/2025 PSA Squash Tour Finals were dashed after she suffered her second consecutive defeat in Group B on Tuesday. The 26-year-old went down to Egypt's Fayrouz Aboelkheir 11-10, 9-11, 7-11 in a closely fought 41-minute battle at the Revival Film Studio in Toronto. Sivasangari took the first game 11-10 but was unable to maintain her momentum, eventually falling 9-11, 7-11 in the next two games. This follows her opening-day loss to second seed Olivia Weaver of the United States, where the Kedah-born player lost in straight games, 9-11, 9-11. Weaver continued her winning form in Group B, overcoming Japan's Satomi Watanabe 3-11, 11-6, 11-6 in 31 minutes. Group B remains open for the second semi-final spot, with Watanabe and Aboelkheir each recording one win ahead of today's final group match. The PSA Tour Finals features the top eight players in the world, divided into two groups, with only the top two from each group progressing to the semi-finals.

A chance for Rachel to capture Asian crown

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Rachel Arnold has suddenly found herself presented with the opportunity to become Asian squash champion. This is due to the last-minute withdrawals of Japan's world No. 7 Satomi Watanabe of Japan and Rachel's compatriot, S. Sivasangari (world No. 9). In their absences, world No. 19 Rachel has been promoted to the top seeding in the Asian meet from June 17-21 in Kuala Lumpur. Satomi was supposed to be the top seed and Sivasangari, second. Satomi and Sivasangari have opted to play in the PSA Tour Finals in Toronto, Canada from June 23-27. Rachel, 29, who won the China Open last November, will be looking to win her first Asian title after finishing second to Hong Kong's Tong Tsz Wing in 2021 in Islamabad. Barring any upset, Rachel is expected to face compatriot and second seed Aira Azman in the Asian final. Malaysia's Ng Eain Yow, who is top seeded in the men's category, will be eyeing his third consecutive Asian title after winning in Islamabad (2021) and Hong Kong (2023). World No. 11 Eain Yow is expected to face world No. 23 Abdulla Al-Tamimi of Qatar in the final.

Sivasangari gets invite to 'elite party'

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's S. Sivasangari has qualified for her first PSA Squash Tour Finals — in Toronto, Canada from June 23-27. The elite event will feature the world's top eight men's and top eight women's players. The other women's players who will feature in the Tour Finals are world No. 1 Nouran Gohar, world No. 2 Nour El Sherbini, world No. 3 Hania El Hammamy (all from Egypt), world No. 4 Olivia Weaver (United States), world No. 5 Amina Orfi (Egypt), world No. 6 Tinne Gilis (Belgium) and world No. 7 Satomi Watanabe (Japan). Asian champion Sivasangari, who won the Cincinnati Open in February, will arrive in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow from Birmingham to discuss with the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia whether to play in the Asian Championships in Kuching (June 17-21) or PSA Tour Finals (June 23-27). It is impossible for Sivasangari to play in both the Asian meet and the PSA Tour Finals due to a clash of dates.
