Middle East conflict may hit India's polyester, viscose supply chain
The escalating US-Israel-Iran conflict poses a serious threat to the textile value chain in India and worldwide. Iran's Parliament has unanimously approved a proposal to close the Strait of Hormuz—a vital maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Such a move would severely disrupt crude oil shipments, driving oil prices sharply higher and inflating polyester production costs. The closure would also trigger a steep rise in shipping freight rates, further straining the supply of viscose, non-cotton, and cotton yarns and fibres. Indian polyester fibre and raw material manufacturers have already increased prices significantly due to the surge in crude oil prices. US-Israel-Iran conflict and Iran's move to close the Strait of Hormuz threaten global oil trade and India's textile value chain. Crude oil and freight costs are rising, prompting sharp hikes in polyester and viscose fibre prices. Indian PSF prices rose by ₹3.50 per kg, with further increases expected. Supply disruptions and higher raw material costs may strain synthetic yarn producers. Last week, one of India's leading producers raised polyester staple fibre (PSF) prices by ₹3.50 per kg, effective from June 21. Current PSF prices are: 1.4 denier (Den) at ₹103.50 (~$1.19) per kg, 1.2 Den at ₹104.25 per kg, and 1.0 Den at ₹105 per kg (exclusive of 18 per cent GST). The company also raised raw material prices for texturised yarn by ₹3–4 per kg. Market sources indicate that most spinning mills have started quoting higher prices. Others, initially hesitant, are now also increasing rates. It is expected that all mills will raise polyester yarn prices by ₹3–4 per kg. Last week, traders had forecast a further increase of ₹1–1.5 per kg. Polyester fibre and yarn producers in India had already raised prices in response to last week's crude oil surge following the Israeli attack on Iran ten days ago. However, the latest developments—direct US attacks on Iran and Iran's announcement to close the Strait of Hormuz—carry even more serious implications for crude oil and the global textile supply chain. In 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, the Strait of Hormuz accounted for over one quarter of global seaborne oil trade. Due to its geographical importance, there is no viable alternative sea route, posing significant threats to global oil and LNG supply chains and causing prices to soar. R K Vij, emeritus president of the Textile Association of India (TAI) and secretary general of the Polyester Textile and Apparel Industry Association (PTAIA), told Fibre2Fashion , 'Due to last week's increase in crude oil, the industry has hiked prices of PTA and MEG. Downstream industry has also increased ₹3.50 per kg in PSF and ₹4 per kg in yarn and filaments.' 'Looking at the season ahead, the price rise has been absorbed, and user industry has lifted the prices of their products. If Israel-Iran conflict continues, oil prices can further increase, thus making the fibre yarn filament further costly,' he added. Dr Jay Krishna Pathak, president of The Bombay Yarn Merchants Association and Exchange Ltd told F2F , 'We might see crude oil prices skyrocket, which may lead to a further increase in synthetic raw material costs. Prices have already witnessed a steep rise in the past week. It will be difficult to absorb the price hike under the current market conditions. Polyester yarn demand will improve when fabric lifting picks up and payment conditions improve.' The Middle East conflict and possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz could also lead to a steep rise in shipping freight charges, further fuelling viscose yarn prices. India's industry is heavily reliant on imported viscose yarn, mainly from China. A Mumbai-based trader noted that demand has risen ahead of the festive season. If freight rates increase, imported viscose yarn prices are expected to climb further in the coming weeks. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (KUL)

PSF alters national junior c'ship dates
National swimmers and their parents take a sigh of relief as the Pakistan Swimming Federation (PSF) announced that the Junior National Open and Age Group Swimming Championship will take place in October, at its annual schedule, instead of August 7. The national championship for juniors and age groups regularly takes place in October; however, this year, the schedule change took the swimmers and their parents by surprise when the PSF declared that the championship would take place months earlier than expected. It was initially announced to take place on July 10. However, after objection from the parents of the young athletes from the Sindh swimming teams (boys and girls) and the Pakistan Navy swimming team through a letter signed by more than 40 parents on June 3,to PSF CEO and Chairman Major (R) Majid Waseem, the dates were reconsidered and given out for August. Later, though, the parents and the Navy team again expressed concerns on June 11 through another letter that the swimmers would not be able to train for the championship in time despite the change of dates to August. It was emphasised that the students would either be preparing or taking exams or will be abroad on vacation. The parents were demanding a more inclusive approach as they wanted their children to be in the best shape at the championships and trials to select the swimmers for international participation. "Many swimmers are currently in the middle of their academic examinations/CAIEs since April 2025 which extend well into June, hence they have not been training due to their hectic academic commitments," the letter to PSF CEO said. "Several children are also abroad for vacations or are enrolled in scheduled international training programs that were planned months in advance. "While we fully understand the need to conduct early trials and meet deadlines for selecting swimmers aiming to participate in upcoming international competitions, holding the entire and much-anticipated National Age Group Swimming Championships this early would be disadvantagous for the age group swimmers. The protests finally bore fruit and the latest PSF decision to shift the dates to October have resolved the issue amicably. "I am happy with the way the Pakistan Swimming Federation (PSF) has addressed this issue. The decision to hold the National Championships in October is a positive step for the sport, as it will give athletes ample time to prepare and compete at their peak performance levels," the father of three national junior swimmers Rehan Malik told The Express Tribune. His 16-year-old daughter, who got done with her exams in June, and 14-year-old son, who has been representing Sindh like his older sister, and the youngest daughter, 12-year-old are all set to participate in the championship like many other junior swimmers. Meanwhile, the PSF sent out the notification of the change to the parents was," to inform all swimmers/parents and the coaches that the Junior National Open and Age Group Swimming Championship, which was to be held from 7-11th August, has been postponed to October due to some reasons. The championship will now be held tentatively during the first/second week of October 2025 in Islamabad or Lahore (subject to availability of the swimming pool). The final dates will be conveyed to everyone soon. All participants should continue their training. The coaches should prepare their teams and work hard for the Championship trophy." The Express Tribune reached out to the PSF for an explanation for the reasons, they replied on June 18, stating the reason for postponement to be the parents' request. Following the change in dates, Malik and others have sent another letter to PSF on June 17 to show their gratitude on the decision. "We, the parents of the Sindh swimming teams and the Pakistan Navy swimming team, would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your positive response and for considering our request to reschedule the National Swimming Championships to October 2025.

Nearly $100K award fuels salmon stewardship projects in Haida Gwaii
The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) has awarded $97,500 to Indigenous, community-led efforts to protect and restore salmon in Haida Gwaii. The non-profit environmental foundation distributed its record-breaking $1.8 million Community Salmon Program this year, supporting grassroots restoration, stewardship, and education projects across B.C. and the Yukon. On June 10, PSF granted $50,000 to the Haida Fisheries Program on Moresby Island and $47,500 to the Tlell Watershed Society. 'The state of salmon calls on our collective support. We're seeing record demand and increasingly ambitious, large-scale, and collaborative projects through the Pacific Salmon Foundation's Community Salmon Program,' said Michael Meneer, PSF president and CEO. Chloë Fraser, PSF's communications coordinator, said the Haida Fisheries Program will benefit from the grant by installing a solar-powered, waterproof camera system into the Copper River aluminum weir to improve fish counting efforts. The Program is a department within the Council of the Haida Nation developed in 2023. The project will occur on Moresby Island in Copper River, which flows into Copper Bay south of Sandspit. Fraser noted the existing Copper River weir infrastructure has been in operation since 1992 and will now be fitted with a new camera system mounted on removable panels. The camera footage will be analyzed by an AI tool that leverages computer vision models to count coho and pink salmon returns automatically. This will address the critical challenge of monitoring wild salmon and collecting real-time, in-season data to inform fisheries and conservation management. 'Notably, this will allow for the first-ever coho escapement estimate on the river,' said Fraser. This is the count of adult coho salmon that survive the journey to sea and return to the river to spawn, which is an essential indicator for measuring the health of a salmon population. The Haida Fisheries Program is leading this work in collaboration with scientists at the Wild Salmon Centre, the Pacific Salmon Foundation, and several local partners. On the other hand, the Tlell Watershed Society will use its funds to upgrade its fish fence. Since 1999, the fence wall has been monitoring annual returns of coho and pink salmon in the salmon-bearing Tlell River. In addition to reducing stream impacts and improving crew safety, the upgrade will help extend the monitoring season during low-flow years. 'We now have one of the longest-running contemporary fish fence datasets in northern B.C., especially for wild stocks. Longer data records are more valuable. Two data points don't tell you much. But 25? That tells you quite a bit more,' said marine biologist and Tlell Watershed Society Director Leandre Vigneault. Fraser emphasized that long-term datasets like this are increasingly valuable for effective conservation with climate change driving greater variability to river flows, water temperatures, and ocean conditions. Both Haida Fisheries and the Tlell Watershed Society expect to complete their initiatives by late fall 2025. The final stage will involve wrapping up monitoring and taking down parts of the camera system from the river at the end of the salmon spawning season. The Community Salmon Program receives generous support from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Key contributors include AltaGas, Enbridge, Methanex, Mosaic Forest Management, Seaspan, Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee, Trans Mountain, and The Wolrige Foundation. Error!
