YSRCP MP arrested in ₹3,200cr liquor scam in Andhra

YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy (File Photo) VIJAYAWADA: YSRCP MP P V Midhun Reddy was arrested by Andhra SIT late on Saturday after nearly seven hours of questioning in the alleged Rs 3,200 crore liquor scam. The arrest comes after the anticipatory bail petitions of Mithun Reddy were rejected by AP high court and Supreme Court, reports Madhu Rasala. He is the second politician to be arrested in the alleged scam that took place during the previous YSRCP rule. With the latest arrest, the number of accused arrested so far has increased to 12. Earlier, Midhun Reddy arrived in Vijayawada from New Delhi amid heightened security. Krishna district police, under the supervision of Gannavaram DSP, ensured a tight security cordon around the airport. All vehicles entering the premises were thoroughly inspected, and the MP was escorted by police to the SIT office. Police had earlier issued a lookout notice and alerted immigration authorities. The SIT, constituted to investigate alleged irregularities in the liquor policy during the previous YSRCP regime, has been probing alleged illegal financial transactions, policy manipulation, and the misuse of official machinery in the framing and implementation of the state's liquor policy. Sources close to the probe said Reddy was allegedly involved in key decision-making meetings regarding the state's liquor procurement and distribution mechanisms. The SIT has reportedly tracked a Rs 5 crore fund transfer from a third-party company to a firm linked to the MP, raising suspicions of money laundering and quid pro quo arrangements. Officials believe Midhun Reddy possesses crucial information about the ultimate beneficiaries of the proceeds generated through the liquor policy.

YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy arrested in Rs 3,200-crore liquor scam in Andhra

Amaravati, Jul 19 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh police on Saturday arrested YSRCP Lok Sabha member PV Midhun Reddy in the alleged Rs 3,200-crore liquor scam during the previous YSRCP regime. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged liquor scam grilled Midhun Reddy for several hours today and followed it up with his arrest at around 7.30 pm in Vijayawada. 'Yes (he has been arrested). The process (to produce him before a court) is going on," Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha told PTI over phone. Midhun Reddy represents Rajampet constituency in Andhra Pradesh. The YSRCP leader arrived in Vijayawada earlier today to attend the probe and his questioning comes in the wake of the arrest of other accused persons–Dhanunjay Reddy, Krishna Mohan Reddy and Balaji Govindappa. Meanwhile, the opposition party slammed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for allegedly indulging in vindictive behaviour and foisting 'false' cases against people close to YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The case against Mithun Reddy is part of a larger vindictive conspiracy to arrest people who are in close proximity to the party leadership, said senior YSRCP leader Malladi Vishnu in a release. 'But we will bounce back to call the bluff of Chandrababu Naidu," he said, adding that the more vindictive the actions of the Naidu government, the stronger YSRCP's resolve becomes to fight back and expose the 'failures and corruption' of the coalition government. Further, senior YSRCP leader L Appi Reddy said Midhun Reddy comes from a family with a long and distinguished political history. 'I am confident that justice will prevail and that the judiciary will act fairly. His decision to attend the inquiry shows his determination to prove his innocence and his respect for the rule of law," Reddy told PTI Videos. ‘Liquor scam' case: YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy to appear before Andhra SIT today, likely to be arrested

YSR Congress Party MP P V Midhun Reddy will on Saturday appear before the Andhra Pradesh CID's Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged liquor scam worth Rs 3,500 crore. Reddy is likely to be arrested in connection with the case. The SIT had earlier asked Reddy to appear before it to record his statement in connection with the alleged scam, but he had avoided doing so. The MP, however, decided to appear before the SIT after the Supreme Court dismissed his anticipatory bail application on Friday. The three-time MP from Rajampet had filed a special leave petition challenging the Andhra Pradesh High Court's July 15 rejection of his anticipatory bail in the case allegedly involving the State Beverages Corporation. After the high court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, the SIT issued a look-out circular against Reddy to prevent the MP from leaving the country. According to sources in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Reddy was not cooperating with the investigation and dodged summons several times. In the First Information Report (FIR), the SIT has alleged that Reddy was the leader of a group that pushed a policy favouring new alcohol companies and distilleries in return for kickbacks. The 'kingpin' of the scam, the SIT alleged, was Kasireddy Rajasekhar Reddy alias Raj Kasireddy, who was IT Advisor to former chief minister and YSR Congress Party leader Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. Responding to the allegations, the YSRCP had earlier accused the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government of a witch hunt, and said the SIT had found no material evidence against the accused. The alleged liquor scam Ahead of the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly election, the YSRCP had promised a phased ban on liquor and to discourage alcohol consumption by increasing its price. On assuming power, the YSRCP government formulated a new liquor policy that came into effect at the end of 2019. Instead of facilitating an eventual ban on liquor in the state, the policy encouraged a money-laundering racket that flourished until 2024, as per the SIT set up by the TDP government under N Chandrababu Naidu.

Government suppressing issues of public interest: Former Andhra CM Jagan

VIJAYAWADA: Former Chief Minister and YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy tore into the coalition government, alleging that unprecedented and atrocious developments were taking place in the State, which should be challenged as the voice of the people. Addressing a meeting of the YSRCP Political Advisory Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, he accused the coalition government of brazenly arresting people and foisting false cases to create a fear psychosis and subdue the opposing voice. 'It is time we should stand up for the people, and start questioning the TDP-led NDA government,' he observed. 'The government is making all efforts to suppress issues of public interest, irregularities, corruption, and mal governance through diversion tactics, either by making arrest of high-profile people or spreading false narratives on the opposition,' he alleged. The arrest of the former Intelligence Chief, the questioning of YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy and other former officials were part of the vindictive nature of the government. If the government continues on its way forward in this manner, the deterioration of all systems will further deepen, and anarchy will prevail. 'We have to rip open the government's malicious intentions on various issues, including the allotment of land on a platter to companies of their choice with no proper checks and balances, besides giving contracts at inflated prices at their whims and fancies without following any procedure or prudence,' he said. Furthermore, the former chief minister alleged, 'The State's revenues are shrinking, and wealth is being created for a select few. All our welfare schemes have come to a grinding halt, while those promised by the coalition government have not taken off, while loans are mounting, which an indication of financial indiscipline.'
