My father and my mother's brother began their careers in the now defunct savings and loan industry in Chicago in the late 1950s. My uncle George was a young executive at Fairfield Savings and Loan, where his father, my grandfather, was president. In the early 1940s, my grandfather—'Pa' to us grandkids—had been a federal bank examiner. When the government decided to convert the failing Fairfield bank into a savings and loan—commonplace after the Depression—Pa got the nod. Right place, right time. My dad was an apprentice real estate appraiser at Draper and Kramer, a mortgage banking company. Established in 1893 by Arthur W. Draper and Adolph F. Kramer, the firm still operates today. According to its website, it became 'one of Chicago's premiere mortgage banking and residential real estate management firms,' promoting home ownership and providing residential financing during a critical period of city growth.

Oldest DHS Old Boy dies at age 102
DURBAN High School (DHS) is mourning the loss of the oldest DHS Old Boy, Selwyn Lurie, who died on Thursday at home, three weeks before his 103rd birthday. On the school's social media, DHS said, 'Mr Lurie's long and inspiring life was a testament to the enduring spirit of Durban High School. We were honoured to have shared a special moment with him earlier this year, when our boys had the privilege of hearing his heartfelt video message on Founders Day — a message that will now be remembered even more dearly. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lurie family during this time of loss. May his memory continue to inspire generations of DHS boys to come.' Lurie's passing was confirmed by his family who described him as a person with a lot of energy, love and care. On Facebook, Vanessa Jubiler Lurie said, 'We are heartbroken to share the loss of our beloved father, Selwyn Lurie, this morning July 17, the 21st of Tammuz. Our amazing Pa is now at peace with his beloved wife and our mom Barbara, and their son and our brother Alon. Pa died peacefully in his sleep at home at the age of 102, three weeks before his 103rd birthday.' Lurie lived a full and interesting life, as a fighter pilot in WW2, builder of Ashkelon in the early days of the state of Israel, CEO of a leading textile manufacturer in South Africa, and the co-founder of Kehillat Ahavat Yisrael in San Diego, US. Family meant everything to him, and of all his incredible accomplishments, the one he was most proud of was the family he and Ma built. We are honoured and grateful beyond measure to have had such incredible parents, for the endless love they brought to all of us, and for the countless ways in which they helped, guided, supported and adored each of us, our children and our grandchildren,' said Vanessa. Condolences have been pouring in for the Lurie family. Clifton School in Morningside wrote, 'We share in your grief at the passing of a beloved member of your Old Boys family. May Mr Lurie's dear soul rest in eternal peace.' Erika Collins said, 'Condolences to his family and friends. Sounds like he achieved a lot in his full life.' Neil Peter Lamble added, 'What a man, what an amazing innings and what a passionate supporter of his old school DHS. RIP Selwyn – and deepest condolences to your family.' Pakistan, Indonesia discuss defence ties

The Indonesian minister conveyed the best wishes of President Prabowo Subianto for the prime minister and people of Pakistan, the press release added. Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz "reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to explore and expand collaboration with Indonesia in joint ventures of investment in mutually beneficial projects", the statement said. The prime minister also reiterated Pakistan's commitment to enhance bilateral cooperation with Indonesia in all avenues, including economic, strategic and trade sectors, along with defence and defence production. He highlighted that Pakistan and Indonesia enjoyed a "longstanding friendship rooted in shared cultural, religious and historical bonds, supporting each other at international forums". Both sides stressed the importance of "enhancing multifaceted bilateral cooperation", according to the PID. "The meeting underscored the deep-rooted historical, brotherly and friendly bilateral relations between Pakistan and Indonesia," the statement noted. Recalling his meeting last year with Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto on the sidelines of Developing-8 Summit in Cairo, PM Shehbaz conveyed his best wishes for the Indonesian president. The prime minister also reviewed ongoing initiatives under the Pakistan-Indonesia Defence Cooperation Agreement and agreed to "accelerate the implementation of key areas of mutual interest", the PID added. Meeting with COAS Indonesian Defence Minister Lieutenant General (Retd) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday to discuss strengthening military ties, the military's media wing reported. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Indonesian defence minister, who is leading a delegation of senior representatives from various military and intelligence agencies, held wide-ranging talks with Pakistan's top military leadership. Both sides exchanged views on regional security, defence cooperation, and avenues to enhance bilateral military collaboration. The meeting underscored the longstanding friendship between the two nations, with particular emphasis on mutual cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the region. Field Marshal Munir highlighted the importance of mutual cooperation in maintaining peace and stability in the region. The Indonesian minister, in turn, appreciated the professional achievements of the Pakistan Army, particularly its role in the fight against terrorism.
