James Gunn Says PADDINGTON 2 Is 'One of the Greatest Movies Ever Made' — GeekTyrant
James Gunn has never been shy about his eclectic taste in movies, and now he's revealed a favorite that might surprise some fans… Paddington 2 . Gunn said during an appearance on Konbini's Video Club series: '[Paddington in Peru], I haven't seen, but Paddington 2 is a classic film. It's one of the greatest movies ever made. People think I'm being ironic when I say that. I am not. I am absolutely telling the truth.' Released in 2017, Paddington 2 follows everyone's favorite marmalade-loving bear, voiced by Ben Whishaw, as he navigates a new life in London. Things take a turn when Paddington is wrongly accused of theft, leading his adoptive family on a mission to clear his name. It's a wonderful and charming film and the cast includes Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, and Hugh Grant in one of his most delightfully villainous roles. Gunn isn't the only one singing the film's praises. Critics loved Paddington 2 upon release, and it famously held a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, briefly dethroning Orson Welles' Citizen Kane before slipping to a still-astonishing 99%. That's some serious bear power. As for the franchise, a third installment, Paddington in Peru , hit theaters last year. Meanwhile, Gunn has his own major project with Superman and several other DCU projects currently in development. It's not hard to see why James Gunn thinks Paddington 2 is one of the greatest movies ever made. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out!

Miriam O'Callaghan brushes off 'rubbish' compliment from Brendan Gleeson
RTE presenter Miriam O'Callaghan had no time for Brendan Gleeson's compliments during a recent radio interview with the beloved pair. Speaking with the iconic actor on the Sunday with Miriam show on RTE Radio One, the seasoned host had her own warm opening remarks rebounded to her but she was quick to 'rubbish' them. Getting the interview underway, Miriam said: 'But first this morning, actor and national treasure, Brendan Gleeson, is here in studio, morning to you Brendan.' RTE presenter Miriam O'Callaghan had no time for Brendan Gleeson's compliments during a recent radio interview. Pic: Miriam O'Callaghan/X The veteran actor chuckled and simply replied: 'Bit of a national treasure yourself.' Miriam instantly responded: 'Yeah, rubbish', as she brushed off the niceties with some sarcastic banter. However, she then shared her own thoughts on the Gangs of New York and Harry Potter star, showcasing her obvious high regard of the man. Miriam O'Callaghan and Brendan Gleeson. Pic: Miriam O'Callaghan/Instagram Miriam said: 'It is lovely to see you because even when you came in this morning I noticed you were downstairs chatting to everyone. And I know everyone in Ireland will have their own favourite role from Colm in Banshees, Knuckles McGinty in Paddington 2, The Guard, In Bruges, Mad Eye Moody in Harry Potter, I could go on and on. 'But what always strikes me, and I saw it this morning, is that you return after every role to Dublin, to home, to yourself. You're still the Brendan we all know and love.' Miriam O'Callaghan. Pic: Fran Veale Brendan told Miriam about how his life has constantly changed as he ages but always makes a point to maintain his 'essentials'. The 70-year-old expressed strong gratitude to all of the kind-hearted people in his life, while sharing his belief that most individuals are inclined towards goodness. Clinging to this notion has made balancing life 'very easy' for him. Brendan also made sure to thank Miriam for the opportunity to discuss St Francis Hospice in Dublin, where both of his parents received care. The Banshees of Inisherin star praised the hospice for being a facility built around kindness. He also mentioned the new 24-bed unit extension which is underway at the facility and the Buy a Brick fundraiser, where virtual bricks can be bought for €25 and personalised. Brendan said: 'You can put something on it, maybe just the name of somebody you've lost, maybe just a thanks to the staff of the hospice, maybe just something that they said. 'And it's like, here's this social media thing where you get to put something positive and beautiful and give a gift of even just somebody's name.' The multi award-winning actor is currently busy preparing for his return to the Irish stage with Conor McPherson's 'The Weir' at 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin. The play will run from August 8 to September 6 and also stars Owen McDonnell, Seán McGinley, Kate Phillips and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

The founder of Alamo Drafthouse is debuting a swanky new movie theater in Chelsea
How to get Tim League, the founder of the famously strict Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chains, to allow phones and chatter during a screening? Metro Private Cinema, his upcoming venture in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, is the unique, if pricey, solution. Opening sometime this summer (late August or early September is the current target), the 20-screen complex will allow cinephiles to rent plush screening rooms for groups of four to 20 people. Each four-hour booking includes a pre-movie dinner and your pick of flick. Recent releases are prioritized, with a rotating selection of classics (all-timers like Jaws and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and off-beat ones, like Donnie Darko and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, are first on the slate) available. Want to screen an even deeper cut? Metro will find it for you, for an extra fee. Speaking of fees, experiences range from $200, for the smallest room, to $1,000 for the 20-count. Meals are $100 per person with alcoholic drinks upping the bill an extra $50 or more. But League maintains this is a way to eventize moviegoing at a time when the practice is in peril of disappearing, and when social media is filled with complaints about bad behavior, service and quality at most multiplexes. On par with Alamo's creative upscale cuisine, menus will be seasonal, and some films will get their unique culinary adventures. (Look out for special Paddington 2 and Goodfellas menus, and Les Blank's 1980 documentary, Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers, will have a particularly pungent pairing.) And, from the looks of the theater's website, rooms will have vibe-setting features like vinyl record players and a variety of seating options, for those who prefer a spine-correcting stool over a comfy couch. Stationed near many of New York's most accessible subway lines, this first iteration will serve as a pilot for future Metro Private Cinemas.

Ever fallen asleep in public like Hugh Grant at Wimbledon? This is what it could mean
Actor Hugh Grant has gone viral again – this time for falling asleep at Wimbledon. Sitting behind Queen Camilla in the Royal Box with his wife Anna Eberstein, the Notting Hill star seemingly started to doze off during yesterday's quarter-final match between Novak Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli on Centre Court. (To be fair to him, it did last 3 hours and 11 minutes!) Although not a particularly long nap, the moment was caught on camera – with even the BBC poking fun at him, writing on social media: "It's all got a bit much for Hugh Grant." Since, fans have shared their admiration, describing the Paddington 2 actor as a "mood." After all – nodding off in the summer heat is entirely relatable. It's all got a bit too much for Hugh Grant 😴😂#Wimbledon — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) July 9, 2025 According to Professor Kevin Morgan of Loughborough University, an expert who has dedicated his career to researching human sleep, there are a number of reasons why we – including Grant – fall asleep in public spaces. "Our circadian rhythm is an underlying, physiological ebbing and flowing that drives almost everything," Professor Morgan explains. "It drives our sleep, fullness and wakefulness. It drives most of the things that are rhythmic in our life, and these are usually very clear patterns that our bodies adhere to." Equally, when we age, it alters our circadian rhythm. Morgan says: "In younger people, the peaks and troughs are very clear. They tend to sleep really well, wake up comfortably and hammer through the day. But the older we get – certainly beyond 60 – things change and our sleep gets shorter. You start going to bed earlier, waking up earlier, and your sleep is both lighter and more fragmented. "Put that all together and it means generally you go into the day more vulnerable to those troughs." Now, we're not suggesting that dear Hugh was bored by Djokovic and Cobolli's playing, but oftentimes, a lack of stimulus creates a setting in which you are more likely to fall asleep, according to Morgan. He says: "While we may be able to tolerate less exciting things – more monotonous or boring things at other points of the day, if these things occur mid-afternoon, chances are we will succumb to our sleepiness." On that note, while the sound of tennis balls being hit from one side of the court to the other might not be the direct cause of sleepiness, Morgan agrees that certain environmental factors, such as noises, rhythmic sounds and vibrations, can encourage drowsiness. He adds: "There's a kind of reciprocal rhythm to the sound of a tennis ball being hit. Of course, if you're really into the match, your arousal levels may be high, but if not, it can feed into this monotony. "Studies show that if you're tired enough, no amount of noise will prevent you from nodding off – so it's not that you need to have some kind of hypnotic, rhythmic pulse to fall asleep. But it can set up an environment which encourages it." Of course, this week has been pretty warm in the UK, and temperatures in Centre Court can be rather toasty, given the design of the space – something that Morgan believes could have played a part in the actor's sleepiness. "It's no accident that in countries in southern Europe they have adopted the siesta in the middle of the day," he says. "It coincides, again, with our circadian rhythm and the hot weather encourages a kind of stupor – one of the reasons why being that we tend not to be so active in the heat and generally feel lethargic. So, again, it's about people's natural propensities interacting with environmental challenges." Another key factor in why we can feel drowsy in the day is how well we slept the night before – and for how long. "If you go into the day sleepy, you're more likely going to fall asleep under any circumstances," Morgan comments. Finally, what we eat throughout the day can have a big impact on how we feel and perform. For example, if you have a heavy, carb-filled lunch, you're more likely to start drifting off in the afternoon as a result.
