Boyce hat-trick as Derry City put seven past Waterford

Liam Boyce scored a hat-trick as Derry City thrashed Waterford 7-2 to extend their unbeaten run in the League of Ireland Premier Division to five games. Two early goals from Boyce, a stunning strike from Sadou Diallo and Mark Connolly's header gave Derry a 4-0 lead at the Padraig Amond and Michael Duffy netted early in the second half before Boyce completed his treble just before the hour mark. Gavin Whyte added to the impressive tally for the evening before Amond netted a late second consolation Candystripes, who have now won their past four games, sit eight points adrift of leaders Shamrock Rovers - who face Sligo Rovers on Saturday - in second with a game in hand. Candystripes race clear in first half The home side took the lead in some style just five minutes into the game when Boyce's powerful strike from the edge of the box found the top left-hand nearly doubled their lead just two minutes later when Connolly nodded Duffy's corner towards goal, but his header struck the doubled his tally when Duffy played the ball back from the left wing for the striker to convert on 24 Lynch's men did not settle for a two-goal advantage with Bradley Wade palming Ronan Boyce's effort to safety before twice thwarting the Waterford keeper could do nothing to stop Diallo who made it 3-0 on 36 minutes when his thunderous right-footed shot went in off the crossbar. Duffy was provider once again just five minutes later when his corner was headed home by Derry captain Connolly. Goals galore at the Brandywell Waterford got on the scoresheet four minutes after the restart when Amond controlled a long ball, burst into the box and slotted home through the legs of Duffy restored Derry's four-goal advantage when he slipped the ball on to his left foot to beat his marker Darragh Leahy and fired past and Boyce, who have a combined 58 Northern Ireland caps, linked up to make it 6-1 with the latter poking home Whyte's looping cross to complete his got in on the act in the 73rd minute when his low shot found the bottom right-hand netted the final goal of the game with 11 minutes to go when Amond struck again, but the night belonged to the free-scoring Candystripes, who travel to Sligo on 12 July.

Shamrock Rovers gain ground on challengers with 1-0 win over Waterford

League of Ireland: Shamrock Rovers 1 (Gaffney 74) Waterford 0 Shamrock Rovers extended their lead at the top of the League of Ireland to 11 points after battling to a 1-0 home win over Waterford . The deadlock was broken by a tap-in from veteran Rovers striker Rory Gaffney, after a long-range shot slipped out of goalkeeper Stephen McMullan's hands in the 74th minute. Although an entertaining game, both sides played with three centre backs and defences dominated as clear-cut chances were hard to come by. Gaffney appearance off the bench on 65 minutes proved critical, providing the only goal of the evening. The first glimpse of action came in the fourth minute when a ball over the top found Tommy Lonergan in space, but the angle was too tight for Padraig Amond to finish. READ MORE In the fifth minute some clever Rovers interplay set Graham Burke free on the left flank, and his cross found Danny Grant at the far post. Despite having plenty of time to get the shot off, Grant's close-range effort hit the post. Rovers dictated the early goings, with Danny Mandriou and Burke getting on the ball and looking to find runners in behind. Wing backs Grant and Josh Honohan were constantly looking beyond the Waterford defence. The visitors started to liven up then, with midfielder Olujimi James Ayodele Olayinka drawing a fine save from Edward McGinty, and Honohan did well to stop Padraig Amond getting to the rebound. At the other end, Waterford goalkeeper Stephen McMullan produced a brilliant save of his own, tipping a curling effort from Honohan just around the post. Rory Gaffney in action for Shamrock Rovers. Photograph: James Lawlor/Inpho In the 25th minute Burke was fouled on the edge of the box. He rolled the free off to Mandriou, who blazed his effort over the bar. Olayinka again stung McGinty's gloves, this time with a long range effort, after beating his man with a graceful turn. Neither side could take control of the rhythm of the game for very long and soon Lonergan found himself in behind for Waterford's clearest chance of the half, but McGinty did well to prevent the ball going under him, saving the shot with his foot. At half-time, Rovers' patient build-up had given them most of the possession, although their attack was lacking incision. John Coleman's side on the other hand would have been happy to have played their way into the game after a quiet start. The small pocket of Waterford fans in Tallaght Stadium would have had their hearts in their mouths when Noonan applied pressure to McMullan, but the goalkeeper just managed to poke the ball away from the striker. Rovers and Waterford both had half-chances early in the second half. Most of Rovers' good play came through Burke, who set up Watts and Honohan for shots at goal, before coming off for Jack Byrne in the 65th minute. The hosts started to pile on the pressure from there, putting on another striker in Rory Gaffney, who could have put his side ahead but for some fantastic defending by Boyle, blocking a goal-bound effort. Only minutes later though, Gaffney did put Rovers into the lead. Danny Mandriou had a pop from distance which McMullan spilt badly, and the striker tucked the rebound into the net. Substitute Maxim Kovaleskis was a bright spark on the right wing, the 17-year-old setting up Gaffney for another chance. Although Waterford pushed for an equaliser late on, they could not create a clear opportunity. The result sees the Hoops extend their lead at the top of the table after second-place Bohemians drew with Sligo Rovers. The result at Dalymount saw Sligo gain a point on Waterford in eighth, eight points above the relegation play-off spot. SHAMROCK ROVERS: McGinty, Grant (Kovaleskis, 76), Lopes, Grace, Cleary, Honohan, Healy, Watts (Gaffney, 65), Mandriou (89), Burke (Byrne, 65), Noonan (O'Neill, 88). WATERFORD: McMullan, Horton, Burke (Coyle, 80), Boyle, Leahy, Dempsey (White, 71), McDonald (McMenamy, 68), Glenfield, Olayinka, Lonergan, Amond. Referee: Paul Norton. Attendance: 4,014.

Life begins after Damien Duff for Shelbourne with thrilling draw

Harry Wood scored a brace as life after Damien Duff began with a share of the spoils for Shelbourne after a titanic battle with Waterford FC in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division at the RSC. The man who gave Duff his finest moment at Shels with the winner that won them the league title against Derry last season popped up with an equalising goal seconds after Padraig Amond had put the hosts in front early in the second-half. A whirlwind 36 hours for the Tolka Park club saw Joey O'Brien take over as interim manager and he was on the edge of the touchline like his predecessor, dishing out the orders as a dramatic start to both halves was the tale of this encounter, but he could have been celebrating seven minutes into added time. O'Brien proclaimed in his post-match interview that it was a 'mad 24 hours' and that the players were 'shocked' by Duff's departure early on Sunday morning, but that his players were 'paid professionals', and it was Daniel Kelly who nearly won him his first game in the hotseat only to rattle the bar. Life after their former manager was only three minutes old when they struck the front. Tyreke Wilson found space for himself down the left before putting in a ball that saw Mipo Adubeko get the slightest of touches that took the ball into the path of Harry Wood at the back post, and he squeezed the ball past keeper Stephen McMullan. The madness continued on the field of play five minutes later as Shels gifted their hosts an equalising goal. McMullan's long clearance was touched back to Kameron Ledwidge, who was on his knees when leaving a header back to Conor Kearns short as Grant Horton nipped in between defender and keeper to finish to an empty net. It took strong hands from Blues netminder Stephen McMullan to deny the visitors from regaining the lead on 20 minutes. Ali Coote cut through the centre like a knife through butter before slipping the ball out left to Mipo Adubeko, but his stinging right-footed drive from the top of the area was kept out. When Adubeko outmuscled Darragh Leahy on the right-side five minutes later, he released Harry Wood into a one-on-one run with Jesse Dempsey, and after the winger got the better of the battle, he couldn't beat McMullan, who saved at the expense of a corner at his near post. A wind-assisted Stephen McMullan goal-kick on 41 minutes nearly bounced nicely for Padraig Amond on 41 minutes, but keeper Kearns came out to collect just in front of the striker got to the ball before the centre forward before Amond was pulled back by Sean Gannon three minutes later, An incredible start to the first-half was bettered by a kamikaze start to the second. Within three minutes, the champions were the cause of their own downfall again as they fell behind. Paddy Barrett's clearance off Conan Noonan saw his shot parried by Conor Kearns, but Padraig Amond was on hand to finish the rebound from close-range. Sixty seconds later, and Joey O'Brien was celebrating an equaliser. Mark Coyle raced through the heart of the Waterford middle unchallenged before spraying the ball out for Ali Coote, who put in a teasing delivery, and Harry Wood was on hand to touch home. There was time for more drama in the seventh added minute of five as the impressive Wood burst from midfield to slip the ball out wide right for Daniel Kelly, who let fly with a thunderous strike, but his effort came crashing back off the crossbar with McMullan beaten to the sound of the final whistle. Waterford FC: McMullan; Horton (McCormack 84), McDonald (White 84), Leahy, Burke, Dempsey (Boyle 62); Lonergan, Olayinka, Glenfield (McMenamy 72), Noonan; Amond. Waterford FC 2 Bohemian FC 1 Adrian Flanagan reports from the Regional Sports Centre TWO GOALS IN the dying minutes of the first-half from Padraig Amond and Conan Noonan steered Waterford FC to a massive 2-1 win over second-placed Bohemian FC in their SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division at a rocking RSC. Rhys Brennan could have put the visitors in front on 13 minutes when the centre forward peeled off his marker to latch onto a long ball from Rob Cornwall from his centre-half position, but his first-time of the advancing Stephen McMullan went wide. Blues keeper McMullan made a fine double save to keep Bohs at bay on 34 minutes. Rooney swung in a right-wing corner that saw the ball break to Dawson Devoy, who saw his crisp snapshot saved before the netminder responded well to save Rob Cornwall's rebound header. After Lonegan went agonisingly close to a brilliant opener for the hosts six minutes later, only to fire inches wide, the centre forward played a part in a penalty that gave the hosts the lead in the final minute of the half. He was bundled over in the area by Leigh Kavanagh, and referee Marc Lynch pointed straight to the spot. Although Bohs keeper Kacper Chorazka guessed the right way, he couldn't keep out Padraig Amond's brilliant 12-yarder.
