Police tracking suspects in Raub telecommunication tower vandalism

RAUB: Police are tracking down suspects involved in the theft of card slot components from a telecommunications tower in Dong, near here, which caused service disruptions in the surrounding areas. Raub district police chief, Superintendent Mohd Shahril Abd Rahman, said the department received three reports from telecommunications service providers yesterday. "Due to the network disruption, the service providers deployed their staff to inspect the tower and discovered the card slot components were missing. "The damage to the tower caused service interruptions, as the network could no longer process internet data," he said in a statement today. He said the case is being investigated as theft under the Penal Code. "We urge anyone with information about the incident to report any suspicious activity to the Raub district police headquarters at 09-3552222," he added. Yesterday, it was reported that the act of vandalism led to mobile phone and internet outages affecting thousands of users. The compromised tower served as a hub linking eight other transmission towers located in Kampung Gesing, Sungai Ruan, Kampung Jelu, Bukit Pampong, Kampung Chendra Chinchin, Kampung Tanjung Putus, Kampung Temau and Kampung Gali Hilir. Meanwhile, Pahang State Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports and Non-governmental Organisations Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal said all affected towers were fully restored by 5.30pm today. "The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), along with the service provider, conducted investigations and replaced the damaged components. "Several critical telecommunications transmission components were vandalised, causing eight towers to be non-functional. These components have since been replaced, with necessary upgrading works carried out," he wrote in a Facebook post, thanking MCMC and the service provider for their swift action in restoring the network.
