Israeli Occupation destroys 'Badu al-Kaabneh' School, displaces Arab al-Mlihāt Community
Ariha – SABA: Israeli occupation forces stormed and destroyed the 'Badu al-Kaabneh' Coeducational Primary School east of Ariha today, Friday, and forcibly displaced the residents of the neighboring Arab al-Mlihāt community — an act the Palestinian Ministry of Education condemned as a crime against the right to education and dignified living. In an official statement, the ministry stressed that this violation goes beyond the demolition of a school building, describing it as a systematic attempt to undermine the future of students in marginalized and threatened areas. It noted that the Israeli authorities aim to impose a forced reality by emptying the land of its native inhabitants and depriving children of a safe educational environment. The Ministry added that the incident represents a blatant breach of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international agreements that guarantee the right to education. It further emphasized that the continued Israeli violations require urgent international action, calling on all human rights and humanitarian organizations — foremost among them the United Nations — to exert pressure on Israeli authorities to cease these abuses, reopen the school, and guarantee the children's right to return to their classrooms without fear. Israel's War Kills 16,600 Students, Wrecks Gaza Schools
More than 16,600 students have been killed and over 26,000 injured in Gaza and the West Bank since Israel's war on the Palestinian territories began on October 7, 2023, according to a grim new report from the Palestinian Ministry of Education. In a statement published Tuesday, the ministry revealed that 16,470 of the student fatalities occurred in Gaza, where 25,374 others were wounded. In the West Bank, Israeli forces killed 137 students and injured 897 more, in addition to detaining 754 students since the start of the assault. The statement also confirmed that 914 teachers and education staff have been killed, and 4,363 others wounded across both regions. In the West Bank alone, at least 196 educators have been arrested. The ongoing Israeli bombardment has devastated the education sector in Gaza. According to the ministry, 352 public schools have suffered severe damage, including 111 that were completely destroyed. Another 91 government-run schools and 89 UNRWA-run schools were damaged by direct shelling and sabotage. Higher education institutions have not been spared either. Twenty universities and colleges in Gaza sustained heavy damage, and 60 university buildings were completely demolished. Meanwhile, in the West Bank, Israeli forces have stormed and vandalized 152 schools and eight universities, destroying school fences in Jenin, Tulkarm, and the towns of Bruqin and Kafr al-Dik west of Salfit. The Ministry of Education warned that nearly 788,000 students in Gaza remain completely deprived of their right to education, unable to attend school or university since the beginning of the war. This includes high school seniors who, for the second year in a row, are unable to take their final exams due to the ongoing violence. In contrast, students in the West Bank are scheduled to begin their high school examinations on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The statement concluded by noting that Israeli authorities continue to shut down six UNRWA-run schools in Jerusalem and its suburbs, closures that have remained in effect since May 8. Israel shuts Unrwa schools in occupied East Jerusalem
Israeli police forcibly closed schools operated by the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (Unrwa) in occupied East Jerusalem on Thursday morning, escalating tensions and sparking fears of attacks on students and teachers. The Palestinian Ministry of Education condemned the closures as 'a crime against education and is part of a systematic and ongoing assault on education in Jerusalem'. Deploying forces around school premises, Israel issued evacuation and closure orders, actions the ministry decried as violating international laws, including the right to education and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The order was issued by the Israeli Ministry of Education, which claimed the schools were operating without licences. This means around 800 children will receive no education, only weeks before the end of the school year. Instead, they will be set adrift in the East Jerusalem school system, which is already plagued by classroom shortages and funding cuts. Since the 1950s, Unrwa has run schools and medical clinics in East Jerusalem, which Israel seized during the Arab-Israeli war of 1967.
