Youth free from addiction essential for India's development: Mandaviya
1 2 Varanasi: Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday said India can become a developed nation only when the youth remain free from both digital and substance abuse. "We need to make our youth addiction-free to realise the dream of a developed India by 2047. Leaders of religious and social organisations must join the drug-free India campaign to keep our youth away from drugs, mobile phones and reels," Mandaviya said while addressing the inaugural session of the two-day 'Youth Spiritual Summit' at the Rudraksha Convention Centre on Saturday. The summit was launched by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the theme 'Drug-Free Youth for a Developed India'. It brought together more than 600 participants representing 122 spiritual and socio-cultural organisations from all over the country. Mandaviya said on 15 Aug, 2022, during India's 76th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his vision for the next 25 years through the 'Panch Pran' of Amrit Kaal. The minister emphasised that youth would play a vital role in transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, as 65% of the population is under the age of 35. "Our young generation must not only be seen as beneficiaries but also as changemakers who shape the future of the nation. However, substance abuse is one of the biggest threats facing youth today. Addiction is trapping them at a crucial point in life and posing a serious challenge to national progress," he said. The minister urged religious and social leaders to use their platforms to spread awareness among youth about staying away from addiction. "A single camp or limited efforts are not enough—we need a mass movement where every citizen pledges to inspire at least five others to join the anti-drug campaign," he said. The summit will conclude on Sunday with the release of the 'Kashi Declaration,' a document reflecting the collective vision and commitment of youth and spiritual leaders. This document will offer a detailed action plan for building a drug-free India and act as a guiding charter for policymakers, civil society organisations and youth networks working in the fields of de-addiction and rehabilitation. The summit features four thematic sessions focused on key areas: understanding addiction and its impact on youth; breaking drug trafficking networks and commercial interests; designing effective campaigns and outreach strategies; and building a long-term commitment toward a drug-free India by 2047.

Goyal urges youth to consider participating in public life citing Modi's call
Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Friday urged youth to consider participating in public life, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to induct 100,000 of them in politics and public service to become agents of change. Union minister Piyush Goyal urged the youth to take charge of India's future. (X) 'There is a need for capable and committed individuals to contribute to policymaking with compassion, dedication, and a spirit of service,' he said while inaugurating India's International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Conference 2025 in Noida. According to its website, IIMUN is a youth-run organisation that aims to bring the world closer, the Indian way. Its advisory board members include businessmen Ajay Piramal, Deepak Parekh, Nadir Godrej, politicians Shashi Tharoor, Jayant Sinha, music composer AR Rahman, and athlete PT Usha. Modi resolved to free the country and politics from dynastic politics and casteism in his Independence Day speech on August 15 last year, and said initially they want to bring forward 100,000 young people whose families have no political background. '...those whose parents, siblings, uncles, aunts have never been involved in politics, in any generation. We want fresh blood, one lakh such talented young people, whether they come into the panchayat, municipal corporations, district councils, state assemblies, or the Lok Sabha.' Goyal urged the youth to take charge of India's future. 'Be the change makers, the movers and shakers of tomorrow's India. With collective resolve, we can overcome every challenge and lead our nation to greater heights,' he told a gathering of students. Goyal asked the youth to actively contribute to building a Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047 as envisioned by the Prime Minister with the Panch Pran or five pledges for Amrit Kaal, the transition period. He said India stands at the cusp of a major transformation, recalling Modi's August 15, 2022, address that the 25-year period of Amrit Kaal leading up to the centenary of India's independence in 2047, is a defining moment for the nation. He called upon the youth to commit themselves to making India a developed country by 2047. Goyal spoke about the first pledge, the resolve to make India a developed nation, and asked the youth to visualise themselves over the next few decades as they would be the primary drivers of this transformation. 'This commitment can only be realised if we also embrace the remaining four pledges with equal seriousness.' He said the second pledge is to shed the colonial mindset. Goyal referred to India's rich history as a global economic powerhouse. He said centuries of foreign subjugation eroded confidence and imposed limitations. 'We must not be bound by the constraints of the past but instead aspire to meet global benchmarks and set ambitious goals.' He said the third pledge is to take pride in India's heritage. 'India's history, culture, traditions, and value systems hold deep significance as we move towards becoming a developed nation. Vikas bhi, virasat bhi. We must pursue development while preserving our heritage. Our diversity is our strength, and we must amalgamate our traditions into a collective journey towards progress,' he said. He referred to the fourth pledge and said the unity and integrity of the nation must be paramount. Goyal commended IIMUN for its efforts to engage youth from across India and abroad. He said unity is India's greatest strength and must be nurtured at every level. Goyal added that this collective spirit is fundamental to the country's journey towards becoming a developed nation. He cited the fifth pledge and spoke about the collective resolve of 1.4 billion Indians to contribute to nation-building. Goyal emphasised that a developed India can only emerge when all citizens work together like a family, with shared responsibility and compassion. 'We must be concerned for the marginalised, care for the underprivileged, and ensure that our progress is inclusive and sustainable.' Goyal encouraged the youth to accept nation-building as a duty and a privilege, and to perform every task with commitment and dedication. He urged them to inculcate care and concern for others and give their best to whatever job they undertake. He paid tribute to the role of teachers and mentors and said their contributions are often taken for granted during school and college years. Goyal added that they play a vital role in shaping the future of individuals and the nation. He described this bond as one of the most valuable and lasting relationships in life.

Use local languages in govt work: Amit Shah
NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah Thursday said govt is committed to ensure that India's diverse languages become a powerful medium to connect people, unlike in the past few decades, when efforts, though unsuccessful, were focused on making language a tool to break the country. Addressing Golden Jubilee celebrations of the department of official language, Shah insisted that governance must be conducted in local languages for the country to move forward with self-respect, based on its culture. Mentioning the resolve to break free from slavery mindset - one of the 'Panch Pran' given by PM Narendra Modi - Shah said it can only be fulfilled only if a person takes pride in his own language and develops an ability to express, think, analyse and make decisions in that language. "Indian languages should be used as much as possible in govt work, not only in Centre but also in state govts," he said. Shah said that "our roots, traditions, history, identity and cultural way of life cannot progress if disconnected from language". Efforts to promote and preserve all Indian languages, including Hindi, would be made in the coming days, he said. "Hindi is a friend of all languages and together, Hindi and other Indian languages enhance our self-pride," he said while adding that there should not be any opposition to foreign language either. "No state can ever become great by neglecting its mother tongue and Modi govt has made many efforts to honour and dignify its languages," he said. Shah said that Indian languages are getting an unprecedented boost in the field of technology, education and administration, and asked all state govts to take the initiative to impart medical and engineering education in local languages. "New Education Policy2020 lays emphasis on teaching mother tongue and local language up to Class 5, and 8. 95% of applicants for post of constable in central armed police forces are now taking the examination in their mother tongue," he said. Shah said as part of Bhasha Sangam, a programme is being run in every school to teach students 100 commonly used sentences in 22 languages recognised by the Constitution. He hailed Hindi Shabdsindhu initiative by the department, saying it would make the official language more accepted, flexible and comprehensive by enriching it with commonly spoken works, regardless of their origin.

Amit Shah advocates for promotion of Indian languages in governance to foster national unity
NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the govt was committed to ensure that its diverse languages become a powerful medium to connect people, unlike the past few decades when efforts, though unsuccessful, were focused on making language a tool to break the country. Addressing the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the department of official language here, Shah insisted that governance must be conducted in local languages for the country to move forward with self-respect, based on its culture. Mentioning the resolve to break free from the slavery mindset — one of the 'Panch Pran' given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — Shah said it can only be fulfilled only if a person takes pride in his own language and develops an ability to express, think, analyse and make decisions in that language. 'Indian languages should be used as much as possible in government work, not only in the Central government but also in the state governments. For this, we will also help the state governments, encourage them and try to convince them,' he said. Stating that 'our roots, traditions, history, identity and cultural way of life cannot progress if disconnected from language,' the home minister said efforts to promote and preserve all Indian languages, including Hindi, would be made in the coming days. 'Hindi is a friend of all languages and together, Hindi and other Indian languages enhance our self-pride,' he said while adding that there should not be any opposition to foreign language either. 'No state can ever become great by neglecting its mother tongue and the Modi govt has made many efforts to honour and dignify its languages,' he said while mentioning the recognition of Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali as classical languages. Shah said Indian languages are getting an unprecedented boost in the field of technology, education and administration and asked all state governments to take the initiative to impart medical and engineering education in local language. 'New Education Policy-2020 lays emphasis on teaching mother-tongue and local language up to Class 5 and 8. 95% of the applicants for post of constable in Central armed police forces are now taking the examination in their mother tongue,' he shared. Shah said that the Modi govt, over the past 11 years, has launched events like Kashi-Tamil Sangamam, Kashi-Telugu Sangamam, Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam, Shashwat Mithila Mahotsav and Bhasha Sangam under the 'Ek Bharat, Shreshta Bharat' program. He said that as part of Bhasha Sangam, a program is being run in every school to teach students 100 commonly used sentences in the 22 languages recognised by the Constitution. He hailed the 'Hindi Shabdsindhu' initiative by the department of official language, saying that it would make the official language more accepted, flexible and comprehensive by enriching it with commonly spoken works, regardless of their origin. Also appreciating the establishment of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag - which enables translation of official files from Hindi to other official languages and vice versa — the home minister said it would assist in seamless coordination and communication between the Centre and states.
