Woman loses gold ornaments during train journey
Udupi: A senior citizen claimed to have lost gold jewellery weighing 170.4g, valued at Rs 16.7 lakh, along with Rs 3,000 in cash during a train journey from Bengaluru. In a complaint, Radhika,66, a resident of Yelahanka New Town, Bengaluru, stated that on May 22, she boarded the 16595 Panchaganga Express from Platform No. 3 at Yeshwanthpur Railway Station at 7.04pm, along with her brother Hariprasad, to travel to Udupi. Radhika occupied Seat No. 1 (lower berth) in coach A-1, while her brother sat on the opposite seat, ate dinner, and spoke on the phone about attending a wedding. He later moved to Seat No. 45 in the same coach. Between 9.30pm and 10pm, Radhika placed her green bag, which contained a purse with gold ornaments and an envelope of cash, next to her head and went to sleep. When she woke up around 4.25am, the purse was missing, with only empty covers remaining inside. At that point, the train passed Mulki railway station and was about 8km from Udupi railway station. The complaint was initially filed in Bengaluru after the complainant returned, and was later transferred to Kaup police station on technical grounds, as the alleged theft occurred near Udupi. Kaup police are investigating the case.

Passengers irked with delays in Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express after augmentation
South Western Railways' move to add five more coaches to the Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express has resulted in a delay of about an hour in the train's arrival at Bengaluru and Karwar since June 13. While the Panchaganga Express (train no. 16596) is scheduled to arrive at Yeshwanthpur at 6.43 a.m., it arrived late by 47 minutes, 1.34 hours, 1.10 hours, and 1.08 hours on June 13, 14, 15, and 16, respectively, according to Prathvi Kunder, a patron from Kundapura. The train's average delay for the last seven days was 41 minutes at Yeshwanthpur and 27 minutes at KSR Bengaluru, according to the National Train Enquiry System (NTES). Similarly, the train arrived late by 9 minutes, 13 minutes, 2.06 hours, and 1 hour at Karwar on these dates, against the scheduled arrival of 8.25 a.m., he told The Hindu. The average delay in the last week at Karwar was 7 minutes, according to the NTES. Office-goers affected The delayed arrival, particularly at Bengaluru, has affected regular office-going commuters, said Gautam Shetty, a member of Kundapura Railway Prayanikara Samithi. He said the office-goers had to take a half-day leave because of the delay. The timings of Panchaganga Express, which left Karwar at 6.00 p.m. and reached Yeshwanthpur at 6.43 a.m. and KSR Bengaluru at 7.15 a.m., were the reason the service became a big hit. After 7:00 a.m., the Yeshwanthpur-KSR Bengaluru section becomes highly congested with the arrival of many trains from far-off places, including North Karnataka, resulting in delays to the Panchaganga Express, he said. Crossing at Subrahmanya Road Train no. 16595 and train no. 16596 crossed each other at Siribagilu on the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road Ghat section when they had 14 coaches each. After adding five more coaches to compensate for the cancelled day trains in the section, the two trains were made to cross at Subrahmanya Road Station due to constraints at Siribagilu. The Bengaluru service was not designed to compensate for the delay between Hassan and Chikkabanavara, resulting in the delay, Mr. Shetty said. Members of Parliament from the coastal region had urged SWR to ensure the punctuality of services before adding more coaches, patrons noted.

SWR adds 5 coaches to Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express temporarily
The South Western Railway (SWR) has decided to augment Train No. 16595/596 KSR Bengaluru-Karwar Panchaganga Express with five additional coaches on temporary basis to fill the void resulting from cancellation of day train services on the sector for five months. Panchaganga Express runs with 14 LHB coaches — one first AC-cum-2-tier AC, one 2-tier AC, one 3-tier AC, seven sleeper class, two general second class, one luggage-cum-brake van and one generator car coaches. The SWR will add two 3-tier AC Economy, two general second class and one sleeper class coaches with effect from June 11 from Bengaluru-end, and from June 12 from Karwar-end, taking the total to 19 coaches. This decision comes in the backdrop of Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary and Kumta MLA Dinakar Shetty demanding an additional overnight service between Karwar and Bengaluru during the time the day rains remain cancelled. SWR had cancelled Train Nos. 16575/576 and 16539/540 Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction tri weekly Gomateshwara Express and weekly, and Train No. 16515/516 Yeshwantpur-Karwar tri-weekly express services for 154 days from May 31 to facilitate electrification work on the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road ghat section. Passenger associations of Kundapura and Uttara Kannada have said that SWR responded to their demand for adding more coaches to the Panchaganga without affecting the timetable. Coach augmentation would result in addition of about 400 seats, they said. Augmentation of coaches should not affect punctuality Stating that the tight timetable, leaving Bengaluru at 6.50 p.m. to reach Karwar at 8.25 a.m. and leaving Karwar at 6 p.m. to reach Bengaluru at 7 a.m., was the reason for the Panchaganga Express becoming the most-sought-after service in the coast, passenger associations have urged the Railways to ensure the timetable is not affected by augmentation of coaches. The crossing of Trains 16595/596 after coach augmentation would happen at Subrahmanya Road station because Siribagilu station on the ghat section where the trains cross at present, cannot accommodate trains with more than 15 coaches. The patrons do not want the change in crossing to delay the Karwar-Bengaluru trains reaching their destination. Similarly, patrons of Dakshina Kannada have demanded that the changed crossing should not affect the running of KSR Bengaluru-Kannur (Train 16511) overnight express. G. Karthik Kamath, a patron, said the SWR should augment coaches on Trains 16585/586 SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru and 16511/512 KSR Bengaluru-Kannur too to offset the cancellation of day trains.
