Telangana achieves 70% of MNREGS target in two months

HYDERABAD: Telangana is rapidly implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), having generated 4.53 crore person-days of employment by the end of May this financial year. This is against the 6.5 crore person-days allocated to the state by the Central government. With this, the state has already achieved 70 per cent of its target within two months, spending Rs 1,416 crore, including Rs 1,151.67 crore towards wages and Rs 191.03 crore on material purchases. The government is providing Rs 307 as the daily wage for each worker, as notified by the Centre. According to officials, the state government is ensuring timely payment of wages, even though the release of funds by the Central government is delayed in some instances. So far in 2025–26, the Telangana government has provided employment to 28.48 lakh individuals from 18.9 lakh households. On average, each household has received 24 days of work over these two months, with 1,127 households completing 100 days of work. As part of the employment guarantee scheme in rural areas, the government is prioritising works related to agriculture and allied sectors, achieving 50 per cent of its 60 per cent target for these areas. Under this initiative, over one lakh farm ponds, cattle and goat sheds, and plantation works are being undertaken, along with the construction of 31,000 Anganwadi buildings and CC roads. Meanwhile, as demand for MNREGS works increases, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya has written to the Centre, urging it to increase the person-days allocation to 12 crore. She has also sought an appointment with the Union Minister for Panchayat Raj and Urban Development to discuss the issue.

Did not announce Telangana local body poll dates, says Panchayat Raj Min Seethakka

HYDERABAD: Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister D Anasuya, popularly known as Seethakka, clarified that no date has been announced for local body elections. She said the election process will begin only after a Cabinet discussion. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad, she said: 'I only mentioned that elections will be held soon. Some are falsely claiming I announced the poll dates.' She added that the delay is due to the state's efforts to secure 42% reservations for BCs, which is still pending with the Centre. 'We will discuss how to implement 42% BC reservations in the upcoming elections. Only the Congress is committed to ensuring social justice,' she said. Feud between siblings On the political front, she alleged that BRS working president KT Rama Rao seems eager to go to jail. 'He is provoking the chief minister to arrest him. Investigative agencies will handle the matter,' she said, adding that there appears to be a rivalry between Rama Rao and his sister, MLC K Kavitha, within the BRS.

Construction of 50,000 farm ponds completed

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh's ambitious project to construct 1.55 lakh farm ponds has reached a significant milestone, with 50,000 ponds now completed. The districts of Alluri Sitarama Raju (7,566), Parvathipuram Manyam (6,317), and Annamayya (5,181) lead the charge, securing the top three positions in completion rating. Commissioner of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development VR Krishna Teja Mylavarapu highlighted the multifaceted benefits of farm ponds for farmers, calling them a 'crop lifeline.' He stated that these ponds enable farmers to cultivate long-term income-generating plants like papaya, banana, guava, and curry leaves. The stored water can also be utilised for spraying pesticides and even for pisciculture. Furthermore, he noted that constructing a farm pond in fields with borewells can increase groundwater levels, allowing farmers to cultivate larger areas. Additional income and cost savings for farmers With the onset of the monsoon season, the Commissioner urged farmers to leverage the opportunity to grow leafy greens and vegetables on the earthen bunds around the farm ponds, thereby generating additional income. He also announced that the cost of seeds for these vegetables would be included in the work estimates and reimbursed to farmers through MGNREGA funds. The Commissioner emphasised that the construction of farm ponds under the MGNREGA scheme is free of charge, saving farmers up to Rs 50,000. He encouraged every farmer to overcome any hesitation about losing land area and embrace these multi-purpose farm ponds to reap the numerous benefits. He further detailed the impressive water conservation capacity of these ponds, stating that each farm pond can store 1.8 lakh litres of rainwater from a single rainfall event. Collectively, the 1.55 lakh farm ponds have the potential to store approximately one TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of rainwater at once.
