Injury puts Pandelela's individual event hopes in doubt

KUALA LUMPUR: It remains unknown whether two-time Olympic medallist Pandelela Rinong can compete in the women's 10m platform individual diving event at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore tomorrow (July 30). Pandelela and partner Lee Yiat Qing were forced to withdraw from the women's 10m platform synchronised event preliminaries after just two dives yesterday (July 28) due to an injury suffered by Pandelela. Malaysia Aquatics diving technical director Yeoh Ken Nee said Pandelela's condition will be assessed prior to the individual event. "Unfortunately, Pandelela injured her shoulder during the warm-up for the competition today (July 28)," said Ken Nee last night. "We will have to wait and see how her shoulder is before we decide if she is able to continue and compete in the individual event on July 30th (tomorrow). "At the moment we are leaving it to the physio (to treat her)." It is understood that Pandelela had injured her shoulder last month but had been able to manage the injury through physiotherapy. The 32-year-old, however, tweaked her shoulder again during the warm-up for the 10m platform synchronised event yesterday. Pandelela had competed alongside Yiat Qing, Elvis Clement and Enrique Harold in the mixed 3m and 10m team event on Saturday (July 26), finishing 16th from 21 teams. Ken Nee said he was pleased with the performances of the younger divers in the squad. "Our young divers have done their best in this World Championships. They are still gaining experience so results-wise, we have to be patient," said Ken Nee. Elvis-Enrique will take to the pool for the men's 10m platform synchronised event later today.

Injury ripple hits Malaysia's aquatic hopes

Malaysian Pandelela Rinong competes in Women's 10 meter Platform semi final at Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio De Janeiro,Brazil .t AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star (18/8/2016) PETALING JAYA: It was a tough day for Malaysia at the World Championships in Singapore, as Olympic divers Pandelela Rinong and Phee Jinq En were forced to withdraw from their respective pet events. Two-time Olympic medallist Pandelela's old injury flared up just before she was due to compete in the women's 10m platform synchro preliminary event in the afternoon. As a result, the Sarawak-born diver had to pull out of the event with partner Lee Yiat Qing. Pandelela has won a total of five medals in previous appearances in this event at the world meet. The 10m platform synchro is also the same event where Pandelela picked up a historic Olympic silver medal with Cheong Jun Hoong in the 2016 edition in Rio de Janeiro. But that was in the past and Pandelela certainly missed a good opportunity to check out where she stands with her new partnership with the younger Yiat Qing. Pandelela put up a quick update on her social media account on her withdrawal from the 10m platform synchro event later. "Earlier this month, I injured my left shoulder but still manageable under physiotherapy. "Today during warming up, the shoulder injury got triggered again when executing one of the high difficulty dives just before the event.

Hoe Yean clocks season's best at World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean bounced back strong after battling jet lag on the opening day but injuries hampered other senior Malaysian athletes at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore today (July 28). Hoe Yean clocked a season's best one minute and 48.10 seconds to place 31st overall from 59 swimmers in the men's 200 metre freestyle preliminaries, bettering the 1:48.68s he clocked at the World University Games in Berlin earlier this month. The time, however, was not enough to see him make the top-16 cut for the semi-finals at the OCBC Aquatics Centre. Welson Sim's 1:47.36s from 2017 remains the Malaysian national record in the event. A travel-fatigued Hoe Yean, who arrived in Singapore from Berlin late on Saturday, placed 28th in the 400m freestyle preliminaries yesterday on 3:51.11s which was some way off the 3:47.38s (national record) he clocked en route to silver at WUG. Phee Jinq En opted to sit out the women's 100m breaststroke event today due to a hip issue. She is scheduled to compete in the 50m breaststroke on Sunday (Aug 2). Malaysia Aquatics secretary-general Andy Low said: "She has a slight injury but is preparing for her favourite 50m (breastrstroke) event later this week," said Andy when contacted today. In diving, Nurqayyum Nazim-Yong Rui Jie settled for 21st from 26 pairs in the men's 3m springboard synchronised preliminaries. The duo's routines scored 44.40, 42.00, 57.60, 66.96, 56.10 and 35.70 for a 302.76 total. Only the top-eight pairs made the cut for the final. Luck was not on Pandelela Rinong-Lee Yiat Qing's side in the women's 10m platform synchronised as they were forced to withdraw after scoring 43.80 and 43.20 in the first two dives due to an injury sustained by Pandelela. It is understood that Pandelela had tweaked her shoulder and withdrew as a precautionary measure. The 32-year-old is scheduled to compete in the 10m platform individual event on Wednesday. Pandelela, Yiat Qing, Elvis Clement and Enrique Harold had competed in the mixed 3m and 10m team event on Saturday, finishing 16th from 21 teams. Hoe Yean will next compete in the men's 800m freestyle while Andrew Goh will see action in the men's 50m breaststroke tomorrow. Elvis-Enrique will take to the pool for the men's 10m platform synchronised event tomorrow.

Malaysia divers use Singapore platform for Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: For the Malaysia diving team, the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore from July 26-Aug 3 is less about medals and more about preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The focus of the national association, Malaysia Aquatics (MAS), is on developing new pairings and long-term strategies. It also serves as a build-up for the Bangkok SEA Games in December. At the world meet, Malaysia will depend on two new pairings — the men's synchro 10m platform duo of Enrique Harold Maccartney and Elvis Priestly Clement, and the women's synchro of veteran Pandelela Rinong and newcomer Lee Yiat Qing. In the men's competition, MAS diving technical director Yeoh Ken Nee, however, is managing expectations despite an impressive showing at the national trials in May. "Even though they broke the 400-point barrier, that was during a national trial. We have to consider the judging of international judges," said Ken Nee. "This is their first time pairing at this level, so we'll observe how they perform at the World Championships." This approach also applies to the women's 10m synchro pairing, which brings together veteran Pandelela and debutante Yiat Qing. MAS' main goal is to assess their partnership and competitiveness against the sport's elite. However, expectations shift when it comes to Pandelela's individual event. As a two-time Olympic medallist, her targets are results-driven. "For a diver like Pandelela, we have expectations. Her KPI is essentially to make the final at least." MAS' dual-approach is to foster a pressure-free environment for emerging partnerships while maintaining high standards for its established stars. "We don't yet know if these new pairs can be consistent at international level. For now, it's all about evaluating where they stand. Ultimately, success for Malaysia's diving team in Singapore will not be measured by podium finishes, but by the insights it offers into the nation's long-term Olympic programme — for both its new talents and its seasoned campaigners. MALAYSIA'S DIVING SQUAD MEN: Syafiq Puteh (3m springboard individual), Enrique Harold Maccartney (10m platform individual and synchro), Elvis Priestly Clement (10m platform individual and synchro), Nurqayyum Nazmi Nazim (1m springboard, 3m springboard synchro), Yong Rui Jie (1m springboard, 3m springboard synchro). Pandelela Rinong (10m platform synchro and individual), Lee Yiat Qing (10m platform synchro and individual).

Veteran Pandelela gets rookie partner for World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: The new combination of veteran diver Pandelela Rinong and Sea Games champion Lee Yiat Qing will carry Malaysia's hopes in the women's 10m synchronised platform at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore from July 11-Aug 3. Two-time Olympic medallist Pandelela seems to have made a full recovery from a tricep muscle injury at the World Cup in Canada in April. Malaysia Aquatics (MAS) diving technical director Yeoh Ken Nee said they expect the Podium Programme athletes to reach the finals and the back-up athletes to gain experience and build momentum for the Thailand Sea Games in December. "Our hopes were on Pandelela before and now too in the 10m synchronised platform. She will be having a new partner who is a first timer competing in the World Championships. Yiat Qing has won gold in the Sea Games, they are our hopes," said Ken Nee in a press conference at the National Aquatic Centre today. "We want at least a big tournament (World Championships) for them to feel the pressure. So when they go to Sea Games, at least the level and pressure is slightly lower." Malaysia will also be sending five male divers to the world meet, with the target of reaching at least the final in every event. Enrique Harold Maccartney and Elvis Priestly will compete in the men's 10m platform synchro while Syafiq Puteh will feature in the springboard events. Two young divers, Nurqayyum Nazmi Nazim and Yong Rui Jie, have also been named for the springboard events, though the final selection for the 1m and 3m events has yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile MAS announced that its president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, deputy president Marilyn Chua, vice president Anthony Ang Kang Keam and assistant secretary Nurul Huda Abdullah, have retained their posts unopposed ahead of the national association's AGM on June 28.
