Annual show inspires gardeners
THE Kloof Conservancy Indigenous Open Gardens showcase the beauty and importance of indigenous gardening as well as gardening in general. The annual show also helps inspire residents to find new ideas for their gardens.
The show on the weekend of June 21/22 was again a huge success with just under 3000 entries to the gardens, with many visitors visiting multiple gardens.
More than 50 volunteers helped make the event run smoothly, which enabled visitors to enjoy the hard work done by the six gardeners who lovingly and generously prepared their gardens for the visitors.

'The show is also an important fundraiser for the Kloof Conservancy as it enables the conservancy to run many of its environmental projects. The funds raised at this year's show have been earmarked to support three major projects currently in progress,' said Kloof Conservancy chairman Paolo Candotti.
One project that the conservancy is working on is the Mend-the-Molweni project which is making progress in reducing sewage spillages in the streets of Hillcrest and thus reducing pollution into the Molweni River.
'We are also working on The Ingwe Escarpment Project which aims, in partnership with eThekwini Municipality, to create a new proclaimed nature reserve on the southern Kloof Escarpment.
'The third one is the Molweni Eco-club Project which is run in partnership with FreeMe Wildlife which currently has 100 children from five primary schools in Molweni participating in environmental education activities,' said Candotti.
He added that another highly successful activity at the Open Gardens was the Nature Facts Treasure Hunt.
Children were encouraged to look for clues in the gardens to complete an environmentally meaningful sentence and once they returned the completed form they were given a 'kit' to complete/build something at home such as an insect hotel or a water filter.
The Kloof Conservancy extended its thanks to all the gardeners, volunteers and visitors.
