Win big, earn big: Delhi rolls out record rewards for medal winners
The Delhi government on Tuesday announced a policy to boost sports in the Capital, approving substantial cash rewards and government jobs for medal-winning athletes at the international and national levels. Under the newly approved 'Mukhyamantri Khel Protsahan Yojana' (Chief Minister Sports Promotion Scheme), athletes from Delhi who win medals at events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games (CWG), and Paralympic tournaments will not only receive the highest cash prizes among Indian States but also be eligible for direct recruitment to government jobs in Grade A, B, or C categories, depending on the level of achievement. Delhi Sports Minister Ashish Sood, announcing the decision, said the policy is designed to promote sporting excellence, provide long-term career security to athletes, and retain home-grown talent in the city. 'Delhi now offers the highest financial recognition to medal winners,' Mr. Sood said, adding that the move was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Khelo India' and 'Fit India' campaigns. Mr. Sood said Olympic gold and silver medallists, along with Asian Games gold winners, will qualify for Grade A posts in the Delhi government. Those securing Olympic bronze, Asian Games silver and bronze, CWG gold and silver, and gold in Paralympic and Para Asian Games will be eligible for Grade B posts. All remaining medallists from the CWG, Para CWG, and Para Asian Games will be offered Grade C roles, he added. In addition, the policy also includes financial support for training and travel. State and national-level athletes will be eligible for training support of up to ₹5 lakh, with equal coverage for medical insurance. Elite athletes may receive up to ₹20 lakh in assistance, with ₹10 lakh in health coverage. Athletes competing in events recognised by the International Olympic Committee and its affiliates will be entitled to up to ₹2 lakh to cover travel, stay, meals, and tournament registration.

Promising government jobs to athletes who bring laurels to the nation, the Delhi government on Tuesday announced a significant hike in cash awards for medal winners, with rewards for Olympic and Paralympic gold medallists being increased to Rs 7 crore from the current Rs 3 crore. To bridge the disparity between Delhi and other states in supporting athletes, the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Gupta, approved a revision of the cash incentives under the newly-launched Mukhyamantri Khel Protsahan Yojana, Transport Minister Ashish Sood told mediapersons. While Olympic and Paralympic Games silver medallists will receive Rs 5 crore, bronze medallists will get Rs 3 crore. Similarly, Asian and Para Asian Games gold medallists will be given Rs 3 crore, while silver medallists will get Rs 2 crore and bronze medallists Rs 1 crore. Also, while athletes representing Delhi nationally or internationally will receive an annual financial support of Rs 20 lakh, a support of Rs 5 lakh each was announced for students of classes 6 to 12 who perform at the national or state levels. Further, the Cabinet approved a government job reservation structure for medal winners. 'These decisions mark a new era for Delhi's youth… Whether it's standing tall on the Olympic podium or excelling in the classroom, the government is committed to giving every child the resources and recognition they deserve,' said Sood. Targeting the education sector, the Cabinet cleared the Mukhyamantri Digital Education Scheme to award free laptops. 'As many as 1,200 meritorious students of Class 10 will be awarded free high-performance laptops with i7 configuration. The total budget outlay is Rs 8 crore,' Sood said. Further, the government approved the establishment of 175 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) labs in government schools, each with 40 computers. Underlining the need for ICT infrastructure in schools, Sood said, 'Not a single functional ICT lab currently exists across Delhi's 1,074 government schools.' The new labs will be built according to CBSE-approved standards and aim to bridge a long-standing infrastructure gap, he added.

Teen changemaker tackles nutrition gaps with a local superfood
What began as a personal setback for 16-year-old Vivaan Vasudeva, a student at The Shri Ram School, Moulsari, has evolved into a purpose-driven mission. During the pandemic, Vivaan was forced off the football field. He gained weight and struggled with his performance once sports resumed. Determined to turn things around, he studied sports nutrition through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, lost 18kg, and made a comeback — this time playing football at the state level. That transformation became the spark for something bigger. While his younger sister, 13-year-old Samaira Vasudeva, trained alongside para-athletes, Vivaan observed the immense talent of these athletes — but also noticed a glaring gap: limited access to proper nutrition. In response, he launched NutriAssist, an initiative offering personalised, affordable meal plans for athletes from modest backgrounds. In just over a year, three athletes he worked with went on to represent India at the Para Asian Games. 'When these athletes went on to win medals for our country, I knew this solution needed to be scaled,' he says. One of the biggest challenges was ensuring adequate protein intake on a limited budget — which led to the creation of SattuFusion, a nutrient-dense vegan blend built around sattu, a local superfood. Vivaan says, 'Being a changemaker starts with spotting a problem that tugs at you so hard, you can't ignore it. For me, it was protein-energy malnutrition. I grew up on sattu — a humble roasted Bengal gram flour packed with protein — and I thought: why can't this age-old staple be reimagined for today? That question lit the fuse for SattuFusion and gave this project its spine — purpose.' Today, SattuFusion — a pediatric-safe, chemical-free supplement — is being provided to children undergoing chemotherapy at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute. Tailored for underprivileged families, it helps maintain critical weight and muscle mass during cancer treatment. Through a partnership with The Bigger Picture NGO, SattuFusion is now part of two cloud kitchens that serve over 200 fortified meals daily to undernourished children across Delhi-NCR. Proceeds from its sales on Amazon help fund the initiative — creating a full-circle model of impact
