Balaramapuram road widening: Compensation disbursement to landowners likely this month
Thiruvananthapuram: Disbursement of compensation to 52 landowners affected by Kodinada-Vazhimukku road widening project is finally expected to commence this month after the district collector's office submits the finalised beneficiary list. Though state govt approved the package weeks ago, procedural delays in compiling the final list stalled the release of funds by the finance department. Parassala MLA C K Hareendran, overseeing the land acquisition, expressed confidence that the delay would be resolved swiftly. "There will not be any more delay. It's true there was some delay in handing over the list. The district collector is in New Delhi now. Once she returns, the list will be handed over and the compensation will be released," he said. The Rs 104-crore compensation, sanctioned by KIIFB, covers land acquisition and structure valuation. This is besides Rs 102.4 crore approved in June, raising the total compensation pool to approximately Rs 200 crore, including Rs 160 crore for land and Rs 40 crore for structures. Land acquisition efforts remained active despite the delay. Demolition along the 1.5 km stretch from Vazhimukku to Balaramapuram had begun earlier and was conducted by a Kunjalumoodu-based contractor under KRFB oversight. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The initial delay was mainly due to financial clearances and technicalities in verifying landowner documentation. Once the beneficiary list is submitted, the finance department will transfer funds to the district collector, who will redirect it to the special tahsildar, triggering direct bank transfers to landowners shortly thereafter. Following fund release, public works department will issue tenders by Sept with construction set to begin in Oct, said Hareendran. The expanded road, widened to 30.2m, aims to ease chronic traffic congestion on the NH-66 corridor and better connect Parassala and Neyyattinkara to Thiruvananthapuram. The removal of plans for an underpass at Balaramapuram Junction, due to local opposition, pivoted focus to utilising govt land along a 300m stretch near Thaikkappalli mosque, reducing private land requirements.

Two arrested in murder of hotel owner
The Museum police have recorded the arrests of two people, including a Nepalese, in connection with the death of a hotel owner in the city on Tuesday. The accused have been identified as Adimalathura native Rajesh and David of Nepal. They have reportedly confessed to have murdered the deceased, Justin Raj, after he dismissed them from their jobs at the hotel. The businessman was found murdered in a rented house in Edapazhinji where the accused were staying. Justin, who co-owned a hotel in Vazhuthacaud, employed eight workers, including the accused duo. Both had been irregular in attending work, prompting the victim to terminate their services, the police said. Confrontation escalated The confrontation escalated after Justin visited the house to speak with the workers. It is alleged that Rajesh attacked him first, causing him to fall, after which both suspects assaulted him and ultimately strangled him to death. Justin, who was also involved in real estate and construction sectors, was reported missing after he failed to return from a site visit. His friend, Stanley, later approached the police after several failed attempts to contact him. The police tracked David's mobile phone, which led them to Rajesh. Subsequently, the police located the suspects from Adimalathura, where they allegedly resisted arrest while in a drunken state. Four police officers were injured during the confrontation. Justin was the son-in-law of late Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former Parassala MLA M. Sathyanesan.

New bridge to connect Amboori's high ranges
Thiruvananthapuram : The Kumbichalkadavu Bridge in Amboori, the state's longest multi-span river bridge, will be inaugurated in July by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Built over the Karippayar River with seven spans, the bridge was completed at a cost of Rs 24.71 crore, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). This major infrastructure project connects the remote southern high ranges of Amboori with urban centres, ending decades of isolation for rural and tribal communities. Once open, it will directly benefit over 1,000 tribal families across 11 settlements in Thodumala, including Karikkuzhi, Chakkappara, Sankumkonam, Kaipanplavila, Thenmala, and Kunnathumala. Parassala MLA C K Hareendran confirmed that the inauguration will take place before July 25, once finishing touches are completed. "The exact date is yet to be fixed," he said. Hareendran added that the bridge addresses a long-standing demand of around 2,800 residents in the area, who previously relied on unsafe country boats and rafts to cross the river. In addition to the bridge, a network of 16 connecting roads, both major and minor, is under construction at a cost of Rs 7.99 crore. These routes will extend through Chakkappara and Kunnathmala, further improving accessibility and integrating the bridge into the local infrastructure. The bridge is also being positioned as a tourism getaway, complementing attractions like the Neyyar dam, Agasthyarkoodam trekking base, and the Meenmutty waterfalls.

Landowners to receive compensation next week
T'puram: After years of delay, the pending compensation for landowners who surrendered their property for Kodinada-Vazhimukku stretch of Karamana-Kaliyikkavila Road development project is finally set to be disbursed. As many as 52 landowners are expected to receive their dues by next week. Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) approved a compensation package of Rs 104 crore, paving way for the next phase of the road development. The disbursal comes after sustained pressure from locals, public representatives and a renewed push by govt to expedite stalled infrastructure projects. Confirming the development, Parassala MLA C K Hareendran said govt assured that compensation process will be completed without further delay. "I received a clear assurance from the state govt that the compensation amount will be disbursed next week," Hareendran said. "The KIIFB already sanctioned the amount and all procedural steps have been completed. This is a major relief for the landowners," he added. The 1.5km Kodinada to Vazhimukku stretch is a critical segment of the wider Karamana-Kaliyikkavila road development project, which aims to improve connectivity in southern region of the city and decongest the busy NH-66 corridor. With the compensation issue nearing resolution, govt is preparing to float the construction tender for this stretch in July. Officials said the groundwork for tendering has already begun and once compensation reaches the landowners, PWD will initiate the formal process. Karamana-Kaliyikkavila project saw multiple delays since its announcement, mainly due to land acquisition hurdles and fund disbursal bottlenecks. Despite the delay in compensation, demolition work already commenced along the project stretch, starting from Vazhimukku towards Balaramapuram. A contractor based in Kunjalumoodu is currently handling the demolition, with buildings being razed at both the Balaramapuram and Kodinada ends.

The ranking will help identify the deficits in each panchayat and on the basis of it, measures will be taken to plan a course of action for each year."We expected a much better rank as we were excellent in implementing all the projects. We could provide 100% electricity connections and toilet facilities in all the households. Since our panchayat is small, our own fund is meagre and implementation of projects depends fully on state funds. There was a delay in releasing funds for various projects and it affects implementation. If the govt grants funds on time, we can improve our rankings next time," said Vellanad panchayat president K S Rajalakshmi. Parassala panchayat president Manju Smitha L also expressed her happiness over the ranking and promised to take more efforts to advance the an officer of the economics and statistics department opined that despite being an advanced state, only two panchayats could secure spots in the first 100 ranks. "In Kerala, a panchayat is formed of two or more villages, unlike the other states which have just a village in one panchayat. In the Yes/No questionnaire for the survey, there are questions on how many post offices are there in the village, how many railway stations, Jan Aushadhis, public toilets, etc. In most of the panchayats, there will be only one such facility, but to the questions to other villagers, the answers could be No. This led to the decline in points earned and none of our panchayats got placed in the first 50 rankings," the officer question carries two points and there are 50 such questions in the questionnaire.
