Ready to pay profit share to complainant: Soubin
Kochi: Actor Soubin Shahir was questioned by Maradu Police for the second consecutive day on Tuesday in connection with a financial cheating case. The case pertains to a complaint filed by Alappuzha-based businessman Siraj Valiyaveettil who alleged that the actor and his partners did not pay him the principal amount and profit share for the money invested in the production of the hit Malayalam movie 'Manjummel Boys'. The police quizzed Soubin along with his father Babu Shahir and producer Shawn Antony. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, when Soubin arrived at the Maradu Police station, he told reporters that they were willing to provide the profit share to the complainant and that the complainant approached the court while the accounts were still being reviewed. Soubin said that the matter should now be settled legally. "We have already paid the principal amount. We are currently reviewing the remaining accounts. If what they claim is correct, we are ready to pay. However, the figures they present are not accurate. The profit has been set aside. Since they have approached the court, let them decide now. We have the records and are ready to cooperate with everyone," said Soubin. Soubin Shahir granted anticipatory bail in 'Manjummel Boys' financial fraud case
Actor Soubin Shahir was arrested in Kochi, allegedly in a financial fraud case related to the film Manjummel Boys. The court has granted anticipatory bail, and he will be released after recording his arrest, the Kochi police said. The police had registered a case against actor-producer Shahir and Shawn Antony, a producer, on a complaint by Siraj Valiathara Hameed that they had not paid him the share of the profit made from the movie, despite his contribution of Rs 7 crore towards its production. Hameed, in his complaint, had mentioned that the producer duo did not even pay him his share of investment for making the movie and that they transferred the profits to their own accounts. This was a violation of the investment agreement he had executed with the producing company, as per the Kochi police. Earlier in 2024, after the success of Manjummel Boys, the Enforcement Directorate launched an investigation into alleged financial irregularities by Soubin's Parava Films. On the work front, Soubin started his film career as an assistant director in the industry with Siddique's Chronic Bachelor (2003). He is known for his works in Charlie (2015), Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), Kali (2016), Darvinte Parinamam (2016), Kammatipaadam (2016), Anuraga Karikkin Vellam (2016), Mayanadhi (2017), and Kumbalangi Nights. His first full lead role was in the film Sudani from Nigeria (2018) for which he won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. In 2024, he played the role of Siju David in Manjummel Boys. He also produced the movie.

Manjummel Boys actor-producer Soubin Shahir arrested on financial fraud charges, released on bail
Actor-producer Soubin Shahir has been arrested in the financial fraud case in connection with the film Manjummel Boys. His father Babu Shahir and his associate Shawn Antony were previously summoned for questioning, as per The Week, and were later arrested. The three of them were released on bail, which they got in anticipation from the High Court. Soubin Shahir's production house Parava Films has been under investigation ever since they were accused of embezzling Rs 7 crore. The police has claimed that a proper investigation must be held to account for the funds of the film. The police has also accused Soubin that he had pre-planned the fraud, even before the filming began. The accusations were first raised by Siraj Valiyaveettil as he claimed that he invested Rs 7 crore in Manjummel Boys. He claimed that he was informed that the film's total budget would be Rs 22 crore. He later got to know that the film was made within Rs 18.65 crore. He alleged that he did not receive the 40 percent profit that he was promised. As per Sacnilk, Manjummel made Rs 140 crore in India, and collected Rs 240 crore worldwide. The film was declared a hit and received a lot of praise from the audience. Until the release of L2: Empuraan, it remained the biggest hit of Malayalam cinema. Written and directed by Chidambaram, Manjummel Boys was based on an incident that took place at Guna Caves in 2006 when a man got stuck inside the cave, and his friends helped in his rescue operation. The film was applauded for its message of hope and resilience.

Manjummel Boys cheating case: arrests of Soubin and two others recorded, released on bail
The Maradu police on Tuesday recorded the arrest and then immediately let off actor-producer Soubin Shahir, his father, Babu Shahir and producer Shawn Antony, all partners of Parava Films, a limited liability partnership firm, in a case related to the alleged denial of the principal amount and profit share to an investor in the Malayalam blockbuster movie, Manjummel Boys, produced by the firm. All three turn up for interrogation at the Maradu police station for the second consecutive day following which their arrests were recorded. The Kerala High Court while dismissing their petitions seeking to quash the cheating and forgery case against them had directed that in the event of arrest, they should be released on bail. Emerging after the interrogation, Mr. Soubin Shahir claimed that his arrest was not recorded. He said that principal investment amount of the petitioner had already been returned and that the accounts were in place. He said that while they were willing to cooperate with arbitration and that it was the petitioner who had approached the court. He said that he had given all relevant documents to the police. It remains to be seen whether the police were satisfied about the documents and whether he would be summoned again. The police registered the case on April 23, 2024, on the direction of the Ernakulam First Class Magistrate Court after Siraj Valiyathara Hameed, alleged that he was denied 40% share of the profits as reportedly promised. Incidentally, by the producers' claim, Manjummel Boys had collected over ₹200 crore following its massive theatrical success, including in Tamil Nadu. According to the first information report (FIR), Parava Films offered the complainant a profit share of 40% if he invested in the production of the movie that entailed a cost of ₹22 crore. Subsequently, an agreement was reached between Mr. Antony and the complainant on November 30, 2022. Thereafter, the complainant initially transferred ₹5.99 crore to the account of Parava Films maintained with the Kadavanthra branch of a bank, followed by the transfer of another ₹50 lakh to the account of Mr. Antony. Besides, another ₹51 lakh was collected in cash over some time, thus collectively borrowing ₹7 crore. The principal amount, along with the promised profit share of ₹40 crore, was not paid, thus cheating the complainant collectively to the tune of ₹47 crore, the FIR said. The police have booked the accused under IPC Sections 120b (criminal conspiracy), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (forgery for cheating), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention).
