Najib's royal addendum: I've discussed with PM, but it's up to the King, says Zahid

KANGAR: The implementation of Datuk Seri Najib Razak's addendum decree for house arrest will be expedited but remains subject to the discretion of the King, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He added that due process must be respected, with the legal proceedings involving the addendum decree to go through the Pardons Board. "This step will still follow the legal process under the Pardons Board, which is currently chaired by the King. That is what must be respected in this ongoing process," he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Kangar Umno division delegates' meeting at a hotel here today. Also present were Kangar Umno division chief Datuk Dr Fathul Bari Mat Jahya, who is also Perlis Umno liaison deputy chairman; Perlis Umno liaison chairman Datuk Rozabil Abdul Rahman; and the heads of Kangar Umno's Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings. Zahid said he had met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss in detail the legal steps required to act on the decree. "Regarding the addendum decree, I have met with the prime minister and we've had detailed discussions on the legal process that must be followed. "God willing, follow-up action will be taken in accordance with legal procedures," he said. Najib, who has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, for misappropriating RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, filed a petition for a royal pardon on Sept 2, 2022. The Pardons Board later reduced his jail term from 12 years to six, and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million, in February last year.

Subscribe to our FREE Today marks a milestone that would typically call for family gatherings, birthday cake, and celebration. Instead, Datuk Seri Najib Razak is spending his 72nd birthday behind the walls of Kajang Prison – but his daughter's touching tribute on social media proves that love knows no barriers. As the clock struck another year for the former Prime Minister, his daughter Yana Najib took to Facebook with a message that cut straight to the heart. She opened with a quote from former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, that seemed to capture everything: 'A brave man is not one who is not afraid but one who conquers his fears.' The timing wasn't coincidental. Today, 23 July, 2025, Najib turns 72 – a birthday that marks his third consecutive year celebrating behind bars, and his daughter wasn't about to let it pass unnoticed. Three Years of Separated Birthdays 'Happy birthday Daddy,' Yana wrote in Malay, her words carrying the weight of years of separation. May Allah SWT grant you strength and good health for Daddy. The reality she acknowledges is stark: 'We haven't been able to celebrate with Daddy for 3 years, separated from us.' Yet her message carries no trace of bitterness, only hope wrapped in faith: 'May all matters be made easy and God willing, we can be together again in the near future.' Finding Light in Dark Times Yana's post reads like poetry born from pain: 'A calm heart behind the silence. A ray of hope illuminating the path in adversity. Surely there is wisdom behind every trial. More wise, patient and kind than before.' Umno leaders should understand procedure before 'threatening' PM, says Tuaran PKR chief

KOTA KINABALU: Umno leaders must first understand legal procedures before issuing 'threats' against the Prime Minister over the royal addendum involving Datuk Seri Najib Razak, says Tuaran PKR chief Razeef Rakimin. He was referring to remarks made by Wangsa Maju Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah, which he said showed a disregard for constitutional processes and only served to stir public confusion. 'It is foolish to issue threats without understanding the law or procedure — this only shows how little some Umno leaders actually grasp about the Constitution,' he said in a statement Friday (July 18). 'In Najib Razak's pardon situation, the Pardons Board had already agreed to reduce his sentence to six years' jail and a RM50mil fine, down from the original 12 years and RM210mil fine,' he added. On Thursday (July 17), it was reported that Shafei, speaking before 160 Umno division leaders, urged Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to meet with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to push for the implementation of a royal addendum allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. He also warned that further action may be taken if the government fails to act on the matter. Razeef said the so-called addendum was not valid under the Federal Constitution as it was never presented to or approved by the Pardons Board. 'Umno, which I believe has many legal practitioners, should understand that under Article 42(4) of the Federal Constitution, the power of pardon is subject to the advice of the Pardons Board. 'And based on the 1994 amendment to Article 40(1A), the Yang di-Pertuan Agong must act in accordance with that advice,' he said. Razeef said Najib's family or Umno should instead submit a fresh application in order for the matter to be properly considered by the Pardons Board. 'Using an addendum that did not go through the proper legal channel only exposes the ignorance of Umno's leadership,' he added. 'At the very least, they should respect the law and judiciary by allowing court proceedings on the matter to conclude first.' Razeef also said Umno should be grateful that Anwar — despite being imprisoned during Najib's premiership — did not act out of vengeance. 'Instead, Anwar supported a reduction in Najib's sentence in recognition of his service as prime minister,' he said.

Malaysia confirms existence of document central to ex-PM Najib's house arrest bid, reports say

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) on Wednesday (Jul 9) confirmed for the first time the existence of a royal order that jailed ex-premier Najib Razak says would allow him to serve his prison sentence for corruption at home, local media reported. Najib, who was prime minister between 2009 and 2018, was found guilty in 2020 of graft and money laundering linked to a multibillion-dollar scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). In 2022, he was ordered to spend 12 years in prison for the crime, a sentence halved last year by a pardons board chaired by then-King Al-Sultan Abdullah. Najib, who has consistently denied wrongdoing, contends that the pardons board decision was accompanied by an "addendum order" from the former monarch granting him house arrest, a document that he says authorities ignored. Malaysia's Court of Appeal in January allowed Najib's bid to apply for a judicial review that would compel the government to confirm the existence of the addendum order, and to execute it if it exists. The former king's palace has said the document does exist, but Malaysian authorities including its law and home ministries have previously said they had no record or any knowledge of it. However, a lawyer acting on behalf of the attorney-general said he did not dispute the existence of the addendum document, when questioned on the matter by a federal court judge on Wednesday, the New Straits Times daily reported. Senior Federal Counsel Shamsul Bolhassan was reported as saying that the AGC was instead challenging the procedure through which the order was being submitted as evidence in Najib's judicial review bid. A spokesperson for Najib confirmed the lawyer's remarks, which were made during a hearing on the government's appeal against the ex-premier's application. The AGC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
