After Ambernath accident: Kalyan RTO to bar vehicles failing to meet safety norms from ferrying school kids
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) at Kalyan has decided to inspect all vehicles used to carry school children and bar those failing to meet safety and regulatory standards from continuing operations. The decision came in the wake of the July 7 accident in Ambernath involving a school van that left two students injured. 'While the usage of vans to ferry school kids is permitted by law, the van involved in the accident was registered as a private vehicle and not as a school vehicle. We have confiscated the van and suspended its Registration Certificate', said Deputy RTO Ashutosh Barkul. The driver and attendants of the van were booked by Ambernath Police for rash driving, causing hurt, and neglecting the duty of a driver in case of an accident. Barkul further said that a notice has been issued to local schools requesting detailed information about the vehicles used for the transportation of students. Once this information is received, the RTO will ban vehicles that do not meet the safety standards. The RTO will also try to educate parents about how they can ensure the safety of their children. 'Parents can use the Parivahan app to verify that the vehicle used to transport their children has been cleared by the RTO for this purpose. We are planning to use Instagram reels and other social media to educate parents about what kind of vehicle qualifies as a school bus, and what doesn't,' Barkul added. The School Bus Owners Association (SBOA) is currently pursuing a case in the Bombay High Court against the usage of illegal vans to transport school children. The SBOA says that these vans are cramped and unsafe. However, the Kalyan RTO clarified that the matter is sub judice and there is no blanket ban on school vans.

As stunts test limits on Noida roads, fines also hit new highs
Noida: Traffic police have issued challans totaling Rs 1.2 lakh to two car owners after videos circulating on social media showed youngsters performing dangerous stunts with these two vehicles in Greater Noida's Knowledge Park. A 15-second clip on social media shows one youngster sitting on the window of a car and waving a lathi, while the driver's door is open. It cuts to another car, which is seen zigzagging on a road while a passenger sits on the vehicle's window. As the video sparked outrage among online users, Noida police swung into action and tracked down the vehicles, both registered with the Gautam Budh Nagar transport department. They said a challan amounting to Rs 63,500 was issued to the owner of a Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and another worth Rs 57,500 to the owner of Baleno. Together, this is the highest challan to be slapped for stunts in the city so far. The fine was issued under multiple sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, among them dangerous driving, endangering lives, disobedience and obstruction, and seatbelt violation. DCP (traffic) Lakhan Singh Yadav said on Monday cops have alerted Knowledge Park police about taking action against the accused. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Knowledge Park SHO Sarvesh Singh told TOI that an FIR was registered against the two car owners under sections 181 (rash driving), 251 (act endangering life and personal safety of others) of BNS. "We have launched a search to arrest the accused and seize the cars," he said. Asked what will deter drivers from performing stunts, traffic cops said they club together several violations, so the penalty amount for the challan is higher. In the Knowledge Park case, one of the cars was issued a challan of Rs 20,000 for dangerous driving (section 184 of MV Act), apart from Rs 20,000 for racing (section 189), Rs 1,000 for failure to use safety belts (section 194-B), and Rs 2,000 for disobedience of direction given by an authority (section 179), among other violations. In case of a repeat offence, police said, the Parivahan online portal will automatically double the challan issued against the vehicle. Performing stunts isn't uncommon in the city. On June 2, Noida traffic police fined Rs 89,500, the highest penalty levied against the owner of a four-wheeler, after a video showed three men in a Mahindra Scorpio dragging a police barricade in Greater Noida. Cops later seized this vehicle and arrested the three accused.

15-0.5% in 6 months: Technology helps UP slash its licence backlog
Noida: UP has drastically cut its backlog of pending driving licence applications through tighter monitoring and greater use of technology, the state's transport commissioner, BN Singh, said. Official data shows the pendency rate fell to just 0.5% between Jan 1 and June 10, from an earlier 15%. According to data from the transport department, the Ghaziabad RTO region, which includes Noida, Hapur, Ghaziabad, and Bulandshahr, received 24,115 applications in this period, with only 15 cases still pending. The pendency rate is just 0.06%. Data shows a total of 7,889 applications were cleared, with only one application pending. More than 90% of districts have maintained pendency levels below 0.5 percent. Transport commissioner attributed this progress to consistent departmental oversight and impactful awareness campaigns run via social media and other platforms. The commissioner said that the transport department recently launched a 24x7 WhatsApp chatbot service to make transport-related services more accessible. "Citizens now receive step-by-step guidance on applying for learner and permanent licences, checking challans, requesting NOCs, or requesting new vehicles through the chatbot at 8005441222. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo This also significantly increased awareness among people," the commissioner said. The chatbot currently lacks a payment gateway, so users can only retrieve information and make transactions. Siyaram Verma, ARTO (administration), Noida, explained that applicants can apply for a driving licence through the Parivahan portal, where they can submit an application form and pay the required fee. A driving test slot is then assigned, and if the applicant passes the driving test, the licence is issued—typically within 10 to 15 days.

9k challans issued due to glitch in e-detection portal
Ahmedabad: In yet another technical glitch in a state transport department project, this time in the e-detection portal , 9,741 challans were issued to commercial vehicles even though their insurance was valid. This led the transport commissioner's office to issue an advisory on Friday to all Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in the state, asking them to verify the challans and send the corrected data to the head office. On April 1 this year, the state govt implemented an e-detection project, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), at toll plazas, including on Sardar Patel Ring Road, to enforce motor vehicle laws . Under e-detection system rules, "An e-challan on the Parivahan portal is to be issued to transport vehicles passing through these plazas with outdated documents like PUC, insurance, fitness, or permits," said an advisory states, "This is to inform you that an e-detection project has been implemented at toll plazas on national and state highways across the state of Gujarat to upgrade enforcement actions through technology. Operation Sindoor PM Modi meets NSA, chiefs of armed forces amid spike in tensions with Pak India's air defence systems shoot down Pak drones in J&K, Punjab & Rajasthan Several airports in India to be closed till May 15 - check list However, it has come to the attention of this office that between April 15 and April 17, e-challans were issued for vehicles under the e-detection project even when insurance was valid. It appears that during this period, 9,741 vehicles were issued challans solely for insurance reasons." The office of the commissioner of transport directed the RTOs and assistant RTOs to verify the challans on the vehicle portal. "For vehicles where insurance was valid yet a challan was issued under e-detection, the incorrect challans should be marked as 'wrong insurance challan issued' in the remarks column, and the excel sheet should be sent to this office within two days."Officials pointed out that this was the second such glitch. Earlier in 2024, it was revealed that for vehicles purchased between 2021 and 2022, the state transport department 'blacklisted' 10.5 lakh vehicles in Gujarat to 'rectify' its own mistake that led to a shortfall in the collection of temporary vehicle registration fees. In 2021, the ministry of road transport and highways had announced that 50% of the total registration cost of a vehicle will be collected as temporary registration fees, which comes to Rs 300 for cars and Rs 150 for two-wheelers. However, the provision to collect the hiked fees was not incorporated into the state transport department's online system, leading to a collection shortfall of Rs 100 per car and Rs 50 per two-wheeler. The e-detection system, as a pilot project, applies to all toll plazas under the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the roads and buildings department in the state and will be rolled out country-wide based on the outcomes and recommendations.
