Indigenous inmate complained about being bitten by a spider before dying just days away from his release
An Indigenous inmate has died just days before his release after he told prison staff he had been bitten by a spider. Aboriginal man, Wayne Green, 41, was bitten inside Parklea Correctional Centre in Sydney and, two weeks later, died in Westmead Hospital about 9.55pm on Friday. He received medical treatment after alerting staff to symptoms of severe chest pain. Mr Green was first treated by St Vincent hospital staff, the private health provider inside the Sydney prison, and was subsequently transferred to Westmead Hospital when his condition deteriorated. A spokesperson for the private operators of the prison, MTC Broadspectrum confirmed the Indigenous inmate died on Friday. 'The man had been transferred from Parklea Correctional Centre to hospital at about 12.55pm for treatment,' they told Daily Mail Australia. 'MTC extends our sympathies to his family, friends and the wider Aboriginal community.' The prison operators are working with Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police 'who investigate all deaths in custody regardless of the circumstances'. Medical staff were told about the spider bite on Friday after treating the inmate for chest pain, according to The Daily Telegraph. It's understood the spider bite may have happened two weeks prior to Mr Green's death. Investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology reports before a cause of death can be confirmed. Mr Green was due to be released from Parklea on July 11. The MTC spokesperson revealed a 'protest' broke out at the prison on Saturday following the Aboriginal man's death. 'About 9.00am on Saturday, June 28, in response to the death, a group of inmates conducted a peaceful protest in an accommodation unit,' they said. 'After a period of negotiation, the majority of inmates were voluntarily secured in their cells. A small number of inmate representatives then spoke with centre management. 'At about 12.30pm, inmates were released from their cells, and normal routine recommenced. 'There were no injuries to staff or inmates during the incident, and nothing was damaged.' Mr Green's death will be subject to a coronial inquest.

Prisoner dies at correctional centre, sparking protests from fellow inmates who allege the man suffered for days before his death
An inmate at a Sydney correctional centre has died, prompting protests from other prisoners who say he was denied proper medical care in the days before his death. A 41-year-old Aboriginal male inmate at Parklea Correctional Centre, in Sydney' north-west, died on Friday night after being taken to hospital for treatment. A group of inmates conducted protests inside the correctional centre in response to the man's death at 9am the following day. The protesters reportedly barricaded a wing of the prison while outbound calls and visits to Parklea were temporarily suspended. Family members of a man inside the pod told the Saturday Telegraph the inmates protested because they believed the deceased was given a lack of medical attention in the week leading up to his death. The fellow inmate was reportedly friends with the deceased. One family member told the Telegraph that the 41-year-old's cellmates alleged the prison had not done enough to care for him. 'They are serving these sentences and doing their time but it should be done humanely… he had been begging for help,' the family member said. The Saturday Telegraph understands the deceased inmate was seen by medical professionals on a daily basis in the lead-up to his death. Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner but initial inquiries indicated the death of the inmate was 'not suspicious'. 'About 11.20am yesterday (Friday June 27), emergency services were called to a correctional centre in Parklea following reports of an inmate requiring medical assistance,' a NSW Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia. 'A 41-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Blacktown Hospital, and then transferred to Westmead Hospital for further treatment.' Parklea, a medium and maximum security facility, is privately owned by Management and Training Corp (MTC) but is expected to return to public ownership next year. An MTC spokesperson confirmed the inmate's death sparked 'peaceful protests' in an accommodation unit on Saturday which ended within hours. 'After a period of negotiation, the majority of inmates were voluntarily secured in their cells,' the spokesperson said. 'A small number of inmate representatives then spoke with centre management. 'At about 12.30pm, inmates were released from their cells, and normal routine recommenced. 'There were no injuries to staff or inmates during the incident, and nothing was damaged.' The spokesperson said MTC was working with Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police who investigate all deaths in custody 'regardless of the circumstances'. 'As the matter will be subject to a coronial inquest, it would be inappropriate to comment further,' they said.

It's win or bust for Port Glasgow title hopes as Undertakers head for Rossvale
PORT Glasgow Juniors know it's win or bust if they're to take the West of Scotland GreenVersity Division Four title clash to the final day. Rossvale stand in the Undertakers' way on the penultimate weekend of the season and six points separate Tam Jamieson's side in second place and Knightswood at the top of the pile. It's the business end of the season where everything is on the line - and with the league leaders having played a game more than the Port, they could seal their crown without kicking a ball, meaning the margin for error is next to none. The Parklea outfit head to East Dunbartonshire looking to regain their shooting boots, despite being the league's top scorers by a considerable distance. Their 0-0 draw at Newmains last time out handed the advantage firmly to Knightswood, who moved to within a point of the title by winning 4-2 away to Eglinton. Tomorrow's trip to the Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex is by no means a formality, with Rossvale earning widespread plaudits for their style of play. Whilst their promotion hopes are over, they will still be looking to end their season on a high with the likes of Kevin Docherty proving to be a thorn in the side of many WoSFL four sides for much of the campaign. These two last faced each other early on in the campaign, with Jamieson's side securing victory in a five-goal at Parklea, and he'll be looking for three points again this time around. Goals from Alex McWaters and Ronnie Wilson cancelled out efforts from Docherty and Brandon Fallon on the night. A win in the 'canal capital of Scotland' would leave them needing a favour from Eglinton on the final day and beating the league leaders whilst Port need to beat St Peter's at Parklea.

Shocking footage shows prisoner repeatedly beaten and stabbed inside jail
Mobile phone footage has captured the moment an inmate at a Sydney jail was set up and bashed and stabbed by fellow detainees. Prisoners repeatedly punched and stabbed the inmate inside the Parklea Correctional Centre in north-west Sydney on April 27. NSW Police and prison staff were investigating the incident after footage of the attack was shared. The vision lasted about one minute and began with a burly internee entering a small cell containing five other prisoners. He was offered a handshake by one of the five while another man closed the door behind him. Immediately after he accepted the handshake, the burly prisoner was punched in the face. Four of the cell occupants then set upon the man, punching and shoving him around the small room while the fifth man filmed. The large inmate's attempts to fight back were overpowered. One of the inmates started stabbing him with a small item as he was bundled around the room. Another inmate appeared to set upon the inmate with a different item before he was warned 'not with that' by the man behind the camera. The men continued to attack the inmate while he screamed out in pain. One of the cell gang smacked him twice over the back with a metallic object, spurring laughter from the cameraman while the inmate writhed on the floor. The video ended as the cameraman called and pulled the men from their rival, telling them: 'He's good like that.' The man was left bloodied and cowering on the cell floor with his hands over his head. MTC, the private company that currently operates Parklea, said two inmates had been placed in segregation following the incident. A spokeswoman said all those involved had been identified. 'On Sunday, April 27 2025 Parklea Correctional Centre staff responded to a group assault of an offender,' the spokeswoman said. 'They have since received intelligence the assault was filmed on an illegal mobile phone and have identified the inmates of interest. 'The assaulted inmate was provided with medical treatment and there were no injuries to Parklea staff.' Police have yet to lay any charges in relation to the incident.
