U.P launches drive to curb rising heart attack deaths

In a major initiative aimed at reducing deaths from heart attacks, the state government, in collaboration with Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), launched the UP STEMI Care Program on Saturday. The move is designed to address the alarming rise in ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) — a severe and time-critical form of heart attack — by providing early diagnosis and treatment, especially in rural and underserved areas of the district and its nearby areas. (For representation) At the launch event, Professor Aditya Kapoor, the head of Cardiology at SGPGIMS, said, 'This programme is a major leap in reducing preventable cardiac deaths in UP. By combining medical expertise with government support, we are creating a model that the entire country can follow.' The core of the programme is a hub-and-spoke model that ensures timely thrombolysis (clot-busting treatment) at peripheral hospitals, with rapid referral for advanced cardiac interventions like PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) at tertiary care centre such as SGPGIMS. The initiative includes the distribution of tenecteplase, a potent fibrinolytic drug, and the deployment of tele-ECG technology for real-time diagnosis and treatment initiation. Under this strategy, community and district hospitals (spokes) are now equipped to deliver fibrinolysis within the crucial first hour of a heart attack, while specialised hubs like SGPGIMS will handle advanced care within 3–24 hours. This closes a long-standing gap between early intervention and expert treatment. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in India, accounting for over 28% of all deaths, according to a government note. Coronary artery disease (CAD), a major contributor, is now affecting Indians nearly a decade earlier than those in Western countries. In Uttar Pradesh alone, nearly 5 lakh STEMI cases occur annually, and access to timely, specialised care remains limited in non-urban regions. Among those aged 40–69 and above 70, CAD accounts for nearly 25% of all deaths. Even among those under 40, CAD causes 10% of all deaths — an alarming statistic that underscores the urgency of intervention. Regarding the initiative, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, the principal secretary of Health and Medical Education, said, 'This is a blueprint for scalable cardiac care across India.' Prof. R.K. Dhiman of SGPGIMS expressed his full support to the programme, calling it a transformative step in public health and assuring continued institutional backing.

‘Family planning boosts women power, pillar of holistic devpt'

Lucknow: Emphasising that family planning was an effective means to women's empowerment, principal secretary, health and family welfare, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma said that family planning is not just about population control, it must be seen as a pillar of holistic development. "The aim of family planning is not mere population control, but to build an empowered, educated and healthy society. This requires an integrated approach linking education, nutrition, women's empowerment and health. Such coordination is not possible without convergence across departments. The integrated development model adopted in Shravasti is a great example and should be replicated in other high-priority districts," Sharma said on Friday. He was presiding over a workshop titled 'Empowering women through family planning: Advancing intersectoral convergence in UP'. Organised by Mamta Health Institute for Mother and Child, with support from the Gates Foundation, the event reinforced multi-sectoral collaboration to strengthen family planning services and accessibility across the state. The deliberations focused on enhancing the reach, quality and effectiveness of family planning services through stronger multi-sectoral coordination. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Echoing similar thoughts, principal secretary, department of women welfare, Leena Johari said, "It's not 'you' and 'me', but 'we' that can bring true change. ‘STEMI to ensure no heart patient in UP dies due to lack of treatment'

1 2 3 4 5 6 Lucknow: Heart patients in UP will soon be able to receive timely treatment at their nearest district hospital or community health centre, with the 'System of Treating Elevation Myocardial Infarction' (STEMI) care network. The initiative aims to provide advanced cardiac care during the critical 'golden hour' following a heart attack, increasing the chances of survival for patients even in remote areas. To support this, a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop began at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS). The workshop is focused on training healthcare professionals, including doctors, staff nurses, and paramedics, to implement standardised STEMI protocols in their respective districts. These protocols are designed to ensure early diagnosis, prompt administration of medication, and timely patient transfer to higher centres when needed. Inaugurating the workshop, principal secretary of medical health & family welfare and medical education, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, emphasised the govt's vision of expanding emergency cardiac services across the state. He assured that there would be no shortage of Tenecteplase, the clot-dissolving drug used in heart attack cases, and that it would be made available even at the most remote healthcare centres. "Our goal is to ensure that no patient in Uttar Pradesh loses their life due to the non-availability of timely heart attack treatment," he said. The STEMI care network is based on a hub-and-spoke model. RMLIMS, through its cardiology department, will function as the central hub providing specialist oversight, ECG interpretation, and advanced intervention facilities. District hospitals in Ayodhya, Devipatan range, Sultanpur, and other regions will serve as spoke hospitals. These centres will be responsible for early diagnosis and initiation of treatment under the guidance of the hub. Dr Bhuwan Tiwari, head of cardiology at RMLIMS, explained the structure of the STEMI CARE protocol during the workshop. He introduced a step-by-step acronym that guides healthcare providers in managing heart attack patients. "The power of this program lies in empowering frontline health workers to act swiftly and correctly," he said. The acronym STEMI CARE stands for: Symptoms (identify cardiac symptoms), Time (note when symptoms started), ECG (perform and interpret a 12-lead ECG), Medical Management (give aspirin, clopidogrel, and atorvastatin), Initiate Thrombolysis (administer Tenecteplase if needed), Call the Hub (share patient data with the tertiary centre), Ambulance (arrange transfer with oxygen and IV access), Reassess (monitor vitals before transfer), and Ensure Handover (send referral documents with the patient). Senior cardiologist Dr Rishi Sethi from KGMU spoke about the clinical importance of timely STEMI care'. Varanasi CMO Dr Sandeep Chaudhary shared practical experiences from the field.

Improving healthcare in UP govt hosps: Facility heads instructed to take rounds, click picture & upload

Heads of all government hospitals have been directed to take rounds of wards before OPD starts in the morning and in the evening, interact with patients, check the quality of food being served, and check the functioning of services at all counters on the hospital campus. In a letter issued by principal secretary, medical and health, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, to all chief medical superintendents of government hospitals, the doctors have been instructed, 'To click pictures of rounds taken and upload the same on WhatsApp group.' 'For making patients comfortable in hospital and for a better image of the facility, it is significant that staff behaviour is good and services are provided. Speaking with a few patients will help understand their issues and they can be resolved too.' Checking of patient care services is to be done regularly. Get the food supplied to patients tested by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) officials, the doctors have been told. Check if the hospital staff is forcing patients to purchase medicines or any other consumable from outside stores, the letter instructs the hospital incharges. During summer, functioning of air coolers and water coolers should be checked along with electrical fitting and wiring. During the rounds take supervisors of outsourcing agencies along, so that issues concerning them are resolved. 'If the hospital in-charge is not present, the next senior most doctors should take the round,' said Sen Sharma, who is also principal secretary medical education. Members of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti shall be included while on the rounds and their recommendations be forwarded to director-general, medical and health, or director, medical care via additional director, health, the letter instructs.
