Graft claims ahead of election
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Dr. Ritchie (seated middle) with the Tanjung Aru recipients comprised of fishermen and tour operators - Jonathan Nicholas/Daily Express KOTA KINABALU: Dr. Ritchie Jay Cheng of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah has dismissed recent graft allegations against state leaders as baseless and politically motivated ahead of the 17th Sabah state election. The Tanjung Aru division committee member said claims that ministers took bribes for oil exploration licenses made no sense, stressing that such approvals are handled by technical agencies and not ministers. 'These accusations are like bribing a dentist to get a permit to sell eggs,' he said. Dr. Ritchie warned of possible entrapment efforts and noting that without intent to influence decisions, such cases are weak. He urged voters to stay rational and support GRS for continued development. He was speaking during the distribution of life jackets and safety lights to 50 fishermen in Tanjung Aru, a first-time initiative in the area. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah parties must run Sabah: Nabawan PGRS
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: Marutin Ansiung Text Size: Ghani cautioned party members against falling for malicious slander from opposition forces, describing such attacks as attempts to divide GRS component parties' unity. NABAWAN: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Nabawan division has thrown its full support behind party leadership's stance that local parties must remain the dominant force leading Sabah. Division Chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin said regardless of potential partnerships, all parties must agree that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) should maintain its dominant position in governing the State. Speaking at the party's annual meeting at the youth hall Saturday, the Nabawan Assemblyman said the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN17) presents an opportunity for GRS to prove that local party coalitions mandated by Sabahans can effectively govern for continued development and prosperity. 'Progress in any area must be based on systematic planning, organised management and political stability. I urge everyone not to waste the opportunity we have for political stability in our efforts to ensure Sabah's development continues in line with Sabahan aspirations,' Ghani said. He expressed confidence that GRS, as a local party coalition, can deliver political stability while generating multiplier effects for state development and welfare without external interference. Ghani cautioned party members against falling for malicious slander from opposition forces, describing such attacks as attempts to divide GRS component parties' unity. 'We and other component parties must unite to ensure GRS remains strong and favoured by the people in this state,' he said. He urged members to continue highlighting the State Government's ongoing achievements and genuine efforts to attract public support for GRS, particularly among Nabawan communities and Sabahans generally. Reflecting on political changes since 2018 following Barisan Nasional's fall, Ghani expressed confidence that the coalition of local parties can best translate Sabahan aspirations through solid unity and togetherness to restabilise the State's political arena. Regarding PRN17, Ghani noted that everyone awaits the Sabah State Assembly dissolution announcement, urging party members to prepare machinery, close ranks, and stay ready for any challenges to secure another victory. During his nearly five-year tenure as local representative, Ghani said he has tried various approaches to ensure Nabawan's welfare and development keeps pace with changing times and current community needs. 'The struggle is not over, there is still much I need to accomplish with grassroots support so that Nabawan people's development and welfare continue to be protected, not just for us but for future generations,' he said. Ghani highlighted GRS government achievements over three years despite various challenges, including effective governance during the Covid-19 pandemic and movement restrictions starting in 2020. 'This was also my first-year challenge as people's representative, we were tested by the Covid-19 pandemic while our political temperature remained uncertain during government leadership changes. We were also tested by natural disasters, including major floods in this district that had never occurred before,' he said. Despite challenges, he noted many successes and positive changes implemented for Nabawan. The annual party meeting drew 510 representatives and was attended by GRS component party leaders from the area. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Legal process must prevail over politics in Sabah mining licence probe, says Masidi
KOTA KINABALU: The prosecution of two Sabah assemblymen linked to a corruption case involving a mining prospecting licences should not be viewed through a political lens, said state Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun ( pic ). The Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah deputy president stressed that upholding the rule of law and the presumption of innocence must take precedence over any perceived political ramifications. 'We respect the legal process. Charges brought forward by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) do not mean the individuals are guilty. They must be given the opportunity to clear their names in court,' he said. Speaking at the Gagasan Rakyat Annual Conference for the Petagas division on Saturday (June 27), Masidi dismissed speculation that the case could destabilise the state's ruling coalition. 'Whether there are political consequences or not is not important. What is happening now is a manifestation of due legal process, and that must be respected by all,' he said. The two assemblymen, one of whom is a state assistant minister and the other a government-linked company chairman, are expected to be formally charged here on June 30. Both were previously detained and later released on bail by the MACC. They were detained on suspicion of soliciting and receiving bribes over the issuance of a mining licence in the state. The other is a whistleblower previously linked to the circulation of videos related to the case. The alleged offences are believed to have occurred between 2023 and 2024.

No intention to act as ‘big brother' in GRS: PGRS
Published on: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 Text Size: Razali, who is also Gagasan Rakyat's Darau Division Chief, added he would even accept it if the party is not chosen to contest in that constituency, provided the decision is made through consensus for the sake of Sabah's political stability. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has no intention of acting like a 'big brother' within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, said its Secretary-General Datuk Mohamed Razali Mohamed Razi. Instead, he emphasised the party's commitment to an inclusive and respectful approach among component parties. Razali stressed that the strength of GRS lies in mutual respect and cooperation and not dominance. 'We don't put personal interests first. Gagasan Rakyat's culture is not to dominate, but to move together with all GRS components in unity and mutual respect. We've learned from past mistakes,' he said. Razali was speaking to the media after attending the Gagasan Rakyat Darau Division Conference officiated by GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali here on Sunday. Commenting on a proposal by the party's women, youth, and young women's wings nominating him as the GRS candidate for the 17th Sabah state election, Razali welcomed the suggestion but said the will of the people must come first. Advertisement 'I appreciate the grassroots' aspirations, but ultimately, we must go down to the ground and see if the people want us. That's the real measure.' Razali, who is also Gagasan Rakyat's Darau Division Chief, added he would even accept it if the party is not chosen to contest in that constituency, provided the decision is made through consensus for the sake of Sabah's political stability. 'I will accept it with an open heart if the party president decides to field someone else. What matters most to me is that our president remains as the Chief Minister of Sabah,' he said. As GRS Executive Secretary, Razali also echoed Armizan's call for direct federal-state negotiations, free from the influence of federal party headquarters. 'We've experienced a time when every decision had to go through Kuala Lumpur, and Sabah reps had no autonomy. The time has come for us to act independently and maturely in shaping the state's direction.' Responding to criticism of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development blueprint, Razali defended it as a structured and written plan, unlike previous governments that he said relied on political rhetoric. 'SMJ isn't just coffee-shop talk. It's an official state development document. We're not magicians. Problems built up over 30 years can't be solved in just three. It takes time and stability,' he stressed. Razali also criticised Sabah's long-standing culture of political division, calling the failure to unite the root of the state's political weakness. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
