AGC appeals Syed Saddiq's acquittal, seeks Federal Court review on Armada funds case
KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The prosecution has filed its appeal against the Court of Appeal's unanimous decision yesterday to acquit Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman. In a brief statement today, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) confirmed it had filed the appeal at the Federal Court. 'After examining and considering the Court of Appeal's decision, this department has filed a notice of appeal today to appeal against that decision for discharge and acquittal,' it said. The AGC said this appeal process is part of the judicial system which allows for review of decisions from the lower courts. 'This is a normal practice in the country's legal process and does not reflect any prejudice against anyone,' it said. The AGC said the filing of the appeal is aimed at ensuring the Federal Court would be able to look at and make a final decision on legal issues that arose from the Court of Appeal's decision. Previously, the High Court in November 2023 had found Syed Saddiq guilty of four charges (one count of abetting criminal breach of trust, one count of dishonest misappropriation of property, and two counts of money laundering) in relation of money belonging or linked to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's youth wing (Armada). The High Court had sentenced Syed Saddiq to a total of seven years' jail, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine. Yesterday, Syed Saddiq won his appeal at the Court of Appeal, which set aside both his conviction and sentence.

(Video) Syed Saddiq Acquitted Of All Corruption Charges After 5-Year Legal Battle
Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq can finally feel relief after five long years. The politician has been acquitted of all corruption charges and escaped a prison sentence, a multimillion ringgit fine and caning. Earlier today (25th June 2025, Wednesday), a three-judge Court of Appeal panel led by Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim unanimously acquitted Syed of his corruption and money laundering charges after allowing his appeal. With this, the Court of Appeal set aside the former Youth and Sports Minister's conviction, seven-year prison sentence, RM10 million fine and two strokes of the cane. In July 2021, Syed, who was then the wing chief of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Armada), entrusted with control of Armada funds, was charged with abetting Bersatu assistant treasurer Rafiq Hakim Razali in committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM1 million of the organisation's funds. He was also charged with misusing property for personal gain and faced two counts of money laundering. When reading the unanimous decision, Justice Noorin Badaruddin said the lower court erred when it failed to evaluate the evidence and the legal elements required to prove the charges against Syed. She added, 'We reviewed and found the judge failed to consider all the evidence in the case and that there was a serious lapse in the decision-making process. The judge must explain how his logic considered all the evidence in the defence.' Following the verdict, Syed appeared in front of the attending press. Then, along with his family members, he performed a sujud syukur (bowing to show gratitude) prompted by his father. Also making an appearance at the courthouse to show support for the politician was actress Bella Astillah. The actress sat with Syed's family members in court and was seen comforting them after the verdict. It must have been a relief for Syed to be acquitted of his charges. Supporters also expressed gratitude over the verdict through social media. Not Bersatu's practice to pay its bureau chiefs, says Muhyiddin's ex-officer
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today heard that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) did not pay individuals who led its internal bureaus, including its former legal head Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla. Marzuki Mohamad, the former principal private secretary to party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, testified that no payments were made to prominent lawyer Haniff, who headed the legal and constitutional bureau during the party's early years as it was the practice, reported FMT. Marzuki, now a university lecturer, was quoted as saying that,"Two other lawyers also offered their services voluntarily. It was standard practice not to offer remuneration." He was testifying in a 2021 suit filed by Haniff to claim RM12.5 million in legal fees from Bersatu. Apart from Marzuki, Haniff had named Muhyiddin, deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and treasurer Mohamed Salleh Bajuri as co-defendants. Haniff claimed he received no response on the multiple invoices he had issued between January and March 2021 while Bersatu, in their defence, claimed that Haniff's services from 2016 to 2020 were offered pro-bono. Questioned by Haniff's lawyer Nizamuddin Hamid on whether he knew Haniff was never a party member, Marzuki said he had never asked. On Haniff's invoices and reminders, Marzuki said he had not seen them and that he had learned of Haniff's lawsuit via media reports. Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir set Aug 25 to deliver his decision after Bersatu lawyer Chetan Jethwani said the defence had closed its case.

Perikatan rubbishes claim 10 of its MPs switching sides, calls for proof amid defection rumours
KOTA BARU, June 1 – Perikatan Nasional (PN) has challenged those claiming that 10 of its MPs have pledged support for the government to provide evidence. Utusan Malaysia cited its chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan saying such allegations were no longer surprising amid the current political atmosphere. 'Why only 10 MPs, when we have 74 seats in Parliament? So, when we hear stories like this, it's not surprising anymore in today's political landscape. 'Some even say 11 government bloc MPs are planning to cross over — who knows?' he asked. PN currently has 68 seats in the Dewan Rakyat — 43 from PAS and 25 from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. The Malaysian United Democratic Union (Muda) has also joined it in the Opposition bloc. Takiyuddin, who is also PAS secretary-general, reiterated that PN remains confident in the loyalty of its MPs and believes none intend to defect. Reports had earlier surfaced citing unnamed opposition sources alleging that 10 PN MPs had signed a pledge backing the leadership of the Unity Government. The unnamed sources claimed the move was intended to 'safeguard national political stability' and to 'reject efforts to undermine the people's mandate through continued perception warfare.'

Sedition case against Muhyiddin transferred to new judge
KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was allowed to transfer his legal bid to challenge a provision in the Sedition Act to another High Court. Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid made the ruling after lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad, who appeared for the former prime minister, made the application today. The case will now be heard before Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin. Deputy public prosecutors Abdul Malik Ayob and Nadia Mohd Izhar did not object to the application. Earlier, Amer, at the outset of the hearing, said his client was previously facing the sedition case scheduled for trial before Jamil. "We request for the matter to be heard before the same judge, so the case management in this court set for May 20 can be vacated," he said. On Feb 4, the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president's legal team informed the court of their intention to challenge the validity of certain provisions in the Act, claiming that "exceptional difficulties" had arisen from its application. Muhyiddin had pleaded not guilty to a charge of uttering seditious words during the Nenggiri state by-election campaign at the Dewan Semai Bakti Felda Perasu between 10.30pm and 11.50pm on Aug 14, 2024. The seditious statement related to his claim that he was not invited by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as Prime Minister after the 15th General Election (GE15), despite allegedly commanding the support of 115 out of 222 Members of Parliament at the time. The charge was framed under Paragraph 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 and is punishable under Subsection 4(1) of the same Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction. Muhyiddin was not present in court for today's proceedings and was represented by his lawyer.
