Detroit Lions injury updates: Levi Onwuzurike out for season, Josh Paschal till September
It's the first day of training camp and the Detroit Lions are dealing with injuries to their defensive line again. Lions coach Dan Campbell said defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike will miss the season after undergoing ACL surgery this offseason and defensive end Josh Paschal likely will miss the entire preseason after undergoing an unspecified clean-up surgery. "Levi's surgery was — it was significant but it needed to be done," Campbell said. "Out of his control and it needed to be done, so he will miss the season." Campbell said Paschal will return "probably early September. Labor Day maybe we can start working him into practice, that's the plan right now." Onwuzurike was expected to play a major role this fall on the Lions' defensive front, especially early in the season with Alim McNeill still rehabbing from the torn ACL he suffered last season. CARLOS MONARREZ: Dan Campbell's ability to learn is why Lions will get to Super Bowl 60 Onwuzurike made a career-high 10 starts and appeared in 16 games last season after battling back injuries the first three years of his career. He re-signed on a one-year deal in March to stay with the Lions, who drafted him in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Paschal, a Lions second-round pick in 2022, was penciled in as the Lions' No. 3 defensive end behind Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport. He had two sacks in a career-high 14 games last season. The Lions spent all of the 2024 season battling injuries on defense, and those losses helped derail a 15-win regular season with a divisional-round playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. Defensive linemen Hutchinson, Davenport, McNeill, Mekhi Wingo and Kyle Peko finished last season on injured reserve. Hutchinson, coming off a broken leg, and Davenport, returning from a torn triceps, were cleared for training camp, Wingo and McNeill are on the physically unable to perform list and Peko is a free agent. THE ROOKIES: Lions rookie Tate Ratledge drawing comparisons to All-Pro in work at center Campbell said he's not concerned about the Lions' depth at defensive line, despite the early injury woes. The Lions took defensive tackle Tyleik Williams in the first round of April's draft, No. 28 overall and, the rookie appears to be in line for an immediate starting spot. Roy Lopez, Pat O'Connor and Chris Smith add depth at defensive tackle, and rookie sixth-round pick Ahmed Hassanein and Al-Quadin Muhammad, who did not practice Sunday, are among the backup edge rushers. The Lions still are looking for help at edge, where they cut Za'Darius Smith this offseason. Smith remains a free agent, and the Lions have shown interest in another veteran edge rusher, former West Bloomfield standout Matt Judon. "The depth, feel pretty good," Campbell said. "There again, you don't like to lose anybody. I mean, certainly losing Levi that hurts, but it helps that we got Tyleik. So we got a little bit of balance here. And then you feel good about getting Paschal back here before the season. "All in all I think we're pretty good. I like what we got in that room and really there again, man, we got an opportunity for a lot of guys. We know we'll get Mac back at some point during the season. We just got to get the best unit that we can come out of this and then we got to weather any storm until we get reinforcements, cause reinforcements are coming, at least we know that." Campbell said left tackle Taylor Decker also will miss the start of camp as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. Decker is expected back sometime after the Lions' preseason opener July 31 against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Hall of Fame game, Campbell said. Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw left Sunday's practice with trainers and is being evaluated for a chest injury, the team said. Dave Birkett covers the Lions for the Detroit Free Press. Breaking down the Lions PUP/NFI list moves to start training camp
Let's review the PUP/NFI list with possible explanations for the inclusions. Some players were fully expected to be on the list. Others are surprises. However, as we saw last season, being on the list doesn't necessary indicate severity as players can come off the list very quickly. The exception is the reserve-PUP list which requires missing the first 4 regular season games and has a lone member in Levi Onwuzurike. To refresh, PUP (physically unable to perform) means the injury is football-related. NFI is a non-football injury which could mean anything. Last year, Christian Mahogany missed all of camp on NFI due to mono. Just as important as who is on the lists is who is NOT on the lists. Their absence from the lists means they are healthy and ready-to-go. Not on PUP/NFI Now let's review the players on PUP/NFI: Levi Onwuzurike - Reserve PUP Reserve PUP means he will miss at least the first four regular season games. This one is significant as it's definitely at least a multi-month issue - and possibly much longer. The soonest he could play is October 5 vs the Bengals, but don't hold your breath to see him then. Onwuzurike has a history of an L5-S1 spinal fusion in 2022 which is rare to come back from. To his credit, he had a reliable last season missing only one game due to a hamstring. Towards the end of the season, there may have been a right knee/ankle issue. For him to still be at least two months away after an entire offseason suggests he could have had a significant surgery or a major setback. Taylor Decker - PUP Last season, Decker had a rotator cuff, pec strain, and MCL/ankle sprain. None of those injuries appeared overly concerning and he only missed three total games. He was a full participant at OTA last month which is a hopeful sign that there isn't anything serious going on. The prior offseason he had some surprise surgeries including an ankle deltoid ligament repair and a toe sesamoidectomy. The toe is something that may need to be managed the rest of his career. Khalil Dorsey - PUP It's no surprise or setback to see Dorsey on PUP. He has a good chance to be physically ready sometime this camp, but even if he's ready, the team might keep him on PUP into the season for roster management. Miles Frazier - PUP Frazier was seemingly healthy coming out of college so this is a surprise. He was limited at OTA but there were no indications of concern. Alim McNeill - PUP No surprise or concern here as he was fully expected to start on PUP. He'll likely be on PUP into the season. Malcolm Rodriguez - PUP Like McNeill, no surprise here. Rodriguez will also likely be on PUP into the season. Mekhi Wingo - PUP Wingo had a good chance to avoid PUP so his inclusion is a disappointment. A presumed meniscus repair would likely be ready by now. Hopefully, his PUP stint is brief. Josh Paschal - NFI Paschal has some significant, non-football medical history. Last season, he missed two games due to a shoulder mass excision. In 2018, Paschal was diagnosed with melanoma. On the field, he missed one game due to a right knee last season. Stantley Thomas-Oliver - NFI Thomas-Oliver only appeared in one game last season with the Lions - Week 18. He played five special teams snaps that day. Presumably, something happened this offseason.
