Man (20s) charged and eight arrested as gardaí investigate three Arklow assaults
The latest incident took place at about 4.20pm on Abbey Street in the town centre, where there remained a strong Garda presence throughout Thursday night. Several roads were closed and at least one area underwent a technical examination, with a man in his 30s taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin with injuries believed to be non-life threatening. Gardaí have confirmed that five men were arrested in connection with the incident, pursuant to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and that these men were detained at garda stations in Wexford and Wicklow. One of the five men has now been charged and is due to appear before Bray District Court on Friday afternoon. The four other men (20s, 30s, 40s) remain detained. CCTV footage of the incident circulating online shows two men running from Abbey Street down Back Street, before a silver car follows at speed and veers onto the footpath in the direction of the men, with the loud sound of the impact startling on-looking residents. A silver car with a damaged front bumper is then seen in images of a Garda cordon on Back Street that were taken the same evening. Thurday's incident comes after two other similar assaults within the last fortnight. Gardaí report that this morning several premises were searched under warrant in the Wexford/Wicklow division in connection with these incidents and a quantity of suspected crack cocaine was seized by gardaí. The seized drugs will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis. Asked about the spate of violent incidents, long-serving Arklow councillor Pat Fitzgerald said his phone had been ringing off the hook all evening on Thursday, with residents in the vicinity of the incident expressing their disgust and disbelief at the level of violence. 'This hasn't been a good time for Arklow and there have been too many incidents like this,' he said. ADVERTISEMENT 'A lot of people have been on to me about it, and they're afraid. That one yesterday was shocking to be quite honest about it. 'They can't believe that something like that could happen, especially in an area where many elderly residents are living. 'They're shocked that it happened, but not in another way, as this seems to be happening with more regularity in that area. 'It's dreadful, and something needs to be done about this, so that people can live in a safe environment. It's not a good look for Arklow.' On Monday, July 7 a man in his 40s was hospitalised, having sustained serious injuries in an assault that afternoon in Arklow. It is believed this assault included the use of a stabbing weapon. Gardaí responded to the assault incident at approximately 4.20pm on Monday at an unspecified location, where the injured man was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital 'for treatment of serious injuries'. Two men (20s, 40s) have been arrested as part of this investigation and are currently detained at Garda stations in County Wicklow. Asked for additional details, a Garda spokesperson confirmed that a technical examination has since been conducted by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit. In the early hours of Saturday, June 28, another assault believed to include the use of a stabbing weapon took place at a Ferrybank address. This led to a man in his 50s being taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin. Two people were arrested as part of this investigation and one male (30s) appeared before Bray District Court on Monday, June 30. It is not known if any of these assaults are connected. Investigations are ongoing.

Today in Chicago History: Porch collapse in Lincoln Park kills 13, injures more than 50 young people
Here's a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on June 29, according to the Tribune's archives. Is an important event missing from this date? Email us. Weather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago) 1889: Annexation caused Chicago to gain 131 acres and more than 220,000 residents, making it the second-largest city in the United States. With a new total of 1.1 million residents, it ranked just behind New York in population. Immigrants drove population growth in the Chicago area and Cook County last year, latest census figures showThe Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan area is the third-largest and Cook County is the second-largest in the country. 1996: Soldier Field sweltered as a crowd of 69,000 men sang and shouted during the Promise Keepers' first-ever event in Chicago. 2003: During a balcony porch party at an apartment building at 713 W. Wrightwood Ave. in Lincoln Park, a third-floor porch holding partygoers gave way, caving onto the second-floor porch below and barreling down to the ground floor. Thirteen people died and more than 50 were injured at the site just steps away from DePaul University. Although the city at first blamed overcrowding for the incident, it later charged that the porch on the Wrightwood building was bigger than code allowed and constructed improperly and without permits. Building inspectors, however, never cited those violations before the collapse. In the aftermath of the collapse, victims' families and injured survivors filed lawsuits against the property owner, manager, porch contractor and the city, the last of which a state appellate court ruled could not be held liable. The suits were ultimately settled with the property's insurance companies for a total of $16.6 million. The city also fined the property owner $108,000 and the porch contractor $25,000. It clarified and strengthened the building code and launched inspection sweeps. Officials created a 311 service request code for porch complaints and enacted a policy to inspect porches year-round rather than seasonally. 2006: Northwestern University coach Randy Walker died at 52 of a heart attack. He was at home in Wilmette at about 10 p.m. when he felt chest pains. He was rushed to Evanston Hospital but could not be revived. Pat Fitzgerald was named head coach on July 7, 2006. Northwestern hires Bengals scout Christian Sarkisian as its athletic department general manager
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern hired Cincinnati Bengals scout Christian Sarkisian as the athletic department's general manager on Tuesday to oversee the school's salary cap and revenue-sharing issues. Sarkisian, who spent the past seven years as a scout for the Bengals, will help Northwestern navigate a changing landscape. Schools would be allowed to share millions in revenue directly with student-athletes if a $2.8 billion antitrust settlement against the NCAA is approved by a federal judge. Sarkisian's primary focus will be on football. Sarkisian will lead athlete evaluations and contract negotiations, and oversee Northwestern's name, image and likeness clearinghouse. He also will work with coaches on scholarship budgets and analyze future recruiting class needs. 'After seven years learning from the greatest of football minds and leaders, I feel ready to help add to the legacy of Northwestern's athletic programs,' Sarkisian said in a statement. 'From growing up never missing a Saturday at Ryan Field to helping build rosters that won bowl games and went to the Big Ten Championship, I've learned, and have been raised by, the Northwestern standard of excellence, and I look forward to doing my part to elevate our athletic programs.' Sarkisian is from the Chicago area and has a master's degree in sports administration from Northwestern. He was the Wildcats' assistant director of player personnel and recruiting assistant from 2015 to 2017 under former coach Pat Fitzgerald. His grandfather Alex Sarkisian was captain of the 1948 Rose Bowl team and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. During his time with the Bengals, Cincinnati played in a Super Bowl and two AFC championship games. 'Christian brings a wealth of experience from his time in the NFL and his previous work here in Evanston, particularly in areas such as student-athlete evaluation, recruitment and strategic resources,' athletic director Mark Jackson said. 'His perspective and leadership will be instrumental as we navigate a rapidly changing college athletics environment and continue to support our student-athletes at the highest level.' ___ AP college sports:
