BCCI told to start thinking beyond Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami in Tests; ‘Can't pick and choose to manage workload'
An Indian cricketer can't pick and choose just because of workload management, opined former pacer Irfan Pathan. His comments come after India rested Jasprit Bumrah in the second Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy citing workload management, which has raised eyebrows of several former cricketers. Following the first Test in Leeds, the Indian team got a seven-day gap before the second Test at Edgbaston, which is believed to be enough for a fast bowler. Pathan felt Bumrah's on and off from the Indian playing XI is disturbing the stability of the bowling attack, especially. 'If you are selected in the Indian team, you cannot pick and choose (which match to play) to manage your workload,' said Pathan on Sony Sports, who had played 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20Is for India. 'There is no other bowler like him, he is world class. "But here, you are not missing the match for injury but for 'workload management'. Now Akash Deep will take his place, and be expected to do well as soon as he comes — and maybe he does — but any bowler needs time to settle in. That continuity is needed,' explained Pathan, the only cricketer to take a Test hattrick in the first over of a match. The Indian management's decision to not play Bumrah in all the five Tests in England stemmed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia when the pacer had injured his back in the fifth and final Test in Sydney. That injury kept him out for almost three months. On the other hand, Shami, who was out of action for more than a year, returned to international cricket in February and was a part of the Indian team that won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He then played in the Indian Premier League for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Pathan suggested that the BCCI should now look beyond Bumrah and Shami in the longest format of the game. 'This is why I have been saying that Indian cricket has to start thinking about playing without Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami. They have to start planning for playing without them in Test cricket,' he added. Pathan delved deeper into the consequences of not having Bumrah in all the matches and how it is affecting Indian cricket. 'The main fast bowler of the lineup cannot play all five Tests overseas, so firstly, India don't have Bumrah's services throughout the series and secondly, his replacement, a younger player, is only getting a chance to play when he doesn't. So he does not have stability,' he added. 'This is the only overseas five-match series of the new World Test Championship cycle. This was the series in which Bumrah was needed most. If he had a niggle or an injury, I would understand. But just to manage his workload? Then I don't think this is coming to India's advantage,' concluded Pathan.

"Cannot Pick And Choose": Ex-India Star Slams Jasprit Bumrah For Missing 2nd Test vs England
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has slammed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for missing the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Pointing out Bumrah's absence, Pathan said that he could not "pick and choose" on which match to play in a bid to manage his workload. The Indian team decided to rest the right-arm pacer for the game, considering that it is a five-match Test series in England. Ahead of the tour, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar had already mentioned that Bumrah would not play all the five matches. "If you are selected in the Indian team, you cannot pick and choose (which match to play) to manage your workload," Pathan said on Sony Sports. "There is no other bowler like him, he is world-class. But here, you are not missing the match because of injury but for workload management. "Now Akash Deep will take his place and be expected to do well as soon as he comes in - and maybe he does - but any bowler needs time to settle in. That continuity is needed." Right-arm pacer Akash Deep got included in India's playing XI for Edgbaston Test in place of Bumrah. India made two other changes as Washington Sundar and N itish Reddy were roped in for Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur. Pathan further spoke on India's dependency on veteran pacers Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. The latter has not been selected for the ongoing tour of England. "This is why I have been saying that Indian cricket has to start thinking about playing without Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami. They have to start planning for playing without them in Test cricket," said Pathan. "The main fast bowler of the lineup cannot play all five Tests overseas, so firstly, India don't have Bumrah's services throughout the series, and secondly, his replacement, a younger player, is only getting a chance to play when he doesn't. So he does not have stability. "This is the only overseas five-match series of the new World Test Championship cycle. This was the series in which Bumrah was needed most. If he had a niggle or an injury, I would understand. But just to manage his workload? Then I don't think this is coming to India's advantage," Pathan added.

Team India's hat-trick hero sends message to Shubman Gill, follow this and English batters won't stand a chance
The second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England begins today. Ahead of the match, Irfan Pathan has shared some crucial advice for the Indian bowlers. India are set to play the second Test against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy but there are still doubts about the availability of Jasprit Bumrah. As India lags 1-0 behind in the series, the rest of the bowling attack will have to pay up. Although Bumrah picked up 5 wickets off 140 runs in 43.4 overs, other India pacers Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur recorded 9 wickets and gave away 482 runs in 92 overs. Irfan Pathan, the former all-rounder indicated that the bowlers must learn to change their length depending on the batter and advised to move to a defensive line in case of aggressive play by the England players. One of the factors noted by Pathan was that India did not manage to get a maiden over in the first test match in 12-13 overs. According to him it was a mistake to play to England with attack cricket without opposition because then they gained an advantage and India should not provide them with what they want. Pathan recommended bowlers to curve their line and length according to the weaknesses in the batter, which could be a pull shot, straight drives or the ability to make decisions outside the off stump. Among the pacers, Bumrah and Siraj are the only ones with previous experience playing against England, so they did not manage to gain control of the match. Pathan cautioned that England at a current scoring rate of 5.5 to 6 runs an over will drive the game out of reach as happened in the first Test despite they were ahead in the first innings.

Strengthening lower-middle order is crucial: Pathan on India's batting lineup v Eng
CHENNAI: HAVING conceded the Headingley Test to England after two lower-order collapses, India will be looking to bounce back in the second game beginning in Edgbaston on Wednesday. As the Shubman Gill-led side lost the first Test despite posting five centuries and taking a slender first innings lead, one of the reasons discussed for the result was the letting go off the momentum with the lower-order crumbling in both the innings. Since then, both captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir have said that they want to take 20 wickets while maintaining depth in the batting department. Ahead of the second Test, former all-rounder Irfan Pathan felt that India will have to strengthen the lower-order batting. 'We lost seven wickets in 41 runs in the first innings (at Headingley), while in the second innings we lost five wickets for 30. Lightning shouldn't strike twice, but it did in that game for India,' Pathan said in an interaction facilitated by Sony Sports Network on the eve of the match. Pathan, who has rescued India with both bat and ball in Test matches, believes that offie Washington Sundar's inclusion will help their cause. 'If you look at his career, he has got the potential to be a proper, genuine bowling all-rounder like R Ashwin. His free-flow playing style can allow him to face the second new balls while batting down the order,' he explained.
