Cong, AAP, Patidar leaders slam Raj Thackeray for remarks on Sardar Patel

The Congress, AAP and Patidar leaders in Gujarat have criticised Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray over his comments about Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and former Prime Minister Morarji Desai. They have also demanded a ban on Thackeray's entry to Gujarat and an FIR against him. Addressing a rally in Maharashtra's Thane district on Friday, the MNS chief said when migrants from Bihar were "beaten up and driven away" in Gujarat, it did not become an issue, but a minor incident in Maharashtra became a national issue. He also referred to Morarji Desai and Sardar Patel's alleged anti-Marathi stand after independence. Over the past few weeks, MNS workers have been aggressively demanding that those living in Maharashtra learn Marathi. They have also assaulted a few shopkeepers for failing to respond in Marathi. Gujarat Congress' newly appointed president Amit Chavda on Sunday said making a statement against Sardar Saheb was akin to throwing dust in front of the sun. If you do politics on the soil of Gujarat, you will get an answer, he added. Aam Aadmi Party's state president Isudan Gadhvi said Gujaratis will never tolerate Thackeray's remarks. Your politics is not working, so you are insulting not only the Gujarati people but also the leader of the entire country, Sardar Patel, he said. Gadhvi appealed to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and state BJP president CR Paatil to get an FIR registered against Thackeray. Sardar Patel united 565 princely states and created a united India. When Sardar Patel passed away, he had only Rs 261 in his account. Yet, some Maharashtra leaders are trying to further their political agenda by using derogatory language for such a great personality, he said. Patidar leader Manoj Panara submitted a petition to the police in Morbi city, demanding a sedition case against Thackeray and a ban on his entry to Gujarat. We strongly condemn the comments he made about Sardar Saheb and former PM Morarji Desai. In the coming days, we will knock on the doors of courts and offices and take legal action against him, he said. Patidar leader Alpesh Kathiria said Thackeray has no right to insult national icons. Sardar Patel Group president Lalji Patel and Patidar Yuva Sangh led by Manoj Panara have also condemned Thackeray's statements. Panara has demanded that the MNS chief, whose mentality he termed narrow, be banned from entering Gujarat. Lalji Patel alleged Thackeray has always been anti-Gujarati. He will never become a national leader unless he changes his stance against people from other states, Lalji Patel added. Raj Thackeray's remarks about Patel community spark outrage in Gujarat; AAP, Patidars demand apology

AHMEDABAD: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's controversial remarks against Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and former Prime Minister Morarji Desai have sparked a political storm in Gujarat. Leaders from the Patidar community and the Aam Aadmi Party have lashed out, accusing Thackeray of inciting regional hatred and insulting national icons to revive his fading political relevance. Raj Thackeray, in a meeting on July 18, alleged that certain Gujarati businessmen and leaders had once tried to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra. In his speech, he mentioned names including Sardar Patel and Morarji Desai, which did not go down well in Gujarat. Reacting strongly, Patidar leader Alpesh Kathiria slammed Thackeray's statements as an 'insult to Gujarat's dignitaries' and accused him of fostering a divisive 'Marathi mentality.' He said, 'Raj Thackeray is attempting to vilify national heroes just to stir up anti-Gujarati sentiments and breathe life into his politically defunct party.' Kathiria added, Raj has no moral right to denigrate the legacy of Sardar Patel and Morarji Desai. 'This is not just an insult to Gujarat but to India as a whole,' Kathiria said, demanding a public apology. 'Targeting Sardar Saheb and Morarji Desai is an attempt to reignite regional tension. We won't tolerate such political stunts at the cost of national unity.'

Father-son duo booked for hounding 19-year-old woman to suicide

Surat: Singanpor police booked a father-son duo for abetting the suicide of a 19-year-old woman, Nena Vavadiya, who died in Katargam on Sunday night. The accused, Neel Desai, had been stalking and harassing the victim for a year and tried to extort Rs 30,000 from her. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now When the girl's father approached Neel's father, Vishnu, he threatened to kill him. Police have apprehended Vishnu, while Neel remains absconding following the crime. According to the complaint, Vavadiya worked as an assistant at Tana Tuition Classes in Katargam for one year. Neel frequently visited the tuition class to drop off and pick up his niece. He got Vavadiya's phone number for work purposes but began to harass her. He stalked her, abused her over the phone and made indecent demands. He also demanded Rs 30,000 using abusive language. One day, the victim's father, Rajni, received a call during which Neel began abusing him, assuming the victim was listening. When Rajni started speaking to Neel, he ended the call. Rajni then got the phone number of Neel's father, Vishnu, and complained. Instead of correcting his son, Vishnu abused Rajni and threatened to kill him. Vishnu also said that his son would continue to harass Rajni's daughter. As Neel persisted in his harassment, Vavadiya killed herself at her home on Sunday night by hanging herself with a sari. Singanpor police booked both accused under BNS Sections 108, 308(2), 78(2), 352, 351(3), and 54 for suicide abetment, extortion, criminal intimidation, stalking and other offences. While Vishnu has been apprehended, Neel remains on the run. Local Patidar leaders have demanded strict action in this case.
