56 women rescued from trafficking bid at NJP station

Siliguri: Govt Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers on Monday rescued 56 women from the Patna-bound Capital Express at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station and arrested two persons on suspicion of trafficking. The accused, identified as Jitendra Kumar Paswan and Chandrima Kaur, were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody for seven days. Around 9pm on Monday, GRP and RPF personnel noticed a large group of women boarding the train. None of the women had valid train tickets, but all had their coach and berth numbers written on their hands. According to a GRP officer, the women — hailing from Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Dooars region of north Bengal — were told they were going to Bengaluru to get employment at a phone manufacturing company. However, the train they had been put on was headed to Patna. 56 women rescued from trafficking attempt in Bengal's Siliguri, two held

Kolkata: In a major crackdown on human trafficking, 56 young women were rescued from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station at Siliguri in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, on Tuesday, by a joint team of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and General Railway Police (GRP). Two people were arrested in connection with the attempted human trafficking. The arrested persons tried to traffic these women to other states on the pretext of providing them jobs in a mobile company. According to the GRP, the arrested persons have been identified as Jitendra Kumar Paswan, a resident of Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas district, and Chandrika Kar, a resident of Porajhar near Siliguri in Darjeeling district. 'The police have registered a case against both of them under sections related to punishment for human trafficking,' said a GRP official. Confirming the development, the GRP superintendent Kunwar Bhushan Singh said that police are investigating all possible angles and are trying to nab other associates of the two arrested in this racket. The cops suspect that the two arrested persons are part of a major human trafficking racket that operates through the north Bengal corridor. It is learnt that most of the 56 young women, who were rescued, hailed from Jalpaiguri, Banarhat, Cooch Behar, and Kalchini areas of Alipurduar district in north Bengal. Mainly, women living in and around tea garden areas were targeted. Police said the young women were lured with job offers at a company in Bengaluru. 'However, they intended to take these young women to the Hosur district of Tamil Nadu. The families of the young women have been informed, a district police official aware of the development said. On Monday night, the RPF received a tip-off about a possible human trafficking. "Accordingly, surveillance began at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station on Monday night. A special team of 27 people was formed under the leadership of GRP Police officers Atreyi Gangopadhyay and Barsha Pradhan. The women were rescued following a raid on the Patna-bound Capital Express from NJP," said a cop aware of the development.

Patna-Bound IndiGo Flight Aborts Landing, Performs Go-Around Before Safe Touchdown

Last Updated: An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Patna avoided a major accident after an unstable approach forced a go-around at Jay Prakash Narayan Airport. The pilot ensured a safe landing. A Patna-bound IndiGo flight narrowly escaped a major accident after it performed a go-around during its first landing attempt at the city's Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport after the pilot detected an unstable approach. The incident took place on Tuesday around 9 pm when IndiGo flight 6E 2482 travelling from Delhi to Patna narrowly escaped a failed landing attempt. The aircraft with 173 passengers aboard was unable to land in its first attempt due to the short runway and was forced to abort the attempt. As per the reports, the aircraft arrived at Patna airport around 9 pm. However, moments before landing, it took off again, circling three or four times in the air before attempting a second landing. While the landing was successful, the unexpected double landing caused distress among the passengers. The crew members subsequently reassured the passengers that there was no emergency and that the second take-off was due to technical reasons. According to sources, the go-around was a standard safety procedure and was carried out as a precaution. 'It was a normal and safe maneuver. The pilot opted for the go-around to ensure a stable landing approach," a source familiar with the matter said. The eyewitnesses and aviation sources confirmed that the runway, often considered among the more challenging in the country due to its limited length, posed a significant risk during the landing. The pilot's response averted not just a potential crash, but also a collision with the densely populated Polo Road area nearby, which houses several government ministers and senior officials. This incident came just a week after another IndiGo flight, 6E 5009 from Patna to Delhi, returned mid-air following a bird strike on July 9. That aircraft was grounded for maintenance checks, and the flight was cancelled. Passengers were offered a full refund or alternative arrangements, according to the airline. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 16:20 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Delhi's Lajpat Nagar double murder accused arrested by UP Police from Chandauli

Varanasi: A 22-year-old domestic worker, accused of the cold-blooded murder of his employer and her 14-year-old son in South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar, was arrested on Thursday from a train at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction in UP's Chandauli while trying to flee to his native village in Vaishali, Bihar. The accused, Mukesh Kumar , was arrested in a joint operation by Mughalsarai Police, GRP and RPF, following a tip-off from Delhi Police . Mukesh, who worked with the Sewani family for four years as a driver and helper in their Lajpat Nagar garment shop, was caught onboard the Patna-bound Magadh Express. According to Chandauli SP Aditya Langeh, the platform was cordoned off ahead of the train's arrival and Mukesh was taken into custody. Sources said he was reportedly planning to escape to Hajipur and then to Nepal. A Delhi Police team flew to Varanasi and reached Chandauli to take him back for further investigation. Circle officer Krishna Murari Sharma said Mukesh confessed during preliminary questioning, claiming he was regularly "humiliated" by Ruchika. "Even when I was unwell, she forced me to work and kept scolding me. I lost control and killed her," he claimed. According to police, Mukesh said he had asked for a Rs 40,000 loan, which was denied by the woman. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? When police broke open the door, Ruchika's body was found in the bedroom, while Krish's was discovered in the bathroom.
