Odisha man held for duping minister of Rs 25 lakh
DHENKANAL: Police on Tuesday arrested the man accused of duping Food Supplies Minister Krushna Chandra Patra of Rs 25 lakh in a fraudulent land deal four years back. The 62-year-old accused, Niranjan Satpathy of Banasingh, was arrested under section 318 (4) of the BNS. IIC of Dhenkanal Town police station Pravat Sahu said during questioning, the accused admitted to receiving the money from Patra in 2021. On July 26, the minister lodged a complaint with police alleging that the accused offered to sell him a plot of land at an affordable price in Dhenkanal town and took Rs 25 lakh as the first instalment. However, Satpathy did not execute the deal and return the money despite repeated requests by Patra. The accused reportedly gave Patra two cheques of Rs 25 lakh which later bounced. Legal notice was served on Satpathy but it failed to yield any result. Efforts were also made to settle the case amicably in January this year but to no avail. Subsequently, the minister decided to approach the police. The IIC said Satpathy was produced in the court on the day.

Odisha man kills wife, mother-in-law; buries bodies and plants trees over them
BARIPADA: In what seems to be inspired by the plot of Malayalam blockbuster film Drishyam, a 32-year-old man of Mayurbhanj allegedly killed his wife and mother-in-law. He buried their bodies in his lemon orchard before planting banana trees at the site to hide the crime for over two weeks. Accused Debashis Patra, an ICDS worker, was arrested from Bada Nuagaon village under Kuliana police limits on Tuesday evening. The murder had taken place on July 12. Bodies of Patra's wife Sonali Dalai (25) and his mother-in-law Sumata Dalai were exhumed from the garden during afternoon hours. The heinous crime angered the locals so much that they resisted his arrest and wanted to teach Patra a lesson. Reinforcement was sent to escort him to the police station. Investigation revealed the 32-year-old even registered a missing person complaint with Kuliana police station on July 25 to mislead investigation. Sonali was Patra's second wife. They had married three years ago and have a one-year-old son. However, there were disputes between the couple and Sonali was staying at her parent's place in Ambdubi village under Shamakhunta block for some months.

BJD MPs protest in Parliament over rising crimes in Odisha
New Delhi: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MPs staged a protest at the Gandhi statue in Parliament on Tuesday, decrying the alleged deteriorating law and order situation in BJP-ruled Odisha, particularly the surge in crimes against women and children. Carrying placards that read 'Mahilaon ki cheekh aur sarkar ki khamoshi' (the cries of women and the silence of the government) and 'Odisha BJP ka shaasan, apradhiyo ki shaan' (BJP's rule in Odisha, a pride for criminals), the members demanded immediate central intervention and a judicial inquiry into the recent 'horrific' incidents. Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra said, 'Women and children in Odisha today are completely unprotected. The law and order situation is collapsing.' Citing the incident involving a student of FM College in Balasore, who died after self-immolating when her pleas for justice went unheard, Patra said, 'She approached everyone, including the chief minister, but got no justice.' 'And now in Puri, another young girl was doused in petrol by miscreants and is battling for life at AIIMS Delhi,' he told PTI Videos. He accused the BJP-led Odisha government of being a 'complete failure' and calling its stance on the issues 'convenient and full of double standards.' Patra said the BJD demands a judicial inquiry into both incidents and 'strict action against the miscreants.' BJD MP Muzibulla Khan had similar concerns. He said the BJP raised the slogan of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' to come to power, but it is 'failing to protect our daughters'. Subhasish Khuntia, another BJD MP, said crimes against women and students are continuing 'unabated' under the 'double engine government' in Odisha. 'There is no safety for women under the BJP rule,' he said.

Bhubaneswar: A man was arrested for allegedly duping Odisha minister Krushna Chandra Patra of Rs 25 lakh with a promise to provide him a land plot in Dhenkanal district, police said on Tuesday. The arrest was made on the basis of a written complaint filed by the State Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister at Dhenkanal Town Police Station on July 26, an officer said. 'We have arrested Niranjan Satpathy of Banasingh in Dhenkanal district for duping the minister of Rs 25 lakh and forwarded him to a local court,' Dhenkanal Town Police Station inspector-in-charge Pravat Sahu said. According to the police, Patra had given Rs 25 lakh as an advance to the accused in 2021 for purchasing a plot of land in Banasingh area. However, the accused did not provide the land plot to the minister, the officer said, citing the complaint. Satpathy, later, issued two cheques to Patra, but those cheques bounced, he said. 'The accused had also given a written statement to the minister with a promise to return his money. However, he did not honour the promise,' the IIC said. Speaking to mediapersons on Monday, Patra had said he paid the money as an advance to buy a plot four years ago, when he was serving as a director in a company. As the 'man neither provided a land parcel nor returned the money', Patra said he had lodged a complaint with the local police.
