Road closures planned for major highways scheme

A major highways project is due to start in Staffordshire on Monday. The £1.4m scheme in Wetley Rocks, near Leek, is expected to take about three months to complete, and will include reconstruction and resurfacing of the A520. Staffordshire County Council said some sections of footpath would be resurfaced as part of the work, and damaged drainage, kerbs and ironworks would also be fixed. Temporary traffic lights will be in place, and there will also be a combination of temporary lane and full road closures over the coming months. Overnight closures for the resurfacing work were expected to be carried out in two phases, the local authority said, with the first closure scheduled for late July and the final closure in late August. A signed diversion will be in place via the A52 and A523. Access to businesses and residents in the works area will be maintained where possible. Crews would try to minimise disruption, said cabinet support member for highways Patrick Allen. "Signs have already been put up with details of the scheme and we've written to local residents and businesses informing them of the upcoming work," he said. "It's a vital scheme for the area and I'd like to thank people in advance for their patience." Follow BBC Stoke & Staffordshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
