Ravenous return: Fast-chewing Chestnut wins July 4th hot dog contest

NEW YORK, July 5 — Competitive eater Joey Chestnut recaptured his title at the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest yesterday in Brooklyn, downing 70.5 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes in the July 4th holiday classic. The 41-year-old American missed last year's event after signing a deal with Impossible Foods, whose plant-based products include hot dogs, but he was allowed to enter this year and made his Coney Island comeback a triumphant one. Chestnut won by 24 hot dogs over last year's winner, Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago, but the maestro of mastication could not break his own record of 76 hot dogs that he consumed in 2021. It marked the 17th time Chestnut claimed the 'Mustard Belt' symbolic of supremacy in the gastronomic showdown and his ninth triumph in 10 years. 'Oh my gosh, I was nervous,' Chestnut told event telecaster ESPN after his victory. 'First couple of hot dogs, I was fumbling a little bit, but I found a pretty good rhythm.' Chestnut said that despite his blowout triumph, he was hoping to make a better show of challenging his record consumption total. 'My goal was 70 to 77,' he said. 'I really wanted a little bit more. There's next year and I'm just happy I'm here.' On the women's side, American Miki Sudo won by eating 33 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, her 11th victory in the past 12 years, with American Michelle Lesco second on 22.75 dogs and buns. Sudo, who set the women's record of 51 last year, did not compete in 2021 while pregnant, with Lesco winning that year. — AFP

Australian James Webb places third at Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Cranberry juice and minimal chewing. That's how Sydney man James Webb said he was able to eat 45-and-a-half hot dogs in just 10 minutes. The massive feat landed the 36-year-old a podium finish at Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York. He finished behind Patrick Bertoletti, who ate 46-and-a-half hot dogs, and 17-time champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, who managed to finish 70-and-a-half. Speaking to ABC News Breakfast after the competition, Webb described himself as "a little bit tired and hot dogged out". The competition comes after months of interesting training. As Webb described it, he had to "eat more to eat more". "So, grill up a bunch of hot dogs, line them up, and set the timer and off you go," Webb said. "It's been a crazy month of every second day eating hot dogs. "To be honest, I'm kind of glad it's over for another year." As a former gym owner, Webb is familiar with training. "I love lifting weights, I love training. But I also love to eat," he said. "So, trying to balance the two lifestyles — it's a fun challenge." Webb first rose to competitive eating notoriety after finishing a 5 kilogram hamburger with fries, wedges and onion rings in 27 minutes and 37 seconds at the Khartoum Hotel in Cessnock in 2021. He is the only person to do so in under 30 minutes. From there, he has become Australian #1 and world #4 in Major League eating and holds seven records, including 70 glazed donuts in eight minutes, 338 pistachios in eight minutes and 224 Chicken Wings in 10 minutes. "[It's] crazy how a random burger challenge on a random Saturday afternoon had such an impact," Webb said. "It's changed my whole life, my whole family's life. Eating is my life now." He said the competitions have led to some pretty cool things. "We're in New York City as a family on the Fourth of July, which is pretty significant for the Americans. "So to be a part of that in New York City, competitive eating has got me here, you know? So [I'm] super grateful." Alongside Webb on the hot dog podium was world #1 Major League eater Joey Chestnut. He returned to the hot dog contest after missing last year's due to a contract dispute over a brand deal with plant-based meat company Impossible Foods. Chestnut, 41, holds the title for the hot dog competition after eating 76 in 2021. This year marked the 17th win in 20 appearances for the Westfield, Indiana, eater at the internationally televised competition. "I wish I ate a couple more. Sorry guys," Chestnut told the New York crowd. "I'll be back next year." Defending champion in the women's division, Miki Sudo of Tampa, Florida, won her 11th title, downing 33 dogs, besting a dozen competitors. Last year, she ate a record 51 links. She also was apologetic for her performance. "I feel like I let the fans down a little bit. I heard people in the crowd saying, 'Go for 52,'" Sudo told ESPN. "Obviously, I'm always setting my goals high, but the hot dogs weren't cooperating. For some reason, the buns felt larger today." The annual eat-a-thon, held outside the original Nathan's Famous restaurant in Coney Island, Brooklyn, has been running since 1972. Chestnut bested 14 fellow competitors from across the US and the world, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Ontario, England and Brazil. ABC/AP

2025 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest: Results, highlights as Joey Chestnut dominates, Miki Sudo claims 11th title

Everyone's favorite Fourth of July tradition is back, with the 2025 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest going down Friday at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, and both multi-year champions continued their dominance. Joey Chestnut blew away the competition in his return to the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut took down 70.5 hot dogs for the win, 24 more than the next closest competitor. While it was an impressive performance, it wasn't a record. Chestnut came close, but couldn't beat his 2021 record of 76 hot dogs. Advertisement Patrick Bertoletti, who won the event last season, finished second with 46.5 hot dogs and buns consumed. It marked the 17th time Chestnut won the event and the ninth time in the last 10 years he came away with the win. Chestnut returned to the event after a one-year ban over sponsorship issues. Due to his partnership with Impossible Foods, Chestnut was not allowed to take part in the event in 2024, which allowed Bertoletti to pick up a win. Cooler heads prevailed ahead of the contest in 2025, with Chestnut announcing in June that he was able to return. He lived up to that return Friday, picking up yet another impressive victory in the competition. Advertisement On the women's side, Miki Sudo stormed away with the win Friday, though didn't turn in a record-breaking performance. Sudo won the event after consuming 33 hot dogs in 10 minutes. She defeated runner-up Michelle Lesco by over 10 hot dogs. Lesco finished with 22 3/4 hot dogs. With the win, Sudo has now won the event in 11 of the past 12 years. The one year she missed out, Sudo did not take part in the competition due to her pregnancy. Here's how this year's contest went down:

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest results: Joey Chestnut claims 17th win with 70.5 hot dogs after 1-year ban

Joey Chestnut took down 70.5 hot dogs at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2025. (NDZ/STAR MAX/IPx) There's a reason Joey Chestnut is the GOAT of guzzling hot dogs. Chestnut consumed an incredible 70.5 hot dogs and bun Friday to capture his 17th win at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. The win marked his first since Chestnut was banned from the competition in 2024 due to sponsorship issues. Advertisement Chestnut returned to the competition with a vengeance, beating second-place finisher Patrick Bertoletti by 24 hot dogs and buns. Bertoletti took down 46.5 hot dogs and buns to finish as the runner-up behind Chestnut. After years of dominance, Chestnut was banned from the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2024 due to a partnership with Impossible Foods. Nathan's does not allow competitors to promote other brands, which led to Chestnut missing the event. In June, Chestnut announced he reached common ground with Nathan's and would return to the event. During his year away, Chestnut instead decided to hold a hot-dog eating competition against his long-time rival Takeru Kobayashi. The competition — which aired on Netflix — saw Chestnut eat 83 hot dogs, his personal record. That easily beat Kobayashi's 66. Advertisement Chestnut entered Friday hoping to set a new record at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. He set that record, taking down 76 hot dogs, at the event in 2021. Prior to the event, Chestnut said he would need roughly 48 to 50 hot dogs at the halfway point to set a new record. With five minutes off the clock, Chestnut fell just short of that figure, and had consumed 46 hot dogs. As expected, he slowed down as the competition went along, finishing with 70.5 hot dogs and buns consumed. While he failed to set a new record, it was still a dominant victory. With the win, Chestnut has now won all but two Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contests since 2007. He fell to Matt Stonie in 2015 and did not participate in the event in 2024 due to the ban. Every other year in which he's taken part in the competition, he's won it. He plans to do that again next year. After the win, Chestnut vowed to return and compete in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2026.
