Which 10 Players Have The Best Odds to Win 2025 Defensive Player of the Year?

Entering the 2025 NFL season, the race for Defensive Player of the Year appears to be wide open. Following Aaron Donald's retirement in 2024, there aren't any active players who've won Defensive Player of the Year honors on multiple occasions. Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain is the most recent winner, doing so in a relatively close vote, as he only earned 25 of the 50 first-place votes. However, he isn't one of the 10 betting favorites to win the award this year. Here are the 10 players with the best odds to win 2025 DPOY, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Hendrickson's contract situation remains unsettled, painting a cloud of uncertainty over where and when he'll play this season. What is certain? His elite pass-rushing skills. He has recorded 17.5 sacks in each of the past two seasons, leading the league in sacks in 2024. A four-time Pro Bowler, the 30-year-old is consistently playing at a high level. Carter had a breakout campaign in 2024 and was one of the main reasons why the Eagles hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, but could he have an even better season in 2025? A top-10 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Carter had 42 total tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2024. He also had 53 total pressures, the ninth-best mark among all defensive linemen, per Pro Football Focus, so it's reasonable to think that Defensive Player of the Year contention is in Carter's future. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, Bosa has remained one of the best pass rushers in football. He has recorded 19.5 sacks over the past two years, with his play last season being one of the few bright spots for the Niners. If San Francisco gets back into title contention in 2025, Bosa would likely play a large role in making that happen. Crosby began the wave of edge rushers getting paid this offseason, signing a then-record three-year, $106.5 million extension in March. He has since been usurped by a few of his peers, but that doesn't diminish just how good of a player Crosby is. In fact, he's one of the few edge rushers widely considered elite at both rushing the passer and stopping the run. He was ninth in pass-rush win rate (20%) and second in run-stop win rate (37%) among all edge rushers in 2024, to go along with 7.5 sacks in just 12 games. He recorded a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2023. Could Verse become the first player to win Defensive Player of the Year after winning Defensive Rookie of the Year since Luke Kuechly in 2013? Verse ran away with Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, recording 66 total tackles along with 4.5 sacks and 77 pressures. His play helped the Rams win the NFC West for the first time in three years. Anderson winning Defensive Player of the Year in Year 3 would seem to be a part of his natural ascension in the NFL. Anderson recorded 11.0 sacks last season after winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2023, adding 37 total tackles. Watt became the latest player to earn the title of "highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history," claming that title when he agreed to a three-year, $123 million deal on July 17. His play certainly indicates that he's deserving, recording at least 11.0 sacks in six of the past seven seasons. He tied the record for the most sacks in a season in 2021, posting 22.5 in 15 games to win Defensive Player of the Year. He had 11.5 sacks in 2024 but battled injuries down the stretch. Prior to Watt's extension, Garrett had the honor of being the highest-paid non-QB in history. Like Watt, Garrett has also been one of the league's best pass rushers in recent years and has a DPOY award under his belt already. The four-time All-Pro has recorded at least 12.0 sacks in each season since 2020, including a 14-sack season that helped him win DPOY in 2023. He had a 14-sack season again in 2024, recording the most pressures (83) as well. Parsons might steal the highest-paid non-QB title from Watt soon. He has been seeking an extension from the Cowboys this offseason, and while he hasn't gotten one yet, it appears that Parsons will be on the field when Dallas opens training camp. If Parsons is ready to go when the season opens, he'll almost certainly make a strong case to win Defensive Player of the Year. He has recorded at least 12.0 sacks in the first four seasons of his career, including last season, when he only played 11 games. He has also been in the top five in pressures in each of the last three seasons, leading the league once, per PFF. Hutchinson is returning from a gruesome leg injury that ended his 2024 season after five games, so asking him to win Defensive Player of the Year might be a tall ask. However, he looked like he was going to be in contention for the award prior to fracturing his leg last year. He had 7.5 sacks in five games, giving him 28.5 sacks in 39 career games. Defensive player of the year Patrick Surtain's "main goal" for 2025 is a Super Bowl win

Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain was the best defensive player in football last season. The league honored him with the defensive player of the year award, and PFF recently dubbed Surtain 'the most valuable non-QB in football.' So, how does Surtain top what he did last season? He has an idea, he told reporters at his camp Saturday. 'There's always something out there to do better,' Surtain said, via video from Zac Stevens of DNVR Broncos. 'I mean, why not get another one? Why not get more All-Pros further on into my career, but I think the main goal is to win a Super Bowl. At the end of the day, that's what I play the game for is to win, so I think that's the angle for me.' The Broncos upgraded on defense in free agency after ranking seventh in yards and third in points on defense last season. They signed two former 49ers defenders, safety Talanoa Hufanga and inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and drafted cornerback Jahdae Barron with the 20th overall pick. Greenlaw and Hufanga have played in a Super Bowl, so they know what it takes to get there. 'We added some key additions obviously in those guys,' Surtain said. 'They're going to come in and bring that winning atmosphere. They've been at Super Bowls. They know how to win at a high level. So, adding that to our team will only make our team greater.'

Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts , Spotify , YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Playing cornerback is so, so hard. Advertisement I think they have the toughest job in the NFL like covering these, uh, especially nowadays were number one receivers travel all over the place, like you just don't get a lot of guys like Pater Tan who tracks the number one wide receiver, who, you know, maybe doesn't go into the slot all the time, but when he does, he can be just as, you know, uh, much of a force of racing player as he is on the outside. He's a man coverage on 40% of the snaps. Johnson's 21%. Patrick Pierson is his year is 23%. This is lockdown. This is like, this is what it looks like. This is Revis Island. This is what these dudes look like, size. Advertisement He's an unbelievable tackler. Only one missed tackle last year, 45 or 46 tackle attempts, lowest missed tackle rate among any defender in the entire NFL and he's a corner. And just looking back at his combine, it was honestly crazier than I remember. 62208. Uh, 1.57, 10 yard, 441 40, 40 inch vertical, almost 11 ft on the broad jump. I mean, long arms too, right? Yeah, long arms 2, 32.5. So that's like offensive, yeah, it's pedigree and was coached by Nick Saban. And he was the 2nd quarter selected. Figure that one out. Figure that one out. But you had Micah Parsons at #1, so did I. But why did you have Parsons at 1? Advertisement After Micah came back from injury last year, dude, he was feral, like absolutely feral, and every single snap, he was dedicating his entire life force to try and get a win for the Cowboys. And what that looks. is someone who is basically unblockable and has quarterbacks like running for their lives every single snap. I think this year, if you need to pick up back where he left off, I, I think this could potentially be a career year for him, uh, and I just don't think he really has any holes in his game. He had 11 sacks from week 10 to week 18. He had 11 sacks in one half of a season. I, I don't know if anyone knows needs. Advertisement this, but 11 times 2 is 22. So you basically at a 20 sack rate, he had 8 pressures when he was double teamed. Next highest, highest was Next highest was 4. He's a force of nature, so I totally agree with you. Anybody that criticizes him for being like online too much or like doing a podcast, like, well, is he really putting the work in? Like, I mean, shut the hell up. Like, yeah, like watch him play for 2 seconds.

Patrick Surtain eyes Super Bowl as an encore

Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain won NFL defensive player of the year in 2024 and played in the postseason for the first time. He has a higher goal for 2025. 'What can I do for an encore?'' Surtain said, via Mike Klis of 9News. 'Shoot, I think a Super Bowl would be an encore.'' Advertisement The Broncos upgraded on defense in free agency after ranking seventh in yards and third in points on defense last season. They signed two former 49ers defenders, safety Talanoa Hufanga and inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Both players had their 2024 seasons cut short. In 2022, the last time Hufanga played a full season, he made the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro. He will captain the back end of the Denver defense. 'He's definitely going to be an anchor for our defense,'' Surtain said. 'Just with his experience — obviously he's got All Pro, Pro Bowls, him being a ball hawk, looking over the defense — I think that's going to be a huge addition. He's a great player, and I'm looking forward to working with him.' Advertisement Greenlaw is coming back from an Achilles injury. He was injured on a non-contact injury in Super Bowl LVIII to end the 2023 season, and he missed all but two games last season. 'When you look at his tape, he's very tenacious,'' Surtain said. 'He brings that edge with him that you look for in a linebacker. And he's a tremendous leader as well. I know he helped that San Francisco 49ers team to that Super Bowl run [in 2023], and I can't wait to work with him. I know he's going to bring an intensity to the defense that we definitely need. Or added. We already had intensity for sure. I'm looking forward to working with him.' The Broncos played in the toughest division in football, but they still have big goals for 2025.
