Danger for Barcelona as clubs from Middle East target La Masia talents

Not all talent coming through at La Masia can stay at Barcelona. Unfortunately, not every promising player developed in the club's youth system makes it to the first team. However, the years of effort and resources invested by the club's various departments can bear fruit in other ways – through sales, loan deals with purchase options, or retaining a percentage of future transfers. Advertisement Then there are more difficult cases to manage: when a player's contract ends, he refuses a renewal offer, and leaves for free, contributing nothing financially to the club. This has recently happened twice at Barça, with both those players ending up moving to the Middle East and SPORT reports that many other La Masia players have been approached by Saudi and Qatari clubs. Pau Prim to Al-Sadd Pau Prim, sidelined from Barça Atletic for months due to his refusal to renew, has just signed with Al-Sadd in Qatar. Prim, a defensive midfielder shaped by Barcelona's style and at the club for over half his life, received a lucrative offer from the Doha-based side and has signed for the next four seasons. Advertisement The player who started it all was Unai Hernandez, who left in January for Saudi Arabia. Al-Ittihad signed the former Barça Atletic captain and one of the standout players in the reserve team at the time, representing a major loss for the Catalans. (Photo by) Unai signed a contract through 2028 and has already won a league and cup double in Saudi Arabia within a few months, alongside the likes of Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante, and Danilo. He could have waited until July to leave for free, but the agreement between Barça and Al-Ittihad brought nearly €5 million into the club's coffers. Arnau Pradas the latest The latest departure from La Masia to the Middle East involves Arnau Pradas. The 19-year-old winger, at the Barcelona academy since 2013, has just signed for Al-Wahda in the United Arab Emirates after his contract expired on 30 June. Advertisement Barça waited, perhaps too long, to try and extend his contract, and the renewal offer failed to convince the player, who opted to move to Abu Dhabi, where he has signed until 2029. There is no doubt that the Middle East poses a real threat to Barça's academy. After all, multi-year, high-paying contracts and increasingly competitive leagues serve as a strong lure.

Emerging Barcelona midfield talent reaches agreement with Qatari side

Barcelona are set to suffer a quiet but significant loss this summer with Pau Prim, one of the brightest talents from Barça Atletic, set to join Qatari club Al Sadd, according to Mundo Deportivo. The 19-year-old midfielder, long regarded as a potential first-team pivot, has decided to leave the club after rejecting a renewal offer from Barça. Advertisement Unless there is a last-minute twist, which appears virtually impossible, Prim will bid farewell to the Blaugrana after the final matchday of the First Federation season, where Barca Atletic take on Unionistas de Salamanca. Interestingly, he won't even feature in the squad for that match. Since rejecting the financial terms of the renewal proposal, Prim has been sidelined from team selections, though he continued training with the group. Reasons behind his exit His decision to walk away from Barcelona comes down to two primary reasons: finances and opportunity. The contract extension offered by the club, which ran until June 2025, was not attractive enough for Prim or his representatives. Pau Prim is all set to join Al Sadd. With the likes of Marc Bernal, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Marc Casado, and even Eric Garcia capable of operating in midfield, the competition for minutes was simply too fierce. Advertisement It is worth noting that Al Sadd had already shown interest in Prim during the January transfer window. Talks back then did not materialise into a move, but the situation escalated when he was frozen out of matchday squads. From that moment, his exit became inevitable. Prior to his exclusion, Prim had played 16 matches this season, guiding the team to a stable position. Barcelona's loss could be Al Sadd's gain. The Qatari side have secured a technically gifted, intelligent midfielder who was once tipped to take over Sergio Busquets' role in the long run.

Barcelona consider reintegrating teenage contract rebel in reserve team squad

The situation surrounding Barcelona youngster Pau Prim could take an unexpected turn. The 19-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and having been unwilling to accept the renewal proposal from the club, he has been exiled from the Barça Atletic squad for over a month. However, according to Mundo Deportivo, after being excluded from the Barça Atletic squad for the last seven official matches since 11 January 2025, the midfielder could make a return. With the arrival of Sergi Mila as head coach to replace Albert Sanchez, and given the team's pressing needs, the Blaugrana are considering freezing their decision to keep him off the pitch due to his refusal to renew his contract. There is ongoing internal debate, and discussions are taking place. This possibility remains on the table. The reversal of the measure is not yet final. Barcelona are evaluating the situation, and it appears that the new Barça Atletic coach may have the freedom to include him in the squad to help steer the team back on track. However, some voices within the club remain firm in their initial decision. Meanwhile, the player continues to train as usual, participating like any other squad member. Pau Prim had been a regular starter under Albert Sanchez and made 16 appearances, registering two assists before renewal disagreements forced him out of the team. The 19-year-old La Masia gem came close to signing for a Qatari club during the past winter transfer window. Indeed, he had an offer from Al Sadd and negotiations were advanced, but the move ended up collapsing. Now, Prim could be gifted with an opportunity to play for Barça Atletic again and it will be interesting to see whether it has any implication on his future.
