US man wins $2 million after buying two identical lottery tickets by mistake
A man from Massachusetts, US, became a millionaire twice in one night after accidentally buying two identical Powerball tickets for the same draw, CNN has reported. Paul Corcoran from Fitchburg won $1 million from each ticket in the July 9 Powerball draw. He told lottery officials he had been playing the same random set of numbers 'for quite some time'. According to Powerball and the Massachusetts State Lottery, Corcoran had first purchased a multi-draw ticket covering seven upcoming games. But he mistakenly believed that ticket had expired before the July 9 draw. Thinking he had missed his chance, he bought a second multi-draw ticket just minutes later at a different store which also included the July 9 draw. That ticket ended up matching the same five white balls, 5, 9, 25, 28 and 69. The only number he missed on both tickets was the red Powerball, number 5. Matching five white balls without the red Powerball wins a $1 million prize before taxes. 'I've been playing those numbers for quite some time,' Corcoran said when claiming his winnings at the Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters, according to a lottery spokesperson speaking to CNN. The two stores where Corcoran purchased the winning tickets Market Basket in Fitchburg and Country Farms in Leominster will each receive a $10,000 bonus. This is the first time Powerball tickets worth $1 million have been sold in either Fitchburg or Leominster, according to state lottery officials. Corcoran said the win 'feels good,' but added he hasn't yet decided what he will do with the money. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The next draw is on July 21 with an estimated jackpot of $308 million.

Double delight: Same numbers, two shops; Massachusetts man hits $2M Powerball jackpot twice
In a remarkable twist of luck, a Massachusetts man won $2 million after unknowingly purchasing two identical Powerball tickets for the same drawing, from two different stores. Paul Corcoran, from Fitchburg in north-central Massachusetts, originally bought a multi-draw Powerball ticket for seven games in the run-up to the July 9 draw, CNN reported. However, thinking the final draw on that ticket had already taken place, Corcoran picked up another seven-draw ticket just minutes away from the first store, inadvertently including the same July 9 draw twice. That simple mistake turned into a fortune. According to the Massachusetts State Lottery and Powerball, both of Corcoran's tickets matched all five white balls drawn, 5, 9, 25, 28, and 69, earning him $1 million per ticket before taxes. He missed the full $217 million jackpot by just one number, the red Powerball 5. Corcoran told officials he has been playing the same set of random numbers 'for quite some time'. He claimed his double prize at the Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters, though said he has no immediate plans for the winnings. The tickets were purchased at two locations: a Market Basket supermarket in Fitchburg and a Country Farms convenience store in nearby Leominster. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flexible MBA by SRM—Apply Now! This Massachusetts man became a millionaire twice in one night – thanks to a lucky lottery mistake
One lucky Massachusetts man bought two winning lottery tickets at two different stores, earning him a $2 million payday. Paul Corcoran of Fitchburg, a small city in north-central Massachusetts, planned to play in the July 9 Powerball drawing. He had initially purchased a multi-draw ticket covering seven games but mistakenly believed the final drawing on that ticket had passed, according to a news release from Powerball. So, less than 10 minutes away from the first store where he bought a ticket, he picked up a second ticket for seven Powerball drawings — one that also included the July 9 drawing. That simple mistake earned him a second chance at the $217 million jackpot, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery. Both winning Powerball tickets matched all five white balls drawn on July 9 – 5, 9, 25, 28 and 69, earning Corcoran $1 million, pre-tax, per winning ticket, according to Powerball. Corcoran's numbers just missed the red Powerball, lucky number 5, falling one number short of the full jackpot. He said he's been playing those same random numbers 'for quite some time' when he claimed his winnings at the Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters, a state lottery spokesperson told CNN. Both stores where Corcoran bought the tickets – a Market Basket supermarket in Fitchburg and a Country Farms convenience store in Leominster – will receive a payout of $10,000, the lottery spokesperson said. The winning tickets were the first Powerball tickets worth $1 million sold in Fitchburg and Leominster, Massachusetts, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery. Corcoran told lottery officials his double win feels good, but he does not yet have plans for what he will do with his winnings. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The next Powerball drawing is July 21 with an estimated jackpot of $308 million.

Powerball Winner's Mistake Pays Off Big Time
A Massachusetts man accidentally purchased more Powerball tickets than he intended, but that mistake ended up paying huge dividends. According to a press release from Powerball, Paul Corcoran of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, won $2 million in the July 9 Powerball drawing. He did so with a pair of tickets, both of which were worth $1 million after he matched five numbers. Corcoran did not intend to purchase both tickets, though. "According to the Massachusetts Lottery, Corcoran initially bought a ticket for seven Powerball drawings and mistakenly thought the final drawing on that ticket had already occurred, leading him to purchase another multi-draw ticket that also included the July 9 drawing," the press release explained. Corcoran, who was one of many million-dollar winners from the July 9 drawing, said he doesn't have any plans for his winnings, which he promptly claimed on July 11. A total of eight Match 5 winners were sold for the drawing, and another one in Texas was worth $2 million thanks to the winner matching five numbers and having the Power Play (2x). Ahead of the next drawing on Wednesday, the Powerball jackpot is at an estimated $264 million. Your chances of winning the top prize are astronomical at 1 in 292.2 million, while the chances of winning the prize Corcoran won is 1 in 11.68 million. The most recent Powerball jackpot win came on May 31.
