Onuachu suffers ankle ligament injury weeks after joining Trabzonspor
FORMER Saints striker Paul Onuachu has suffered a "severe" ankle injury just weeks after joining Trabzonspor on a permanent transfer. Onuachu, who Saints felt would not be able to play a full Championship season, injured his ankle ligaments in a friendly this week. The timing of his injury will remind supporters of when Mislav Orsic suffered a serious injury soon after leaving Sainst for Trabzonspor. READ: Five things we learned about Saints in tight friendly against Valenciennes In a statement translated to English, Trabzonspor revealed: 'During the friendly match played against Araz Nakhchivan PFK, Paul Onuachu had to leave the game due to an injury. "After examination and MRI scan, it was determined that he has severe edema in the bones of his left ankle due to trauma, and a partial injury to the ankle ligaments. Our medical team has initiated treatment for our player." Onuachu finished as Southampton's top goalscorer in the Premier League last season with four goals, ahead of Joe Aribo, who scored three. Saints received £6million for Onuachu this summer, marking a loss on the £15million they paid to sign him two and a half years ago.

Nicknamed 'Tall Paul' by Saints fans, the 2.01-metre forward never found his stride in the Premier League, scoring just four goals as Southampton dropped out of the top flight. But in Turkey, he looked like his old self — hitting 15 goals in 21 league games while on loan last season and quickly winning over the fans and board alike. Once prolific at Genk, with 73 goals in 103 league games, 31-year-old Onuachu's return to Trabzonspor feels more like a reset than a gamble. The new Super Lig season kicks off on August 8, with champions Galatasaray defending their crown. Trabzonspor, who finished seventh last term, will hope their returning striker picks up right where he left off. ($1 = 0.8490 euros) (Writing by Ossian Shine in London; Editing by Ken Ferris)
