Barca winger Ansu Fati set to join Monaco on loan with option to buy

MONACO, June 28 — Barcelona forward Ansu Fati is expected to join French club Monaco on loan with an option to buy, sources close to the deal said Friday. The 22-year-old Spanish international passed his medical on Friday as Monaco and Barcelona agreed to a season-long loan deal with an 11-million-euro fee (RM54.5 million) to make the move permanent. According to the same source, the contract will not be made official until July 1. Fati burst onto the scene at Barcelona aged 17, but has since failed to live up to initial high expectations. He made 11 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga champions last term, without finding the net. Fati spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Premier League club Brighton, where he scored four goals in 27 outings. With his expected arrival, Fati should become Monaco's third signing of the summer. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is slated to sign for the Ligue 1 side, following on from England international Eric Dier. Pogba was also undergoing a medical with the principality side on Friday. The 32-year-old 2018 World Cup winner is seeking a club after having his contract terminated by Juventus in March while serving an 18-month suspension for doping. The trio should be officially announced to the press on July 3. — AFP

Paul Pogba returns to football, signs a two-year contract with AS Monaco

French World Cup winner Paul Pogba has returned to football, joining Ligue 1 side AS Monaco on a contract until 2027, according to reports from France and the United Kingdom. Pogba, 32, was banned for four years after failing a dug test in August 2023 while he was playing for Juventus in the Serie A. Though the ban was reduced to 18 months on appeal, the Italian side eventually terminated his contract. The Frenchman will now join Monaco on a two-year contract, looking to make a comeback in professional football. Pogba, a youth product of Manchester United, was initially released from the club by Sir Alex Ferguson, but rose to his prime at Juventus as a midfielder. In four seasons, he won eight trophies with the Old Lady of Turin, also reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2015. His exploits attracted the interest of the then-manager of United, Jose Mourinho, who roped him in for a world record fee of 105 million euros. Under the Portuguese, Pogba won the Europa League and the League Cup, playing 154 times for the Red Devils before relations turned sour between him and the club as he returned to Juve. At the international level, Pogba had become France's linchpin in the midfield, helping it win the FIFA World Cup after 20 years, in 2018, and its maiden UEFA Nations League in 2021.
