Fans upset as Tarik Skubal vs. Paul Skenes duel gets shut down

The post Fans upset as Tarik Skubal vs. Paul Skenes duel gets shut down appeared first on ClutchPoints. Rain pummeled the Midwest on Wednesday and cancelled numerous Major League Baseball games in the region. One of them was set to go down in Detroit as Tarik Skubal was going to lead the Detroit Tigers against the Pittsburgh Pirates. A postponed game is always a bummer, but that set up a double header on Thursday which opened the door for a potential Skubal vs. Paul Skenes showdown. The two Cy Young favorites are pitching on the same day, but not in the same game. Advertisement Paul Skenes was slated to start Game 3 of the series for the Pirates, so the original schedule had him missing a duel with Tarik Skubal by one day. When Wednesday's game got postponed, fans started clamoring about the possibility of the two best pitchers in the game going up against each other. It would've been incredible to see, but the teams aren't changing the pitching matchup. Skubal will start Game 1 for the Tigers, and Skenes will start Game 2 for the Pirates. Fans got their hopes up after Wednesday's game got rained out as there was hope for an incredible pitching matchup. A lot of people thought that the teams were going to give the people what they wanted. Unfortunately, that isn't the case, and now fans are upset about what could've been. The game of baseball is always looking for ways to grow the sport, and this would've been a golden opportunity for exposure. Who wouldn't want to watch a Skubal vs. Skenes showdown? 'crazy how big of a miss this is for the sport,' one fan posted. Advertisement We still to get see both players pitch on the same day, but it would be a lot more fun if it was in the same game. 'What an unfun decision,' another fan said. At the end of the day, this is in the best interest of both of these teams. Each team has a big advantage when one of these pitchers is on the mound, and it's hard for either of them to lose those games. Taking the better matchup means a probable victory. 'The fans need to understand it's in neither teams best interest to line their starts up,' another fan said. 'They'd rather take the massive advantage in one game and get that win.' The Tigers are one of the best teams in baseball, and the Pirates are one of the worst. With Skubal on the mound going up against someone other than Skenes, Detroit will be a big favorite. Advertisement 'For people crying, this is good… I want Skub by himself… We need to win each of his starts and going against Skenes would possibly hurt that… get over it,' a fan wrote. Tarik Skubal will take the mound in Game 1 of the double header at 1:10 ET from Comerica Park in Detroit. Game 2 of the double header will get underway at 5:40 PM, and Paul Skenes will be on the mound for the Pirates. Livvy Dunne buys rare Paul Skenes rookie card

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes and his partner, influencer and former gymnast Livvy Dunne, have become a baseball power couple since Skenes' rapid ascent to superstardom dating back to his rookie season last year. Skenes' dominant play and subsequent National League Rookie of the Year win further propelled the frenzy when baseball fans and card collectors went on a mission to find the one-of-a-kind Paul Skenes Rookie Debut Patch Autograph card. That card was discovered by an 11-year-old California native and eventually went to auction, where it would ultimately sell for $1.11 million to, at the time, an anonymous bidder. Just hours after its sale was finalized, DICK'S Sporting Goods announced they were the ones to pony up the more than $1 million. Now, another rare Skenes rookie card has come to light. Except this time, the card didn't end up in the hands of a collector or sporting goods store. Skenes' partner, Dunne, has paid $2,850 for the rare Skenes card. The card in question is a 2024 Bowman's Best anime card depicting the former No. 1 overall pick. Dunne scooped the card while attending Fanatics Fest in New York City. Only five such cards were produced, with the one that Dunne purchased receiving a perfect PSA grade of 10, according to the vendor in the video. Skenes sees card exhibit for first time Skenes on Friday was at DICK'S House of Sport at Ross Park Mall, where he viewed the exhibit housing his one-of-one card for the first time. "Keep it in Pittsburgh, it's cool," Skenes said of the card and the exhibit. Appearing at a trading card event, Skenes also met with some young Pirates fans who were thrilled to see the Pirates' ace. Skenes owns a 4-7 record with a 2.12 ERA and 110 strikeouts so far through the 2025 season.

Pirates Nearing Major Trade Decision on $131 Million All-Star

Pirates Nearing Major Trade Decision on $131 Million All-Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is indeed in the final months of a long career, it sounds like he'll end things where they all began. Advertisement The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Friday that Pittsburgh considers McCutchen and ace Paul Skenes as their only two "untouchable" players. McCutchen, who turns 39 in October, has spent the last three seasons as the Pirates' DH and part-time right fielder. It's unclear if McCutchen would request a trade to a contender and if the Pirates would grant that wish. The five-time All-Star is hitting .259 with eight home runs, 28 RBIs, and a .744 OPS for the last-place Pirates. Rosenthal added that the Pirates could move starting pitcher Mitch Keller, who signed a five-year, $77 million extension after the 2023 season. Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchenRick Osentoski-Imagn Images It's been a long journey for McCutchen, the Pirates' No. 11 pick in 2005 who debuted four years later. McCutchen is easily one of the greatest players in Pirates history; his 43.2 bWAR ranks 12th entering Friday. Advertisement McCutchen has not committed to playing in 2026. However, one would reasonably believe that the Pirates would do what the Miami Heat did with Udonis Haslem and continuously offer him one-year contracts. Unlike Haslem, though, McCutchen regularly suits up. He's played in 71 of Pittsburgh's 82 games, and his 0.7 bWAR is tied for ninth among Pirates players.
