YPS debuts at Pesta Babulang with ‘Rhythm of Unity' sape performance

YPS's debut performance at Pesta Babulang. KUCHING (July 5): Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) made its first appearance at Pesta Babulang last Saturday (June 28), presenting a vibrant sape performance during the festival's cultural night at Batu Danau, Limbang. The YPS Sape Ambassadors performed a showcase titled Rhythm of Unity, which received a warm reception from the local audience. In a statement, YPS said the appearance reflected its mission to preserve Sarawak's diverse cultural heritage and promote unity among its many ethnic communities. The group uses the traditional sound of the sape to foster intergenerational and cross-cultural connections. 'Bringing the Sape Ambassadors to Limbang for the first time was a deliberate and meaningful step in this ongoing journey. 'The performance was not only well-received by the audience but also resonated with community leaders and cultural patrons,' said YPS. The event was supported by YPS member and Patron of Persatuan Bisaya Sarawak, Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang, and members of the association who welcomed YPS's participation at the festival. Persatuan Bisaya Sarawak president Joseph Blandoi expressed appreciation for the effort. 'We have received applause from the people, and they said that the performance was entertaining. 'We thank and appreciate YPS's support. Hoping to see the team again next year', he said in the statement. YPS also held an informal sape jamming session on June 27 at the festival's mini stage, inviting festival-goers to experience the instrument up close. The foundation used the opportunity to share its mission, vision, and ongoing initiatives in cultural preservation, youth engagement, and community development. Pesta Babulang, held annually by the Bisaya community, celebrates the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new cycle. Known for its cultural parades, rituals, and iconic buffalo races, the festival is a key expression of Bisaya identity and heritage. For those who missed the event, the full performance is available on YPS's official Facebook page. Pesta Babulang Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak YPS

MIRI (June 21): The annual Babulang Festival and Buffalo Race 2025 promises new and exciting experiences for both local and international visitors when it returns to Batu Danau from June 27 to 29. In stating this, Batu Danau assemblyman Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang said the 20th edition of the festival – a significant cultural event for the Bisaya community – is expected to draw thousands of visitors from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and neighbouring regions. 'This year, in addition to the traditional buffalo race which remains the main highlight, we are introducing new elements such as raft and small boat races,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit report. He was speaking to reporters after leading a Sarawak Bisaya Association (PBS) delegation to call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Kuching last Friday. The visit was to brief the Premier on the full programme lined up for the three-day festival, and to extend an official invitation to the Premier to officiate the main event scheduled for June 28. Adding on, Paulus said traditional components of the festival, such as the Ratu and Panglima Babulang pageants and cultural drum performances, will also continue to be part of the programme. The Babulang Festival is the largest cultural celebration of the Bisaya community in Sarawak showcasing traditional music, dances, crafts, food, and sporting events, with the buffalo race being the most anticipated spectacle. Accompanying Paulus for the courtesy call were PBS advisor Datu Antonio Kahti Galis, president Joseph Blandoi, and vice-president I Datu Jack Liam. Babulang Festival Batu Danau Paulus Palu Gumbang
