How e-commerce merchants are navigating tariffs: Payoneer CEO
Tariffs are back in focus as businesses brace for global trade disruptions and shifting supply chains. Payoneer (PAYO) CEO John Caplan joins Market Domination to break down how small businesses worldwide are adapting to rising costs and staying committed to US consumers despite uncertainty. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Domination here. Tariffs and trade deals dominating the headlines on Monday with President Trump issuing tariff letters to multiple countries. As global negotiations continue, businesses are navigating rising uncertainty and preparing for potential fallout from disrupted trade flows. For more, we'll bring in now John Kaplan, CEO of Pioneer and Yahoo Finance's Julie Hyman. Welcome to you both. John, I will start with you. Um, you've got a lot of customers all over the world. Maybe start high level, e-commerce growth, what are the trends you are seeing around the world? Where, where are the pockets of strength, where are the weaknesses? It, it's great to be here. So, Pioneer has 2 million active customers in 190 countries and territories. They're all entrepreneurs and small business owners. Some will sell $30 million year in, in volume, some 300, or some three. And what we see is the Chinese entrepreneurs in our portfolio are incredibly resilient, and are, the tariff environment notwithstanding, are seeking distribution in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere, while they preserve their relationships and distribution on Amazon or Walmart or Etsy or other big marketplaces. We recently did research, 8,000 respondents, global SMBs, 34% of international SMBs very concerned about the tariffs, 36% of US SMBs concerned. So, it's interesting, the US business owners more concerned about the tariff environment than the international entrepreneurs. Most US SMBs don't export. International SMBs start exporting from day one. They're global from the day, when they begin. And so, our data suggests that entrepreneurs are, are resilient, concerned, but focused on growth. I agree with an earlier guest who was talking about that this is a grand negotiation and the world trade will continue. And so, we're in the midst of that negotiation, but if you see through the negotiation, entrepreneurs and trade are focused on growth. Well, and as you said, they have to operate even as this negotiation is going on. So, as you say, as they are retaining and maintaining the US relationships while looking elsewhere, are they raising their prices into the US to account for the tariffs? Are they in trying to increase their volumes elsewhere to make up for it? How are they managing around it? It's a balance. So you'll see some, some of the merchants who sell goods into the US, reducing their SKU count, shedding unprofitable SKUs. They're reducing their cost of goods where their products are manufactured, squeezing margin out of the manufacturing. They're looking at price increases where there's elasticity in their, in their value prop, where they in fact can pass on some price increase. Remember, those products that are imported from Asia are high quality, low cost goods, have a lot of margin in them. Right? And so, the entrepreneurs who are running those businesses are looking to continue to sell to the most incredible consumer on the planet, which is the US consumer, while diversifying to Europe and Latin America and the Middle East. That said, your survey that you mentioned, what struck me is not just that about a third or so of the respondents are very concerned, it's that it's a rising percentage. Which is interesting to me given that we seem to be getting closer to deals, maybe, you know, with our, our counterparts, uh, in trade. So how, what do you make of that? I think it's dark, I think it's darkest before the dawn. Right? Like we're in that final moment and, and, you know, our customers are so resilient and confident about cross-border trade and optimistic about the long-term prospects. So, in some ways, this uncertainty is kind of an air pocket in their operations. You know that feeling when you're, when you're on a flight and you go through that air pocket? It's terrifying for a minute and then everything resumes back to normal. I mean, I mean, you say they're resilient. I am curious because there was talk at the beginning, when we had the, the most dire, um, uh, tariff rates, right? That this was gonna put companies out of business, that they were really gonna see a big drop. Have any of your clients gone out of business? So, it's interesting, we did research to ask, most of our customers are international businesses. They're all over the world. And we asked them, are you going to retreat from the US? Stop selling to the US? And it, when the tariffs were at 145%, it was effectively an embargo. Then they didn't have much choice, right? It's hard to, you know, you know, operate a business if you're, if you don't have any, uh, ability to squeeze out profits. I don't think there's any desire for people to walk away from the US consumer. They are very focused on maintaining those relationships.
