From Bo‑Kaap to the Big Time: Haashim Pead's Junior Bok Journey

Haashim Pead in action for the Junior Boks at the U20 Championship in Italy. Image: Via X/@SAJuniorRugby. Haashim Pead's journey from the vibrant streets of Bo‑Kaap to the global stage underlines a story of pride and ambition. ADVERTISEMENT Now a capped Junior Bok, Pead reflects on his roots, the support of his family, and his goal of rising to the Springboks. His words echo with gratitude, purpose, and the fierce desire to make his mark. FAMILY TIES AND COMMUNITY PRIDE Wearing the Junior Bok cap means everything to Pead. 'It's indescribable,' he says. The moment held particular significance for his father. 'When I got capped, my dad didn't clap (at first) – he just watched. We've come a long way.' The pair share a bond forged through rugby; Pead grew up watching his father play on local pitches, while now his dad watches him transform into a national talent. 'We've switched roles. It's special.' Pead is a proud member of Schotsche Kloof Walmers RFC, his local Bo‑Kaap club. He credits the club for instilling pride and resilience. 'When I step onto that field, I'm representing them. I want to show appreciation for what they've done for me.' ADVERTISEMENT PEAD ON LEARNING AND ADAPTING FROM EARLY SETBACKS Reflecting on a tough Rugby Championship campaign earlier this year, Pead admits there were tough lessons. 'We struggled defensively, but we've fixed a lot over the past few weeks. I feel confident – so does the team.' Nonetheless, he highlighted one strength that stood out: technical performance. 'Our tech was strong; we've learned from mistakes. Keep doing what we're doing, and we'll find success.' He also emphasised his growth during international competition. 'We've learned to do things not only for ourselves, but for our teammates,' he says. The environment of shared ambition and selflessness has shaped team dynamics – and Pead's sense of purpose within them. BIG TEST OF CHARACTER AND SKILL LOOMS England now wait on Friday night as the next benchmark for Pead and his Junior Boks. The South Africans opened their U20 Championship campaign in emphatic style, thrashing Australia 73–17 and sending an early warning to the rest of the competition. Pead was at the heart of that performance, scoring two tries and showcasing his dynamism around the park. As one of the pool's standout talents, Pead will be instrumental in slowing England's powerful lines. His match-up with England's power runners promises to test his defensive skills and leadership under pressure. If he performs well, this could propel his standing in the tournament and etch a lasting impression on his national selectors (for future reference). AMBITION THAT DRIVES PEAD FORWARD Pead's goals stretch far beyond this tournament. He dreams of a Currie Cup debut with the Lions this year. 'I'm in the Lions setup now – making that debut would be special.' Ultimately, his biggest aspiration remains clear: 'The goal is to make the Springboks one day.' With each training session, cap ceremony, and competitive appearance, Pead lays the foundation for that dream. He reveals that his move to the Lions has shaped his character. 'Being out on my own in Joburg was tough at first. But the Lions welcomed me. Their hospitality made the transition easy.' The adjustment taught him independence and the importance of a supportive rugby family away from home. Pead's trajectory from Bo‑Kaap to Junior Bok encapsulates perseverance, community pride, and the hunger to excel. With eyes now firmly on England and future trophies, he embodies the next generation of South African talent – grounded in roots, driven by ambition, and capable of leaving an indelible mark on the international stage. Junior Boks destroy Aussies in World Rugby U20 Champs opener

The Junior Boks were absolutely ruthless, running in 10 tries over the first 57 minutes to power them into an incredible 66-5 lead, before the Aussies scored a few consolations. Junior Bok scrumhalf Haashim Pead scored two tries in their thumping World Rugby U20 Championship win over the Australia U20s in Calvisano, Italy on Sunday afternoon. Picture: Richard Huggard/Gallo Images The Junior Springboks produced a scintillating display of running rugby to crush the Australia U20s 73-17 in their World Rugby U20 Championship opener at the Stadio San Michele, in Calvisano, Italy on Sunday afternoon. The South Africans ran rampant from the opening minutes, scoring five tries in the first half and a further six in the second, as the Junior Aussies couldn't handle the incredible counter-attacking rugby produced by the Junior Boks. Scrumhalf Haashim Pead and left wing Siya Ndlozi dotted down for two tries each, while flyhalf Vusi Moyo slotted seven out of nine conversions for a personal haul of 14 points. It took just five minutes for the Junior Boks to get up and running, breaking from just outside their own 22m, with hooker Siphosethu Mnebele streaking away and feeding Pead to go over for the converted score. The Aussies hit back soon after, with fullback Sid Harvey going over in the corner, but the Junior Boks scored their second in the 23rd minute as prop Herman Lubbe crashed over from close range to put them 14-5 up. Halftime lead A superb final 10 minutes of the half saw the Junior Boks score three more times, as Ndlozi showed extreme pace to finish off brilliant assists from Pead and fullback Gilermo Mentoe, while right wing Cheswill Jooste scored in the corner on halftime to give them a 33-5 lead at the break. A blistering start to the second half sealed the win for the Junior Boks as they ran in five tries in the first 17 minutes, with Ndlozi returning the favour and assisting Pead first, before Mentoe picked up a lost Aussie ball and sprinted away to score a runaway try as they moved 47-5 ahead after 46 minutes. Lock JJ Theron then showed terrific strength to power through a score, replacement lock Jacobus Grobbelaar dotted down in the corner and flank Xola Nyali scored a stunner as the Junior Boks powered into a 66-5 lead after 57 minutes. With the game done and dusted the Junior Boks switched off in the closing stages, as Australia hit back with a double to right wing Cooper Waters, but replacement back Jaco Williams sealed the brilliant win with an intercept score after the fulltime hooter. Scorers Junior Springboks: Tries – Haashim Pead (2), Herman Lubbe, Siya Ndlozi (2), Cheswill Jooste, Gilermo Mentoe, JJ Theron, Jacobus Grobbelaar, Jaco Williams; Conversions – Vusi Moyo (7), Ian van der Merwe (2) Australia U20: Tries – Sid Harvey, Cooper Waters (2); Conversion – Harvey

PRINZ Unveils Supreme Award At The 2025 PRINZ Awards – Pead Brought The Haka Home

Press Release – PRINZ Pead took home the coveted Supreme Award at the annual PRINZ Awards for their campaign, Restoring Mana: The Worlds Largest Haka for Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust. 180 PR Professionals gathered last night to celebrate excellence and achievement in Aotearoas … Pead took home the coveted Supreme Award at the annual PRINZ Awards for their campaign, Restoring Mana: The World's Largest Haka for Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust. 180 PR Professionals gathered last night to celebrate excellence and achievement in Aotearoa's public relations and communications sector, which resulted in over 75 award winners. The categories ranged from Best Use of Digital and Social Media to PR In-House Team of the Year to Marketing Communication. This year, five campaigns went head-to-head to take away the final award of the evening, the Supreme Award. Each campaign, submitted by Acumen New Zealand, Pead, Hamilton City Council, Great Scott and Special PR, received gold awards in their respective categories, making them eligible for this award. Ultimately, Pead was unveiled as the Supreme Award Winner for their work with the Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust. Pead's campaign was born when the Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust was faced with funding cuts. After looking into Aotearoa's most marked act of unity, they found that the Guiness World Record for the World's Largest Haka was held by France. They created a nation-wide call to action, reclaim the World's Largest Haka title from the French and raise funds for RMTT. Their efforts resulted in 6467 New Zealanders performing the Haka at Eden Park Stadium and over half a million dollars raised for RMTT. Furthermore, their campaign led Guinness to revise its rules ensuring only Māori can lead future haka records. The judges noted that their campaign 'brought all of New Zealand and the world on an exciting journey to create positive change'. It was described as joyful, insightful, creative and a truly inclusive communications campaign. Chief Judges Nikki Wright APR FPRINZ and Andrew Pirie FPRINZ comment 'This bold, nation-building campaign showcased some of the best qualities of public relations as it harnessed the power of haka to unite New Zealanders and reclaim the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the World's Largest Haka. It aptly combined cultural pride with a charitable purpose.' Other notable gold awards of the evening were awarded to One Plus One Communications for PR Consultancy of the Year (Large), Scope Communications for PR Consultancy of the Year (Small to Medium) and ProCare for PR In-House Team of the Year. The Public Relations Institute of New Zealand were thrilled to have celebrated another year of incredible mahi in Aotearoa at the PRINZ Awards Gala Dinner last night. The calibre of campaigns this year was extremely high and represents just how valuable the public relations and communications industry really is.
