Cardinals' Contreras sustains left hand contusion when hit by pitch from Pirates ace Skenes

PITTSBURGH (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras sustained a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch by Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes while leading off the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to the Pirates. Contreras stayed in the game to run the bases and was thrown out at home plate by Pirates left fielder Tommy Pham to end the inning while trying to score from second base on Pedro Pages' single. Contreras had X-rays on the hand, and they came back negative. He and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said it is doubtful that the three-time All-Star will play in the teams' series finale on Wednesday. Contreas was replaced in the bottom of the fourth by Alec Burleson, who shifted from left field. Garrett Hampson took over in left. Contreras is hitting .248 in 82 games with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. The 33-year-old Contreras sustained a season-ending fractured left middle finger last Aug. 24 when he was hit by a pitch. 'When I get hit in the arm or hand, I get a little worried,' Contreras said. 'I think I'm going to be OK, just a day or two (off).' The Cardinals are off Thursday before opening a three-game series Friday in Chicago against the Cubs. ___ AP MLB:

Cardinals Dealt Major Blow ahead of Pivotal Reds Series

Cardinals Dealt Major Blow ahead of Pivotal Reds Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Catcher Ivan Herrera has been placed on the 10-day injury list by the St. Louis Cardinals due to a hamstring tear. As a result, Thomas Saggese is getting the call up to the major leagues ahead of the Cardinals series against the Cincinnati Reds. Advertisement It's a significant setback for St. Louis, as Herrera had emerged as the team's most dangerous power threat in the middle of the lineup. Through 171 plate appearances, he was hitting .320 with a .392 on-base percentage and .533 slugging, tallying eight home runs, 36 RBI, 22 runs and one stolen base. This marks his second stint on the injured list in 2025, having already missed time earlier in the season due to a knee issue. Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera (48) rounds the bases during the game against the Milwaukee Brewers© Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images Pedro Pages and Yohel Pozo are expected to handle the catcher duties while Herrera is on IL. This could most likely domino effect into Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson seeing more time at designated hitter. The Cardinals recalled Saggese from Triple-A Memphis on Friday. Advertisement During Masyn Winn's absence in April, the 23-year-old spent most of the month with St. Louis and impressed at the plate, batting .341 with a .364 OBP and .512 slugging percentage, including one home run over 14 games. Despite the strong showing, limited opportunities forced him back to Triple-A Memphis, where he's maintained an .836 OPS across 185 plate appearances. With Ivan Herrera hitting the injured list Friday due to a hamstring issue, Saggese may now get a more consistent look in the lineup as the Cardinals aim to keep his bat active. Prior to a sweep against the Chicago White Sox, the Cardinals had won one of their past eight. St. Louis is currently tied in second place with the Milwaukee Brewers behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. With Ivan Herrera out due to a torn hamstring, the Cardinals called up Thomas Saggese from Triple-A. Pedro Pages and Yohel Pozo will handle catching duties, while the move could give Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson more time at DH. Saggese, who hit well during an earlier call-up, may now get more regular at-bats as St. Louis tries to stay in the NL Central race. ST. LOUIS — Pedro Pagés hit a two-run homer, Sonny Gray pitched into the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 Friday night in a game that started after a 1 hour, 17 minute rain delay. Willson Contreras hit his sixth homer of the season in the eighth inning off Chris Stratton, who was re-signed by Los Angeles before the game, and Nolan Arenado had three hits to help St. Louis improve to a National League-best 21-9 since May 4. Gray (7-1) allowed eight hits and struck out five without walking a batter in 6 1/3 innings to earn his second win against the Dodgers in eight career starts against them. JoJo Romero, Phil Maton and Steven Matz combined to pitch 2 2/3 innings in relief to secure the Cardinals' eighth shutout of the season. Pagés lined the first pitch he saw from Justin Wrobleski (1-2) over the left-center field bullpen in the second inning for his fifth home run of the season to put St. Louis ahead 2-0. Brendan Donovan blooped a two-out, two-run single to center field in the fifth inning to push the Cardinals' lead to 4-0. Wrobleski allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in a career-best six innings after being recalled from triple-A Oklahoma City prior to the game. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts each singled to lead off the third inning. However, Gray struck out Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández, and Max Muncy flew out to right field to end the Dodgers' threat. Gray has tossed 14 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the sixth inning of his start on May 25 against Arizona. Gray has not allowed a run in four of his last six starts. Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-4, 2.39 ERA) is scheduled to face Cardinals RHP Erick Fedde (3-5, 3.82) on Saturday. ___ AP MLB:
