GVMC bags first rank in ‘Safai Mitra Surakshit Shehar'

Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) bagged the much-coveted national-level Swachh award under Swachh Survekshan 2024. As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0., GVMC secured the top place in the special category of 'Safai Mitra Surakshit Shehar' for its outstanding commitment to the safety and dignity of sanitation workers. The award was presented by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal to AP Municipal Administration Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar, Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao and GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg at the Swachh Survekshan 2024 awards presentation ceremony held in New Delhi on Thursday. Expressing pride in securing the first position in the 'Safai Mitra Surakshit Shehar' category, Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao termed it as a matter of great honour for the city of Visakhapatnam and GVMC. He attributed credit to the safai workers, citizens, public representatives, corporators, Swachh Visakha ambassadors, residents' welfare associations, NGOs, and corporation officials and staff who contributed to the achievement. He congratulated GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg and called for his continued efforts to make Visakhapatnam the cleanest city in the ensuing 'Swachh Survekshan 2025' as well. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said Visakhapatnam has consistently maintained its image as one of the cleanest cities in the country, and this award is a result of citizen participation, efforts of the municipal workforce, and support from public representatives.

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao stated that a special action plan is getting ready to develop Gajuwaka as an important industrial hub. On Sunday, he, along with Gajuwaka MLA and state TDP president Palla Srinivasa Rao, ward corporators Boddu Narasimha Patrudu, Rajana Ramarao, Lella Koteshwar Rao, and TDP deputy floor leader Gandham Srinivasa Rao, laid foundation stones for several development works under zone VI, covering 65, 71, and 86 wards. Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that continuous efforts are being made for the development of Gajuwaka. He reiterated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the coalition government is consistently implementing various development and welfare programmes that aim at the holistic growth of the state. He informed that works worth approximately Rs 5.55 crore have been initiated under GVMC funds for construction of VRCC drains, retaining walls, and drinking water pipelines at multiple locations such as Priyadarshini Colony, Visakha Nagar Sanjeevayya Giri Colony, and Ashok Nagar. Similarly, in ward 71, drinking water pipelines were being laid at a cost of about Rs 49.6 lakh. In ward 86, foundation stones were laid for CC roads, RCC drains, CC culverts, and VRCC box culverts at various locations at an estimated cost of Rs 1.54 crore. The Gajuwaka MLA said that efforts are being made to ensure that Gajuwaka constituency stands first in the state in terms of development. He mentioned that a special action plan is being executed to systematically develop every ward in Gajuwaka. He added that the Chief Minister is continuously working with the sole objective of state development. The programme was attended by GVMC VI zonal commissioner BRS Seshadri, executive engineer MRS Prasad, assistant engineer Kedar Nath, among others.

Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao mentioned that the coalition government will work towards development of the city. On Friday, along with Pendurthi MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu and ward corporator M Mutyala Naidu, he laid foundation stone for various development projects worth Rs 3.13 crore in 88th ward. Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the NDA government led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will develop State on all fronts in a consistent manner. He said that Visakhapatnam is a very attractive city and there is a need to develop the city to draw more number of tourists. Srinivasa Rao stated that that as part of facilitating infrastructure for the people, CC roads, CC canals, CC culverts, box culverts are being constructed in Bangarupeta, Indira Nagar, Mutyamamba colony, Kothur, Nagaraju Thota, Kunchuvanipalem, Gangavaram and other areas in the ward. The Mayor instructed the GVMC engineering officials to commence works at the earliest and complete them within the stipulated time. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu said that the coalition government is providing welfare schemes and focusing on various development programmes across the state. GVMC 6th zone commissioner BRS Seshadri, executive engineer MRS Prasad, assistantengineer Kedarnath, TDP and Jana Sena party leaders and GVMC staff participated in the programme.

Vizianagaram: Minister for MSME, SERP and NRI Affairs, Kondapalli Srinivas, reaffirmed the government's commitment to provide basic infrastructure in rural areas. On Wednesday, the Minister, along with Visakhapatnam Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao, inaugurated two newly-constructed roads in Gantyada mandal, fulfilling a 30-year-long dream of the residents of Madhupada village. The projects include a road from Krishnapuram Head Water Works to Madhupada Junction, constructed at a cost of ₹1.34 crore and another road from Madhupada Junction to the Vizianagaram Highway, built with an investment of ₹1.29 crore. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Srinivas said that the poor condition of the roads for nearly 30 years had caused considerable inconvenience to locals. He added that with the cooperation of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), the roads were now developed. He urged villagers to make good use of the facility. Visakhapatnam Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao stated that the road construction was initiated after understanding the plight of the Madhupada residents. He noted that as Visakhapatnam receives drinking water from Thatipudi, this road was constructed for Madhupada as a gesture of gratitude. He also promised that the remaining two kilometres of the road would be completed soon. DCCB Chairman Kimidi Nagarjuna said the district was progressing rapidly under the leadership of Minister Srinivas. He emphasised that as per the directives of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Minister Lokesh, party leaders and workers should actively participate in the 'First Step in Good Governance' initiative and make it a grand success.

Visakhapatnam: In a significant development, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation(GVMC) got selected as one of the 50 global finalists in the coveted Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge 2025. The global competition aims at extending support to transformative concepts from across the world. The GVMC's achievement reflects its testament to its commitment towards building a climate resilient city. Among the 50 cities from 33 countries, Visakhapatnam was selected in the competition. The officials from the GVMC will pitch in for ideas at the camp scheduled next month. The city will receive expert support for piloting innovative solutions in community-based climate resilience as it aims to transform emergency response to a real-time, community-driven climate risk model. This sixth edition of the Mayors Challenge attracted over 630 applications from cities across 99 countries. Visakhapatnam is one of the 50 cities selected from 33 countries, representing more than 80 million residents worldwide. The city will receive $50,000 in seed funding and expert support to prototype. Focusing on co-creation and citizen engagement to tackle climate-induced risks such as floods, cyclones, and extreme heat, the GVMC will further develop its Prajamukhi- Urban Living Lab (V-PULL). The proposal emphasises local innovation, encouraging community-led risk mapping, real-time data collection and deployment of early alert systems. GVMC's ideation team will join Bloomberg Philanthropies' Ideas Camp in July to refine the concept. 'The recognition reinforces our commitment to building a climate-resilient and inclusive city. Through the Prajamukhi - Urban Living Lab, we are empowering communities to co-create solutions that save lives and livelihoods. It is not just about technology, it is about trust, collaboration and innovation,' said Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao. Sharing his views, Municipal Commissioner Ketan Garg said, 'The initiative puts people at the centre of urban resilience. By co-creating with communities, we are building a smarter and more responsive governance system. This model will not only serve Visakhapatnam but can inspire other cities in India and beyond.' Bloomberg Philanthropies invests in 700 cities and 150 countries around the world to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people. The organisation focuses on creating lasting change in five key areas such as arts, education, environment, government innovation and public health.
