Reports: Packers sign OT Zach Tom to $88 million extension

July 22 - The Green Bay Packers signed right tackle Zach Tom to a four-year, $88 million extension on Monday, according to several reports. The contract reportedly includes a signing bonus worth $30.2 million, the largest ever for an offensive lineman in the NFL. Tom was drafted in the fourth round by the Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft and has started all 17 games in each of the last two seasons for Green Bay. The 26-year-old Tom finished third in All-Pro voting among right tackles last season, behind Detroit's Penei Sewell and Philadelphia's Lane Johnson. The Packers are scheduled to report for training camp on Tuesday. --Field Level Media

Former All-Pro Publicly Calls Detroit Lions' Penei Sewell Overrated

While they were once viewed as the NFL's laughingstock, no one is poking any fun at the Detroit Lions anymore. Head coach Dan Campbell has drastically turned around the culture in the Lions' locker room, and one of the roster-building aspects he's placed great emphasis on is reinforcing the offensive line. One of those investments came in the form of selecting Penei Sewell seventh overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. We typically see top-10 selections reserved for left tackles, but Lions general manager took no issue with selecting Sewell and plugging him in at right tackle instead. Either way, the move has paid off in a big way, with Sewell coming away with three Pro Bowl nods plus two All-Pro selections in four seasons with the Lions. He was also recently ranked second in an ESPN poll that went out to NFL executives, coaches, and players. Yet, former All-Pro Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz doesn't think as highly of Sewell as some of his NFL peers do. While he could have kept that opinion to himself, Schwartz decided to go on a Twitter rant about the Lions' starting right tackle, specifically criticizing Sewell's performance in pass protection. 'Whoever is running Sewell's PR firm needs a raise. I don't care how good of a run blocker you are, being an average or above average pass blocker means you aren't the best at your side or the 2nd best overall tackle. Everyone is going to think I hate Sewell, I don't, he's still the 2nd best RT for me. He's just not good enough to be getting the accolades and praise he currently is.' Mitchell Schwartz on Penei Sewell Schwartz believes other linemen, such as Philadelphia's Lane Johnson, Tampa Bay's Tristan Wirfs, and San Francisco's Trent Williams, all deserve more credit than Sewell, particularly because he places a great amount of weight on how linemen perform in pass protection. Wirfs did rank No. 1 in ESPN's survey, while Johnson and Williams came in third and fourth place, respectively. For the record, Sewell only allowed one sack last season, but Pro Football Focus still had him with just a 74.1 pass-block grade, which ranked 39th among tackles. PFF's grading system would certainly match Schwartz's critique of Sewell. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Sewell ranked as the second-best run-blocking tackle, which is likely why he receives so much praise as a key cog in the highest-scoring offense in the NFL a season ago. Ranking the 25 best Oregon Ducks since 2000: No. 12 — Penei Sewell

Over the last 25 years, the Oregon Ducks have been one of the single best teams in all of college football, sitting near the top of the sport for the better part of a quarter-century. Since 2000, Oregon has compiled an overall record of 239-83 (.742), with just two losing seasons during that span. They've been to 24 bowl games, won three Rose Bowls, been to a pair of College Football Playoffs, and appeared in two National Championships. They've seen a Heisman Trophy winner in Marcus Mariota and had 99 players selected in the NFL Draft. It's safe to say that when looking at the nation's best in this millennium, Oregon belongs in the conversation. But who are the players who helped get Nike University into that conversation? That's a different question entirely. To celebrate the quarter-century mark, we're going to dive into that question over the next month as we approach the start of the 2025 season. The Ducks have had hundreds of memorable and beloved players over the years, many of whom will live on forever in some way. But who is the best of the best? That answer, of course, is subjective. When reviewing the numbers and conducting our research, we took several factors into account: career statistics, overall impact and success, legacy, fan adoration, and NFL success. Boiling 25 years of Oregon football down to 25 players is no easy task, and not one that we took lightly. Dozens of players were left on the cutting room floor who deserve a spot in the top 25, and at some point, subtracting names off the list started to feel like pulling teeth. But in the end, we were left with 25 players, whom we will honor over the next few weeks. If you want to catch up, let's take a look at how we've gotten to where we're at in the rankings: Today, let's continue with No. 12 — the massive offensive lineman Penei Sewell. Player Overview It could be argued that Penei Sewell is the best offensive lineman ever to put on a Duck uniform. He just played two seasons thanks to the 2020 pandemic, but for the 2018-19 seasons, there wasn't a better offensive tackle in the country. He won award after award and led an offensive line group that protected Justin Herbert to a 12-2 record and a 28-27 win over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. Penei Sewell Career Stats 21 games, allowed just one sack in 1,376 snaps Best Single Season 2019: 14 games Sewell's sophomore season saw the big 6-foot-6, 325-pounder come into his own and become one of the top O-linemen in the game. This is what Oregon envisioned when Sewell was recruited as the highest-rated lineman to commit to the Ducks. He went on to win the Outland Trophy as the best offensive lineman in the nation. Penei Sewell NFL Draft Sewell was the No. 7 overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft and was taken by the Detroit Lions. Penei Sewell NFL Success This was the second time in the last quarter century that the Lions selected a Duck in the first round and, Sewell was an overwhelming success. It turns out he was the first step towards Detroit's successful rebuild over the past few years, which has seen them go from league doormats to Super Bowl contenders. Sewell has been an absolute anchor on the Detroit offensive line, and if everything goes towards their current trajectory, he may have a Super Bowl ring sooner rather than later. Penei Sewell's Lasting Legacy It's hard to believe Sewell wasn't a Duck for very long ... just 21 games, but his legacy might be as big as his 6-foot-6 frame. He proved that elite offensive linemen don't have to go to the SEC in order to become a high NFL draft pick and succeed at the next level. Oregon can be a destination for players like him and still have the same accolades and recognition. There might have been a Josh Conerly, Jr., or a Iapani Laloulu, or even an Isaiah World if it wasn't for the large footprints left behind by Penei Sewell. NFL tackle rankings: Paris Johnson considered but doesn't make top 10

The Arizona Cardinals have a left tackle they believe in with Paris Johnson. Entering his third season in the league and his second as the team's starting left tackle, he is approaching Pro Bowl level, even if that will be difficult to do with some of the other tackles in the conference. But he is beginning to get some recognition. Advertisement ESPN's Jeremy Fowler revealed who the top 10 tackles are in the league based on the votes of coaches, scouts and executives. Johnson did not make the top 10 and did not receive honorable mention, but he was one of the players who also received votes, so at least one coach or evaluator believes he is a top-10 tackle in the league. The top three tackles are no surprise — Tampa Bay's Tristan Wirfs, Detroit's Penei Sewell and Philadelphia's Lane Johnson. San Francisco's Trent Williams also makes the cut as well. Johnson played well in 2024 but did see a decline later in the year and he missed the final three games. But he is healthy and ready to go. We will see if he can elevate his play and garner some more respect around the NFL. Lions dominate the latest Top 25 players under 25 list

The five Lions are the only five representatives from the entire NFC North division. The young core of the Detroit Lions helped lead the team to a 15-2 record and a second straight NFC North title in 2024. And the good news for Lions fans is that the roster is still loaded with great young talent. In the latest list that spotlights just how talented the Lions are, Sam Monson from the Check the Mic podcast on the 33rd Team compiled his ranking of the top 25 players under 25 years old. Detroit sprinkles in five players, the only team on the list with more than three. To take it one step further, the five Lions are the only five representatives from the entire NFC North division. Detroit's quintet includes right tackle Penei Sewell as the No. 2 player, trailing only Baltimore safety Kyle Hamilton. Defensive back Brian Branch is seventh, sandwiched between the two Rams on the list (WR Puka Nacua and DE Jared Verse). Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs and TE Sam LaPorta are back-to-back at 14th and 15th, respectively. Last but not least, safety Kerby Joseph closes out the list at No. 25. Aidan Hutchinson is perhaps the most glaring omission, too. Hutchinson turns 25 in August. Even though he's coming off a broken leg, he was the presumptive Defensive Player of the Year through the first six weeks prior to the injury. For those wondering, Amon-Ra St. Brown turned 25 last October.
