Mexico's O'Ward wins at Iowa in 100th career IndyCar start
O'Ward took his first victory of the season by edging six-time Iowa winner Newgarden after 275 laps over the 0.894-mile (1.43km) Iowa Speedway oval in the first of two weekend races at Newton, Iowa. "This is great. We've been waiting for this one all year," O'Ward said. "It's crazy. My 50th race was also a win here in Iowa (in 2022) and that's the only other win I have here so it's a cool story." O'Ward overtook pole-sitter Newgarden on the last pit stop exchange and held him off after a restart with 10 laps remaining. "Josef is the master at these races. He rules around here so I knew we had to be spot on," O'Ward said. Newgarden led 232 laps but settled for second, followed by Penske Racing teammates Will Power of Australia and New Zealand's Scott McLaughlin, who started 27th and last after a qualifying crash but nearly made the podium. "We lost track position there and it was game over," Newgarden said. On lap 153, Newgarden surpassed 2,000 laps led at Iowa, the first time any driver has led that many laps at any IndyCar track. O'Ward had not won since last year at the Milwaukee oval. "This is awesome and we have another chance tomorrow," O'Ward said. "It would be really cool to double up." Spain's Alex Palou, who won the pole for Sunday's race, is the campaign points leader with six wins including the Indianapolis 500 but saw his lead shrink from 114 to 105 points, 461-356 over O'Ward. Pole-sitter Newgarden grabbed the lead at the start and O'Ward charged into second after the first set of pit stops. They stayed that way until Newgarden's last pit stop with 43 laps remaining. He returned to the track just behind O'Ward and the Mexican refueled and stayed ahead of Newgarden until US racer Nolan Siegel crashed, halting the race for outer wall repairs. That set up a restart with 15 laps remaining, but Britain's Callum brushed the outer wall to force another restart with 10 laps remaining, O'Ward speeding away and staying ahead to the finish.

Diuguid and Law will oversee the Team Penske teams competing in IndyCar as well as Porsche Penske Motorsport, which races in both IMSA and the World Endurance Championship series. 'After two decades working for Roger Penske, I truly know and understand what the Penske name means in the world of motorsports,' Diuguid said. 'The best way I know to show my appreciation to him for his trust is to ensure our success continues well into the future.' Roger Penske fired his top three executives at Team Penske after two of the Penske cars were found to be illegal. Team president Tim Cindric, IndyCar managing director Ron Ruzewski and IndyCar general manager Kyle Moyer were fired in May in the wake of this Indianapolis 500 cheating scandal. Penske is owner of the three-car team, IndyCar, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500. He has won the Indy 500 a record 20 times. Penske shook up his race team leadership after two-time Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden and teammate Will Power were found to have an illegally modified spec part on their cars ahead the final round of qualifications for the 109th running of 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.' Cindric and Ruzewski already had been suspended by IndyCar for the race and both teams fined $100,000. New Team Penske IndyCar President Jonathan Diuguid. STEAM CORNERS, Ohio – Six weeks since a major shake-up at Team Penske with the dismissals of three key executives, Roger Penske's IndyCar team announced the new leadership for the operation on Friday, July 4. Two of the team's longtime associates that have experience across both IndyCar and Sports Car programs will officially transition to their new roles, beginning this weekend. Jonathan Diuguid has been promoted to President of Penske Racing, Inc., and Travis Law has been named Competition Director for Penske Racing, Inc. Diuguid and Law bring a combined 38 years of experience at Team Penske that will serve them well as they look to build on the organization's legacy of motorsports success. In their new roles, Diuguid and Law will oversee the Team Penske teams competing in the NTT IndyCar Series, as well as Porsche Penske Motorsport, which races in both the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship (IMSA) and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Most recently, both Diuguid and Law served in leadership positions for Porsche Penske Motorsport. As the Managing Director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, Diuguid led the global sports car program to consecutive wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona (2024, 2025), a victory in the 2025 12 Hours of Sebring, a championship in IMSA's GTP Class last season and the 2024 WEC Hypercar driver's crown – all achieved in less than three seasons. Since joining Team Penske in 2005, the Raleigh, North Carolina native has gained valuable experience, first working on the team's Porsche RS Spyder program, followed by seven successful seasons as a race engineer for the organization's IndyCar Series teams before taking on his most recent leadership role with Porsche Penske Motorsport. 'The opportunity to lead the Team Penske efforts across the IndyCar Series, IMSA and WEC is a tremendous responsibility, and the feeling of being trusted to lead these teams is a great honor,' Diuguid. After beginning his Team Penske career in 2007 as a sports car tire specialist, Law rose through the ranks to become a championship-winning chief mechanic in the IndyCar Series before enjoying the same success in sports car competition. Team Penske Competition Director Travis Law Law most recently served as Competition Director for Porsche Penske Motorsport before earning a promotion to his new role with the organization. When we get to the racetrack, we know we have the support of someone who has achieved at the highest levels. I am ready to get to work.' The moves come after longtime Team Penske President Tim Cindric, Managing Director Ron Ruzewski and General Manager Kyle Moyer were dismissed after two of the team's three cars had illegally modified rear attenuators before Indianapolis 500 qualifications on May 18. The NASCAR leadership structure for Penske Racing South remains unchanged with Michael Nelson serving as President, Penske Racing South and Travis Geisler continuing his role at Vice President of Competition, Penske Racing South. Nelson and Geisler bring nearly 50 years of team experience in leading the five-time and defending NASCAR Cup Series championship team. The 2025 IndyCar Series season continues with this weekend's race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Sunday, July 7 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FOX). Porsche Penske Motorsport will return to action on Sunday, July 13 with the World Endurance Championship race in São Paulo, while the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship returns to action on Sunday, August 3 at Road America.
